Right chaps. Gill has asked me to post some intended dates for some fun boating events.
13th June
Some sort of event, running out of Drivers, could be predicted log, or maybe a treasure hunt type thing. Just a good crack, with maybe a BBQ in the evening at the yard. No big comitment, just a great social jobbie.
25th July
Provisionaly this could be a Poker run, I haven't seen anything that this date conflicts with, but I haven't looked 'that' hard, so if anyone knows of anything, please speak out. This would be a more traditional Drivers style Poker Run & party, based in & around the Solent, party & poker game at the yard.
We need a hands up (for both dates) to get an idea of interest.

Some details of the July 25th Drivers PR.
Entry fee for boat & skipper, £90
Additional passengers, £30
Launch & recovery by crane, including weekend trailer storage, £47.50
A deposit of £50 must be sent to Gill to confirm entry. please be aware that only entries received with the £50 deposit will be considered definite, and if too few definite entries are received, the Poker run will be canned before any unrecoverable monies are spent by the organisers, so get ya deposits out ASAP.
Looks like lunch will be at the Folly Inn, and the usual party at Drivers in the evening.
Haven't sorted a route yet, but will do it soon. Probably head for the Needles.

OK, as is tradition, can we have a roll call to establish who's intending to take part.
I will be doing the course tomorrow and am hoping that if the weather permits, we'll head down to the western end of the Solent, possibly round the Needles into Freshwater bay for the morning (longer) run, and a shorter mid Solent course for after lunch.
For lunch, this time we will be heading back to the Folley Inn after a couple of events using alternative venues. Andy always looks after us well and it's a great atmosphere up the Medina.
I understand Gill is having a dancing cage installed high in the corner of the hanger for the evening bash, as Chaos will be making an appearance as a (partly) leather clad act he calls 'The Glow Worm'. I'm looking forward to that.

For anyone thinking of taking part, who's never done so before, if you'd like to get a taste of what a poker run entails, here's an article run by Motor Boat & Yachting after the editor, Hugo Andreas joined us for for the DW run in 2006.
PDF format. also a short video of the same event.

BTW, the MB&Y publication is a little bit bigger than A4, so couldn't get every bit of every page in, but it'll have to do.

Jon Fuller
12-07-2009, 01:02 PM
We're going to run to some familiar stops, but ones we haven't visited on a Poker run for a while.
Start as usual, just off Netley in Southampton Water. Down to the first card pick up just outside Newtown Creek. Then on to and around the Needles and into Freshwater bay for card 2. Back the way you came and up into the entrance to the Beaulieu river for card 3, then into Cowes (refuel first if needed) for lunch up at the Folley Inn. That AM course adds up to 50 statute miles.
After lunch we restart outside Cowes and accross to Stokes bay for card 4. Back across the Solent to just along Osbourne bay for card 5, then home to Drivers Wharf for the party. The PM course is 20 statute miles, so a total for the day of about 70 statute miles.
There will be a alternative AM route incase the weather isn't kind, that keeps us within the Solent.
It's very important that all who intend taking part contact Gill with details and deposit.

OK, here's a few wayoints that will be of use during this poker run.
As always, choice of route along with all navigational decisions are down to the skipper on the day, but these positions, some permanent navigational marks, some just waypoints, form a route that I think keeps you safely away from danger.
Cutting corners off from the published route is your prerogative, but I wouldn't advise doing it without checking your charts and being very comfortable with your choice of route combined with the tidal height on the day.

It's not a stupid question at all. And, you've brought to light a typo on the pdf, so thanks.
the waypoints in the list marked 'B/Y Cardinal' mean that at that position there is a Cardinal mark (navigational bouy) that is coloured Black & Yellow.

With resect to the course we'll be taking around the Solent and it's approaches during the Poker Run this weekend, all skipper's / teams should ensure they have up to date charts of the area.
All skippers must be happy that the route they navigate to each stop is safe and suitable for their craft.
The route shown in the Poker run instructions chart is for guidance only and the route actually taken be each team/skipper is entirely their own responsibility.
Anyone not comfortable that they can navigate safely around the intended route shouldn't take part in the event.

