Some good pics and tandem engines. Scroll down to see more build photos.

The S6 looks really stunning but I still can't find a price yet, but it must be mega bucks.

The real beauty of this thing is that the engines are not pointing down towards the stern, and no bending flexi drive tubing with all the problems that causes.
The engines are mounted flat with a solid rod drive shaft. A bit expensive but it just makes everything better and it looks the 'dogs'.

Sorry Rob, but you still have to use a flex drive (as they use the flex for steering and trim so tight corners are out) and put a bit of bend in it to stop it oscilating in the tube.
Does look the dogs though and you can get servo cotrolled trim using a flex drive and quad start threaded plunger.
I'll let you know if it lasts any longer than the RCM pile of poo.:hatchet:

MMMM rob looks like too few pixels to me you should work in CCTV no criminal would be safe.
I have just fitted one of these drives and trust me it is flex.

yep, with a water cutter then slotted together like one of those wooden dinosaurs.

The CNC reproduced my very very carefully placed spray rails - which took weeks of careful planning and thought to get exactly right - and some busted with sandpaper took about 4 minutes to remove them!:aaahhh:

Impressive…
I am working an a class 3b/c design for myself…was planing the build a scale model to do some testing…
Was the CNC water cutting expensive? Would you recommend someone that does this?

verytricky
08-04-2008, 07:20 AM
Would suggest the largest model you can build - preferably 1/3rd scale! And I do happen to know some people who do a very very good job of working a model from a design half on paper and half in your minds eye.....

I think the shoestring budget for my project ( http://www.boatmad.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=15254&d=1203255450 ) dictates a self-build…
On past models ( http://www.boatmad.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=9330&d=1153240118 ) I have modelled all the parts in 3D and then printed out full (model) scale cutting templates. Cutting all the bits by hand takes ages and would be good to avoid…the rest is normally relatively strait forward. CNC cutting is the way forward...if it is not to expensive...

RB engineering (http://maudesigns.com/) are the people we used, they did ours well enough and were very helpful.

don't use a hard shaft.
the best durability results are known with clutch and flex cable.
worse was flex without clutch because of shock loads during start up, kill and jump phases.
A hard shaft would be a killer for this S6!!

I like the idea of a clutch, but thought they never lasted in boats. What sort do you use?

MATHO
11-04-2008, 12:22 PM
we all use the same as in 1/5 and 1/4 cars, the bell has a inner diameter of 52mm. Have a look to my web-catalog at www.matho-powertrain.de and scroll below the engines and gearboxes, then you could see,
I think you guys in UK play with your models in salt water so it would be a good idea to use a bell & bellshaft made of stainless steel.
This could be a problem because the most Germans run in sweet water and the dealers here use the cheap normal steel bells & shafts (one piece solution as in the cars).
I have a better solution - as I think - but not forseen for my web shop.
Maybe in the future. I try to add some pics....
You see a blue anodized clutch set with stainless steel bell made by me
You see the same in counter rotating, made by me also thru gearbox
(could be ordered in black at www.wd200-modellbau.de
You see 2 pics with the normal system as well.

Thomas, I presume that's a centrifugal clutch. Do you use a lining on the shoes or is it metal to metal?

MATHO
12-04-2008, 01:13 AM
clutch. I made a system search in my brain but did not find the english word.
And yes: there is a lining on the shoes, don't know the material's spec but suppose it's similar to the brake shoes of passenger cars.
