DRIVERS POWERBOAT CLUB
Hello all.
Just putting the feelers out regarding an idea that has been brought up.
A nice long jaunt to Guernsey and overnight stay. 5 boats have shown interest and the poker run weekend has shown that the club members would like to do more together, maybe the Guernsey guys and gals would like to meet up and chew the fat with us?
Please can anyone interested post here or on the facebook page so we can get an idea of numbers should this be organised.
Many thanks
Paul.

Yes yes yes, a Marathon race to Guernsey and round the islands would be amazing!!

Funny that should come up! I was only just talking to someone about how much I'd like to bring Marathon to Guernsey, it's the closest we'll get to the old 'big boys', and are ideal for us as they require little in the way of a safety fleet, no need for condor transport etc!
We could put together an awesome course round guernsey, herm, sark and jersey, unlike any other waters in the UK!
All I need to do now is chat with the marathon guys in the UK, get the rest of the committee to agree and hope I stay as Chairman so I can steer things this way!
I think it'd be awesome!

That's also a great idea Dowdy except that THEY won't let you run round the Isle of Man - Basking Sharks etc etc. The greenies will just shut you down - unless you have influence somewhere of course. Sorry to be a sour puss but I learnt that from RB08.

We too like the idea, although as John mentioned, weather windows are quite important to get right!

We fancy it too, saw the post where a couple of Extreme 26s went over for the weekend. I need to work out my range as the tank is only 200L. How far is the run?
VAGRANT
11-08-2010, 03:42 AM
I also like the idea of it, 200l tank capacity in mine too which should be ample to get each way with a small amount in reserve provided a good cruising speed is mantained, and we dont hit heavy weather that causes us to overwork the throttle @ lower speed climbing up & down waves.
Past couple of years weather is often quite settled mid sept-oct, albeit the evenings start to draw in.
is your fuel tank under the floor or back seat, mines under the backseat and think its about 150l

Hi Carl, mine is under the floor, under the back seat and slightly into the engine compartment. On the engine side its glassed in with access to the pump and sender.

Ok Guys, i may not be able to do this event myself but i have gathered some information that may be of interest and some recommendations.
If anyone would like to contribute to this thats fine too.
A passage plan to be submitted to the coast guard.
Passports are recommended.
Needles to Alderney 60Nm. ( this was calculated using google earth, if anyone can confirn please do!)
http://www.sailalderney.com/harbour.html
Designate a VHF channel to this cruise and maintain radio contact with fleet, CH16 for coast guard and CH 74 for Alderney harbour master.
http://www.guernseyharbours.gov.gg/vhf.htm
Refuelling stop at Alderney if needed and meet with any of th Channel Island Clubs for run into Guernsey (if they want to of course!).
Safety is paramount and all skippers are in charge of their own vessels.
Charts should be up to date and safety equipment is the responsibility of the skipper.
Remember that weather could affect the departure of the return journey so forward planning is necessary.
http://www.guernseyharbours.gov.gg/marinaMaps.htm
I will be gathering more information regarding berths and marinas and will post it when i can.
I'd be up for meeting you in Alderney and running as a group back here.

Paul,
I'll respond to you in more detail via PM, but we'd definately be up for getting a meet & greet party up to Alderney. Would be an awesome run back down!
Harbours are great over here, fuel is incredibly cheap and the atmosphere's brilliant, if 'Lain' is involved, you're sure of a good night (and most likely morning!) out!!
It's a shame the bank holiday weekend is clashing with cowes, we've got a 'round the island' poker run on which promises to be a great event.
That said, once you guys have the feel for coming over, we'll aim to organise events with you all in mind to see what you could join in with.
If you'd like to know what's going on with the racing & poker runs locally you can get all the info on www.guernsey-powerboat-association.com, or contact me on 07781 122 363, I'd be more than happy to help.
Look forward to seeing you all over here!!

