Poker run:
Date....August 9th 2008
Place....Drivers Wharf, Southampton / Solent
Route not set in stone yet, but hope to do something going into Gunwharf Quay if we can (bit worried about all you nobbas upsetting the QHM!!) Also, would like to get boats out to NAB tower if we can.
Will most likely be the usual evening bash at Drivers.
Usual limit on numbers (30 tops)
This will be the only run this year, at least the only one running out of Drivers.
Will post some more details as soon as some firm decisions are made re: route, lunch stop etc.
I would STRONGLY suggest that anyone who seriously wants to play, gets a deposit (50 quid per boat) into Gill @ Drivers, as I reckon this will a popular one due to all the interest in RB08, CTC etc.
Let's make it a cool event, don't procrastonate!

I'm seeing the designer / builder today, so I'll ask him. He really aught to know how big it is.
Anyway, numbers are looking good for the Poker Run. I'm expecting a few will drop out, but there'll be peeps ready to fill the gaps I'm sure, so looks like it'll be a full house which is excellent news. Now we just need mother nature to be kind to us.
Will be talking later today with Gill, so will try to bash out some firmer plans for the day.
for now, a rough outline starts with a kick off at about 11am from Dock Head.
Every time we do one of these runs, it's a nightmare getting everyone to tow the line as far as doing stuff when they are supposed to, so when the agenda is posted, we will be expecting some co-operation from you lot to try get it all running smoothly.
ie:
Turning up ready fuelled.
Turning up in plenty of time for launching etc, so that you can attend the mandatory breifing. If need be, that means travelling to Southampton the day before.
If re-fuelling is required at the lunch stop, you do it before going on to lunch, not announcing it as we leave for the PM start!
Making sure your boat is up to the challenge (preparation wise), broken down boats in the fleet are a pain in the arse.
If indeed we end up lunching at Gunwharf Quay, we will need total co-operation from you and your crews when entering / leaving Portsmouth, the QHM can be very funny about their port and have strict rules regarding navigation there. If we mess up, not only could some of you end up on a fizzer, but we probably won't be allowed in there again. We will obviously be covering this in detail during the breifing if it goes that way....So listen up!

I have a good feeling about this poker run.
the enrty fees are to be the same as last year, ie, £75 for boat & driver, + £25 per additional crew on board.
Grub at the evening bash will be Hog roast as usual, but for the few who don't like that, we'll have a BBQ on the go for anyone to use, so you can bring some stuff of your choice. I think there's only one ot two who don't do the Hog.
A quick question: assuming reasonable weather, how far do the majority want to go? (as in total distance coved during the day by water)
50 miles
60 miles
70 miles
80 miles

what have previous years been?
Usually around the 70 mile mark.
trying to decide if we could do the length of the Solent within our course (ie, encompasing the NAB tower and Alum Bay, plus the usual darting about.
A bit weather dependant I suppose, but a nice idea if we could.
We could do a 5 mile course for 'HIM' if you like.
Wasn't the may 06 one about 70 miles? Seems silly to do less (weather excepting) - you end up spending hardly any time boating.

No, not yet, I actually wanted to ask Joe Donohoo yesterday, as I had to drop some props off to him, but managed to be late arriving (as usual) so he'd gone by the time I got to his workshop, so we only had a few minutes on the phone, and I forgot to ask.

Count me in!
Captain Chaos has virtually demanded my presence on board his boat The Mighty Fist. But I am a little bit worried.
The Captain has told me to bring some suitable clothing - so I obviously got straight on to the Ralph Lauren website and ordered a stripy t-shirt, nudgey sailors cap (his favourite garment), shorts (in small to accentuate my figure (again one of The Captains favourites)), some deck shoes and a fetching beige jumper to rest over my shoulders while we splice the mainbrace and clean the poop deck etc. I informed Captain Chaos about this and told him I would get a crate of Pimms.
But he seemed quite annoyed about this when i spoke to him and he told me he already had an outfit for me - wet suit with the bottom cut out, a large unripe tangerine, 16m of electrical cord, and that he was going to clean out my bilge pump with his man pipe cleaner.
Also he mentioned something about Josef Fritzling me in the downstairs of his boat. Is this a nautical term? Some sort of pirate thing perhaps?
If anyone could set me straight as to what the etiquette for clothing is that would be great.
Thanks,,
The Duke.

IMHO a chart is never a waste of money, that said there are loads of solent downloads on the web cheap GPS is easy. But a Magnetic compass as a back up - in case.
chances are you would need none of it as there should in theory be 30 boats

If Taz feels in a generous mood next week and bolts his EFi's on my P25 for me then he'll be sporting a shinny new pair of engines on the P28.
But it's getting a bit close to the event so I think the XR2's will go back on the 25 and I guess Taz will make a last minute choice of engines.

Ok chaps, I've been doing the course today.
We're having the lunch stop in Portsmouth, mooring at Gunwharf Quay and chomping at 'Tiger Tiger'.
We'll be leaving Drivers Wharf at 11.30am SHARP
We're going to start a little ways down Southampton Water, mustering just off Netley. then out to Calshot, Horse Sand Fort, and over to Langstone Fairway, where we'll run slowly up into Langstone Harbour with the 1st card collection within the harbour at the bottom end of the skiing area near to the 'Ferryboat Inn' on Hayling Island.
Then a slow run out to start near to Langstone Fairway, out around Horse Sand Fort again and into to Portsmouth harbour entrance. Great care will be needed in this area as the Queens Harbour Master is quite particular about craft movement on his 'patch', so we'll probably have a boat pick you all up outside, and lead you across to Gunwharf as this is crossing the commercial shipping channel in the entrance. 2nd card at lunch stop.
After lunch, we'll run slowly out to Gilkicker point where we'll start and head over to Osbourne Bay for card 3. Then off round the Cowes headlands via West Ryde Middle and East Lepe to the Newtown Creek entrance, where as the tide is a rising nepe, there should be plenty of depth to have the card boat inside Newtown Creek, which is gorgeous. that's card 4.
That all adds up to about 55 statute miles, so not too painfull on the old wallet fuel wise.
From there, off to a point just off the entrance to the Beaulieu river for card 5.
Then back to base via West Bramble and Calshot for the evening festivities.
Anyone who still needs to get their deposit into Gill needs to do it NOW!! cheques made payable to G Williams.

