Some great boats shown there - even I (who knows nuffink) recognised plenty. Also some great adverts inc. one for Golden Arrow Marine where I used to work. I have rebuilt a few of those vee drives in my time and a 100's more of the Perkins engines shown near the back (Golden Arrow were Perkins marine dealers as well). I didn't start working there till '76 though.

I`ll add to your snippet Ian ,in that a Magnum 27 (the cut down version in sheer of your green craft) did appear in the UK.The sedan version which George Green bought second hand from Jake Trotter,and later became one of Gerv Brazier`s boats i.e.`Snoopy`.

I remember Alan Betteridge, bought a car from him in about 1970 !
Good chap, he did a lot of good races first in ALPHABET, & then in TRANSLUCENT, which was re-named NAUTI-FORD for the 1972 L-MC Race.
Very much a Southampton team !

Remember him well at ABC (Alan Betteridge Cars - hence race boat named "Alphabet") off Cumberland Place alongside the Royal Hotel not far from Fiona Pascoe's Dad's business. Used to see him with his lie-down Anzani skimmer at Ealing Hydroplane Club and learnt to waterski off Cowes, behind his 'racing' aluminium Pearly Miss (of Wroxham) with a 33hp Jhonnie (and that was a big powerful engine) in the 1950's. Remember the boat was fitted with the steering on the wrong side to facilitate turning around the race course which was often in the area where the Southampton Boat Show pontoons are placed nowadays.
Last saw him at the CTC Squadron prizegiving in the late 80's/early 90's.

Sadly Alan is no longer with us, but his boats were always "The ordinary bloke's racers", Alphabet, Dum-Dum & Translucent, & as such, he was one of the "beliveable racers".
I remember when he brought "JAZZ", the 1920's wooden stepped hydroplane, with a vintage King Henry Vauxhall (69 hp ?) power unit to Cowes.
Jazz s now in a museum I think (Newport ?), but Alan actually raced Jazz around the Island one year !

Perhaps.
However, when I bought a car from Alan, his showroom was on the east side of Bedford Place, nearly opposite the then coach station. Paralell with London Road, but west thereof.
This was in 1970/71.
It was about 100 yards up Bedford Place, from its junction with Cumberland Place (Where the Royal Hotel is), on the right hand (East) side.
It opened onto the pavement, but you could drive thro' to the rear access.
Alan Betteridge Cars (ABC) was on the wall, above the showroom doors as I remember.
I knew Alan beforehand, thro' a mutual friend of his & then work colleague of mine, & also thro' his race exploits in Alphabet & Hum Drum. (This was just before Translucent arrived).
Alan lived in Roberts Road, Shirley, So'ton, between Hill Lane & Shirley Road.
