View Full Version : British Sportsboat Rally

Just got off the blower with old man Ring, and in between the bah humbugs & grumbling, he made quite a good suggestion.

How about, he says, we try to get all these wankers from Boatmad with their Rings, Phantoms, Marshans etc, to bring their fine craft along to a British Sportsboat rally, soley for such boats? We could try to get at least one of each model to attend, right back to the Ark that he designed as teenager.

Mebbe it's something we could plan over the winter, and it might gain momentum in time for a summer meet in Cowes or similar.

Who'd be up for that? (Monohull only I'm affraid folks)

Great idea, would love to see loads of sports boat flying about, so is just british boats as in the traditional sense, ie: Ring, Phantom, Marshan, Fletcher etc or any british built sports boat.
I think it it would be cool to see all boats that are not a common sight too like sharpe, pacer, driver etc. a salute to all the people that have had a go in the past.

I don't think there'll be a bouncer refusing entry to boats that don't *conform*.

It's just going to be a meeting/rally for us nobbers to have a laugh & chew the fat, 'intended' for boats like you mention. I'm sure we'd see all sorts, maybe even some foreign rubbish.

Does anyone have a 2009 racing calendar yet?

I'm thinking maybe between the Harwich event at the beginning of August, and Cowes at the end of August? Must be a free weekend there somewhere.

I'll talk to Andy at the Folly about food options and availability, and 'could' see if Gill fancies letting us meet back at Drivers in the evening for a sausage in a bun or similar and some music. Of course, she might tell me to take a hyke.

In order to book the Folly, we would have to confirm numbers, and pre-pay. I'd guess at about 7-8 quid per head, but the upside of commiting early is that we should be able to reserve the pontoon, which is a must, as any Drivers Wharf poker runner will tell you.
So if we can agree a date, and set up a paypal payment to collect the ticket dosh (I aint bankrolling it!) we can firm it up.

Graham, I wasn't intending to organise a cruise as such, just the meet up, and if we can spin it, an evening party. If I get involved with a cruise, there are liabilities involved that make it unatractive.

So, when we leave the Folly (assuming I manage to get us in there), you can all go where you like. maybe the Phantoms could go and play in the open ocean, and the rings could pootle round the Hamble, you know, horses for courses.
Then we can meet up in the evening.

Driver skill and experience is no proof of good hull design because I can use the same arguament about the 1972 Bollinger Round the Island race when in not nice conditions we beat all our own class 3B and those above in 3C.
I think we were 13th overall out of a field of leftovers from the CTC and class 3.

Gill has suggested we base this event out of Drivers Powerboat club.

All DPC members will get special rates for cranage and trailer storage if needed.

She is happy for a BBQ bash at the Yard in the evening, and Gareth's band will possibly supply some groovy sounds.

She also me mentioned a plan Gareth has for an organised cruise to Brighton marina for a lunch bash earlier in the year.

Still need more firm entries before contacting Andy to sort out lunch.

I'm up for the other cruise, Jon, Gill mentioned the idea to me and i think it will be a fantastic run!
Any entry fees you need let me know where to send them.
No excuse for all the bods with boats not to turn up to these do's!
Just one or two weekends a year for such events should be a must!
Well done.

That boat did not hang about so I guess its a sportsboat, it was built for Cruiser B just before the rules ( goalposts) were moved :headbang: so I built the current boat that you have, the R26 and I would say the R27 2X260 small blocks/ Alpha would be hard to beat in a 26.

Well Chaos,
You are driving around in the lower half of it ! and 'Pretty '
is not always the main criteria , just look at 'Ginge the Tadpole', yet he is capable of winning races even if it is in an old barge from the eighties....:seaman:

Mike, I was only larking around. I'm well aware that the 26's used the 27 cruiser hull mould. I've never seen a 27 in the flesh, but (from the few pics I have,) I always thought it'd have to be a boat you enjoyed the performance of (if thats a diplomatic enough response?). As for the "driving around" bit, thats realistically about 2 seasons premature ;)

Funny you should mention the "old barge", as I'm now up to my neck in helping Stewart with the reserection of "warlord" for marathon purposes(further stopping the 26's progress!). Caught between a rock and a hard place you could argue!

So I rest my case and wait a riposte of 'manufactured' evidence from the Shepperton Mafia .:argue:

Now, that's the second documented dig at craft from London Road!

'We', the supporters of the Sittingbourne masterpiece, will continue to occupy the moral high ground as we always have/will, this, by refusing to employ the cheap, easy and misguided approach of 'dissing' the competition in an effort to convince the populous of our superiority, perceived, actual or otherwise.

'We', would prefer to stay silent in our usual way, and let the onlooker decide freely themselves, based on their own observations, coupled with maybe the official record of our humble successes over the past 4 decades in Ski race, Offshore 1.3, 2.0, 4.0, Cruiser and class II, and of course, OCR, where 'our' dominance for 'decades' is, as you know, the envy of many designers/builders and seen by most as simply legendary.

PS. it maybe 'from' the 80's, but is clearly 'of' the present.

Now as you well know Mr Tadpole, I hold the designs and build of the Marque from Kent in very high esteem as also do I for Steve himself. It would be an unwise person to attempt to knock either man or machine from that esteemed Company. However as you also well know I do take great delight in teasing you and any cheap shot that gets you rankled and spluttering in support of your chosen poison is OK with me.

On the racing front we also have had a 'Modicum' of success over the years
with championships at regional, national European and world level and speed records also but there is no need to 'crow' about that .:hatchet:

Until we get to a workable number of interested parties, I can't try to Book the Folly, and until I try to book the Folly, I won't know if they can take us.

We had a provisional date of August 7th, but this turns out to be the last day of the Cowes sailing week, so the Medina will be ramped with WAFI's and booking the Folly might not be easy.

An alternative might be July 24th, which only appears to clash with a zapcat event, yet to be confirmed.

we bought a "stage 1" hull in 1973, then cold moulded the transom & o/d well ( both curved ) & then cold moulded the deck onto the hull and completed the "fit out " still running with the original 1976 Mrec 500 50 hp o/b on the original plugs & prop..........
