Creating a class is a peice of p*ss, and the RYA will happily get involved if they think they can sell a few licences and a measurement certificate, the difficult bit is finding the competitors!
If your serious about it, you need to speak to an engine manufacturer, and be prepared to build a fleet of boats before you try to find customers/competitors, much like we did with the Honda series.
In the latest issue of World of Powerboats, there is an article on circuit racing in Korea, it's a bit like greyhound racing, using hydroplanes. It revolves around betting, loads of heats and a final. It started off small, but the sums of money involved and amount of spectators are now huge.
It has been talked about for this country, and I'm told a motor manufacturer has shown an interest, but they need to find a suitable hull.
Thankyou Tony

feck me Tony thats the first considered and intelligent answer since the Sun packed off for his holidays in the middle of October!
Correct me if i'm wrong, but where you basically saying that if enough parties stand to earn out of it, one can probably make a it a goer?

Err yeh...
It's all down to money in the end. I'm probably sticking my neck on the block but I'd say the current crop of "one design" racing is all about sponsorship and tv rights. If you can get enough people interested, then there's quite a bit of money to be made!

Whenever I've seen the Honda footage, the commentry goes something like:
".........and theres boat H2 "Brill Cream", Driven by Joe Bloggs ex Renault Clio Racing series Champion & Navigated by "Kate Smith" Former "Loaded" babe of the year and now supervisor of customer relations at Rollersteel trailers UK Ltd........This boat, like its counterparts is a cougar designed & built state of the art carbon-kevlar whotsit hull with the new 2000&blah Honda Vtec turbocharged badboy outboard thats dirstributed worldwide courtesy of Eddie Stobarts who'm use Firestone tyres and Shells all-new low sulphur diesel..............
then we get adverts, when we come back
the fckers crashed out!!...........then cheeky a bit of Suzy Perry for a quick w4nk or Tiff reading off a cue card!
now thats what i call motorsport!

What sort of 'hidden' costs are involved for (example) an OCR race / season.
A mate of mine has been running an XR3i in a one make championship this year.
By the time he'd got a racing licence, done the medical, joined the club etc. etc. he'd spent around £1,000 before he even turned up for his first race.
Over the season he spent £140 per entry (x12)
4 new tyres every 4 races @ £70 a throw
Fuel costs, transport costs, spares etc. etc.
My point is.....a competetive car, ready to go, can be had for about £1200. Which would seriously interest me. But then I get priced out of the game by large entry fees, silly 'hidden' costs all for (at best) a 20 minute race.
Is it the same with boats.?
Ah, hahhhh me lad, Parlez?
No parlez to be had ere my boy.
If you thinks the car racing is expensive, try trippling it for boat racing.
Thats why we ave to turn to piracy you see. I wouldnt normally break the law, no, not me, but i have to pay the Piper you see and that costs many doubloons me hearty.

The tyre costs are lower!
Everyone know's Tony Davis is a genius when it comes to 'good ideas' as Honda has him to thank for their 'One Class' design and series. When Tony launches his new concept using Gav's 'little boat' fitted with a 40hp Tohatsu and huge crowds turn-up to 'place their bets', Mr Davis will be deemed the savior of powerboat racing only the RYA might not approve of the gambling.....who cares what they think

Actually it was a Powerboat guru of far greater standing than that nobba Davis, who gave the world the the Honda 'one design', but I can't think of his name at the moment!

The Honda 'One Design' was the brainchild of Mr David Sewel, the editor of a string of british powerboat publications, inc 'Mariner Magazine', 'Raceboat' magazine, and 'World of Powerboats'.
He may not have had much public recognition for this, but it was him who came up with the idea, and approached Honda and Extreme Marine, and put the deal together, creating the original 130hp class.

Whether you like Steve Curtis or not (I think he's an alright geezer) you have to respect his ability/achievements, as you simply cannot get the results which he has, without a fair chunk of ability, and balls.
Money alone can't get the results he seems to manage with regularity, as proved by a good few racers in class one who've been trying for years to get their first world title, without success, on budgets comparable wth that of the 'Spirit of Norway' team.
We should be very pleased and proud that we have multiple world champions in the form of Steve Curtis, Neil Holmes, and Pete Little.

I agree with everything you say John. And it is truly great that we have top class people representing us on the world stage.
I dont really have an opinion on Steve as a person as i have never met him. What makes me irate is the piss poor standards of journalism that we suffer in the UK, as well as the fact that nearly all the publications are owned by the same company. This effectively leads to tedious reports. Why the hell is Steve writing his own column anyway?
And while im on my soap box, who the hell told Amanda Donahoe, hue or whatever the sweethearts name is that the picture of her winking that she uses on her magazine column is her best side?
I find it very hard to take these people seriously when they are made to look silly by the media. I know that the sport needs all the coverage it can get but surely self respect comes into play somewhere does'nt it?
As far back as i can remember, all sports of all types have found their own followers due in most part by "Stars".
People who are born to it. Donald Campbell, Evel kneivel, Pele, Sheen, Hunt, etc. All were very good at what they did, but had that extra, a sense of sportsmanship and fair play perhaps, a connection with the common man maybe. What ever it was they had it.
Unfortunately, i dont believe Steve has it, and that is why most people outside the boating world and Southampton have never heard of him. This should not detract from the fact that he is very good at what he does, its just that he is not the ideal ambassador for the sport.
Now, Shelley Jory has balls, is a lady and loves to be in the limelight. I reckon she will do more for the sport by way of media than Steve Curtis will.
Rock on Shelley. :D
On a lighter note, this is what we all like to see . . ..