Hi Gill,
Many, Many appologise that I didn't came today
I have left Warsaw wednesday at 4 am. Got Calais thursday at 1 a.m.
Guy which was selling me tickets for ferry told me that I can not cross UK border
with my dog couse it do not have some kind of stamp in its passport
Imagine how I was angry after making 1500 km and couldn't cross the channel.
Please tell everyone from Boatmad that I'm very sorry for that
I can not log in on their website from where I am right know.
The worst thing is that I really wanted to meet all of you and get a blast
with some proper drivers on proper boats.
I think I saw Shelly Jorry back in Calais with her Honda 225 race boat.
Hope it was her couse I only saw her sleeping in a car and didn't get chance to talk with her. If it was her please tell her hallo from me
Once again many appologise for that
Hope to meet you next time.

The Poker Run looked very cool from lee on solent! It really was a picture! It was getting on for 3ish I had forgotten it was yesterday but while we were having a beer at the Obourne View and i looked up to see a mini powerboat rac racing past, All your boats were beautifully silhouetted from the misty sun behind the clouds so we could see many boat leaping out of the water with the light shining under the hulls! especially the front runners! one of you really did take air! Shame the wind was drowning out the sound of you all! We saw a couple of boat hit some freak waves and came to a holt! hope you guys and girls didnt get to briused and made it all back ok! wish i had a good camera for what we saw it was impressive action because of the conditions out there!

Gordons boat has oodles of effortless power. Very nice indeed. an 80mph cruise is a walk in the park.
The motor has such smooth delivery it feels almost like an electric motor. Throttle response in the mid to upper range is pure fun. My only criticism would be it's reluctance to idle in the 1000rpm area. So trundling along the river is a bit fiddly. But that's a very small criticism of an otherwise beautiful piece of engineering.
Wouldn't want the fuel bill though!
Gordon McMath
28-07-2009, 12:55 PM

That equates to 1 mpg!:(
About the same as the formula burned on the 06 poker run.
Worth it though, I think......
I wonder if something like this BMW unit would have a vastly superior fuel consumption for the same sort of run out ...
''The New 5.5-liter V10 will see power rise to 550hp and will be mated to BMW's new seven-speed M DCT doube-clutch transmission or the six-speed manual gearbox. To combat the extra displacement's effect on emissions and fuel economy, the new engine will likely get a direct injection turbo-charged unit and BMW's stop-start technology which automatically switches the engine off when it is not being used such as when the car is stopped in traffic''
but then again it's cost would probably massively outweigh the Chevy in the short term
Jon Fuller

Quite a large file, so best let it download completely before trying to play.
If you haven't got quicktime player, you can get it here:

I have a couple of mins of very shakey 'wobble-cam' as shot by Nick which I'll stitch together and post. only really of Newtown creek stop. nice bit of Matt, and Gordon, plus some lovely cutting up by 'the usual culpret'.
I thought I made it clear! IT'S NOT A RACE!
i did notice you mentioned it about half a dozen times :) who was the girly commentator, did she leave her notes in her handbag, loved what she thought of the thundercat, very demeaning to the owner i thought

Now that I have recovered from the "Drivers Poker Run Experience", my first, I also want to say thanks to Gill and her very impressive team and also to JF for all his hard work as well.
I had a great time and would like to apologise to all those people who I am supposed to know because we talk here on Boatmad but I don't know in the flesh!! Everything was great even though DGS's Cat is not the best boat in the world to go out into a bumpy sea in. It just doesnt like it!! I was very impressed with the speed of all the mono's in the rough water and couldn't believe it when Zap Cats were going past us at Hurst!!
The run back from Stokes Bay was just the worst, into 4'/5' headseas just hanging on the plane. Someone was throwing buckets of water into our faces every third wave! Thanks Vee for taking the p...s as you went by as though we were standing still (we were). Apologies to the two young girls who came past us in their tiny mono up the Itchen as I was standing on the back seat - starkers - changing into dry clothing. It must have been a bit of a shock or a laugh whichever way you want to look at it but!
I will be at the next one but in a better boat, (Sorry David) I hope. Thanks again Gill and I will be in touch about that other matter shortly!!
ML.