For those of us that are not local to the Solent, does this Submarine barrier have a bouy at the end of it, or anything to mark that you are far enough out to pass?
As reading here it seems to have caught out the best!!
gaZ
Jon Fuller
22-07-2008, 12:56 PM
The barrier runs from the shore at Southsea, south, with a dog-leg at the end running SW and one of these at the end, you can't really miss it.
There is a marked passage through it about half way tween shore and fort.
There will be charts of the area at the briefing, so you can get comfortable with it before you head out.

22-07-2008, 01:01 PM

No, there are three, the privately owned one is 'No Mans Land Fort', then there's our one, Horse sand, then there's Spit sand fort just outside Portsmouth harbour entrance, that one is open to the public, hold events etc, you can also hire the apartment on the top of it. We had a poker run evening bash on it back in 2001 which was very cool.

Essentially *you* are responcible for your own safety. You can choose what equipment you think you need.
IMNSHO a lifejacket per crew, a few flares and a handheld VHF would be good. Replace the VHF with a mobile if you need to. A reasonable first aid kit and a long bit of rope would do nicely...

Unpacked file for those without winzip can be collected Click Here (http://www.hedges-uk.com/boat/solentwaypoints/)
also included the master zip for those inclined
7-zip is a good, free, alternative.
Would be great but got no winzip on this machine!

Hi Jon
Could you let us have the lat longs for the course that you've set please. It would be nice to have them entered and that annoying job out of the way beforehand.

Hi there Captain and all,
I know matey.....BUT!
Unfortunately, my Navigator and Mechanic has gone AWOL. :violin: but we won't go there just now...ey!
So I was thinking of catching up with you all for a few bevies at the evening bash......if that's OK!?......
Unless of courrrrrrrse!...... anyone has an spare seat in their boat.....hint! hint!
Of course I'd chip in for the fuel costs etc.
Anyways, it looks like a good turnout too.
And I'd like to see all the boats together, especially Darren's P25.
It might just give me the incentive I need to get on and finish ours.
Soooo have a great day all and I hope the weather holds.
Cheers
Steve

There is a chance that if the weather gives us a stiff S-Easterly we'll ditch the run into Langstone and instead run over to Ryde Pier. We'll also add a pickup down at the Racing platform just outside Lymington after lunch and ditch the Beauleiu pickup..
I've added the lat & long details of this in case we use it. (Ryde Pier & the Lymington Platform).
Image below is the alternative route in case of strong S-Easterly's (which is unlikely)
Card 1 = Ryde Pier
Card 2 = Lunch stop Portsmouth
Card 3 = Osbourne Bay
Card 4 = Lymington Platform
Card 5 = Newtown Creek

We need to wait till tomorrow and see what the forecast shows. they can't get it that accurate for the next day, so relying on what is at the moment a 3 day forecast is silly.
I'll speak with Gill first thing and we'll call it from there.

I'll put me dry suit on so I dont mind rain, wind is the problem.
Suit tends to inflate a bit & you have to open the neck seal to let it out.

You've got to learn to prioritise Pash:aaahhh:
I have, Got a Wedding Friday evening - Don’t want to go but Mrs Pash said if I wanted her to come on the Poker Run I had to go to the wedding, got to go to the golden wedding anniversary - again payback for spending a fortune on the boat !!
Mrs Pash was at drivers last Saturday with me and I said I would take her to Gun Wharf TD Piped up with "he's spent at least £2K on the boat about time he spent some on you" :aaahhh:
So.... at Gun Whaf I bought 3 pairs of shoes (For Me) 2 pairs of O'Neil Shorts (For Me) and a new 7mm wet suit (For Me) as going diving in Catalina end of August...
For Mrs Pash....... I bought her Lunch
So now you know why Sunday is a NO NO
Not a case of Prioritising (Ive done that) more a case of PAY-BACK :aaahhh:

OK, We've (Gill & I) discussed this at length this morning, and sadly, we feel the best option, given the horrid weather forecast for pretty much all day Saturday, is to postpone the Poker Run until next Saturday. (Aug 16th)
We know this won't suit, or please everyone, but feel it's the right choice.
We had the option of running it the day after (Sunday 10th) but we've never run these events on a Sunday, because the evening bash, which usually goes on pretty late would be hard for most to do, especially those who've travelled a long way. Also, the other bookings such as lunch etc are not easy to change with such short notice.
What we need now is a 'roll call' of the entries who's seen this notice of cancellation. Gill is just emailing me the full list, which I'll post, and we need everyone to shout 'ye' to confirm they've seen it. It would be helpfull if anyone who has contact details for someone who doesn't respond on the list, to contact them and help us out here.
We're very sorry this has turned out this way, and obviously hope most can re-schedule with us for next week (let's hope the weather is a little kinder then).

Its a tough call to make however there won't be much fun if its Sh-te weather.
The Hunton won't be ready till next week as we found some more problems. Happy to help out with safety or if you loose some entries we will make up the numbers.