Hello mate, I just ain't had time at the moment, but to be honest as its a fun get together i'm not sure exactly is needed, it may be worth talking to gill as far as the club goes. I have done a recommended course to follow and itinerary but who ever wants to do it needs to voice some dates. I will send what I have done to the club and someone may need to finnish a few things off. The main things are if you want a social while over there, moorings which I have some info, your own fuelling stops and meeting the CI guys. I na get a few things done tomorrow if I can.

Sounds good. Mooring won't be an issue, I can get that sorted for you but it's not busy from now on. Same with accomodation right next to the marina.
We're doing our 'round the island' poker run on the 26th September, which would be an awesome trip for any of you from the UK, I couldn't recommend it enough, would possibly be a great weekend to come across?
Failing that, we have races on 12th Sept (herm outer), 10th October (herm inner, phenominal course!!), and 30th October (havelet course), which would all be worth coming to see or compete in, we have inboard/cruiser classes etc!!
As for the rest of the organisation, bear in mind Paul, the more involved you get, the more responsible you ar if something goes tits up. Just something to think of. With a suggested route, itinerary and mooring/accomodation sorted I think you've got it sussed. Just need people to agree on a date, sign on to give an idea of numbers and pay in advance for mooring/hotel fees.
Anything I can do, just shout.
Cheers, James

Thanks very much james, what I meant by the organising was just basically gathering info regarding customs protacal etc. And the course was just an idea for those that have never done a trip like this to see what it's about. Obviously who ever takes part is responsible for their craft and crew.

Well, our round the island poker run is on the 26th September, who wants to come over for that? It'll be an amazing day for sure!
If that's too soon, our herm inner race, which is unlike anything you've seen before, is on October 10th. Well worth coming to watch or compete!
If youre gonna come across, it may as well be when something is on. Let me know what date you can do by replying on here asap and I'll get it sorted.
Please excuse any typos, having to work by phone at the mo as no internet in new flat yet!

Hi James,
Thanks for the offer, I will be on the island for a long weekend for my Wifes Birthday, but thought I might be able to watch some boats if the weather is good. Not sure about the size of my window of opportunity on the Sunday so am reluctant to commit to any plans now so I dont let anyone down.
If you can get back to me with some details of the event, that would be great.
Thanks, Jon.

The poker run is heading out from Fermain Bay. This would be ideal to watch from the Fermain Bay Beach Cafe whilst having lunch. Don't let the name put you off, it's a full restaurant on the edge of the beach, which I believe has been awarded as the 2nd best food from a beach Cafe in the world, second only to a place in Miami.
Have a look at this Guy's pics of the cafe and the bay.

Yeah, well.
The 'round the island' bit was cancelled due to bad wather, but a small group of us went to herm instead...
Ship to shore transport was a bit tight. Still had a great laugh though and Steve (the one in red) even won £4 in the poker draw!!
I was gonna post a report on OSO but didn't want to belittle their efforts stateside

I saw a couple of interesting boats during the weekend:
Clockwork Orange - In a field on Sark
67 Revenger RIB - by the boating lake in St. Peter Port
Any Info?

Ahh yes. John Guille on here could answer questions about clockwork orange, though I believe it's for sale.
The revenger 'blue dart' rib belongs to Jon Rowe on our committee and is also for sale. I'd love it, but can't be spending that kinda money on another revenger hull at the moment! If anyone's interested I can relay any information and/or a price.
Did you have a good holiday while you were over?

Yes thanks,
Its been 8 years since I was last in Guernsey so it was nice to visit again. We watched the sand racing on saturday afternoon, one guy was racing a fireblade and another a GSXR!! That was amazing to watch.
When did the eastern europeans move on to the islands? I ordered a Hawaiian Pizza at a cafe and was given a "White wine spritzer"! WTF.
The Islands are very pretty and a great way to get away from it all.

Ha ha ha, yeah we seem inandated with them at the moment, don't get me started on that! It's amusing when you get girly booze instead of a pizza, less so when you're girlfriend's about to have an emergency c section and the nurse can't understand you!
I love the sand racing, don't think you'd see that selection of bikes on the beach anywhere else eh!
Glad you had a good time,
James
