Can anyone identify what "Drives" came out of : THESE HOLES :) (http://www.mybayliner.co.uk/boatmad/holes.jpg)

I would say BMW or Volvo.

definitely not Merc, OMC or Yamaha

My Volvo drive uses 6 studs if that's any help. It doesn't mean there were never any which used 8, of course.

Having spent the last couple of days getting pretty intimate with a Volvo hole, I reckon that's a BMW!

Foolish

SECOND question :)

is there any way of fitting a "different" drive in in those holes (say mercruiser) without replacing the transom ? (adaptor plate ?)

or another that has a big enough "footprint" to cover the (confirmed) BMW holes ?

i have a number of varying drives/engines available but no BMW at the right price, so looking for other possible alternatives

Merc do a Volvo to Merc adaptor plate, and so does Mike Bellamy/Lansing Marine who may well do a BMW one as well!

The cheapest/easiest way, but not the prettiest is to bolt/laminate a 2" square over the hole and re cut for drive of your choice, sort of like a 2" standoff box!

Nothing else has a hole as big as a BMW! Yamaha and SX style Volvo both fit the Merc Hole!

I do have access to CNC & "water jet" cutting , Would it be feasable to use perhaps 3/4 or 1" Aluminium plate ( even if i had to enlarge the existing holes a little) to construct an adaptor ring ?

similar to this:

http://members.cox.net/rdgrauman/AdaptorPlate.jpg

instead of

not the prettiest is to bolt/laminate a 2" square over the hole and re cut for drive of your choice

"And a couple more to mount the two V8 DETROITS ive just found to the drives

The transom thickness needs to be 1.75"-2.25" (if my memory serves me right) as the two halves of the transom assy (inner & outer castings) have the drive shaft going through them at 12 degrees, a transom outide these dimensions will put the alignment out.

So your ali plate will work, as long as you pack the thickness up to 2" with ply, which would also give a little compression when the thing is tightened up, which would be a good thing.

cheers jon for confirming this :)

it's a good project , definatley worth saving, although it's been robbed "slightly" over the past 18 months whilst in storage the majority is still intact
"Mrs Foolish" agree's it's cheap at £500.00 ( well nearly :well: )

towing distance approx 6 miles to terminate in Woking (surrey)

where i will have a another crane waiting to lift it over the house (neighbours have been notified :D )

IT TAKES AN OLDUN TO IDENTIFY SOME OF THE OLD CRAP THAT USED TO BE AROUND IN MY EARLY YEARS. THEY ARE OMC 800 OR EARLIER SERIES, THE TYPE WHERE FOR POWER THE ENGINE WAS RAISED ON THE FRONT BY ELECTRIC MOTOR AND PIVOTED ON THE TRANSOM WITH A RATHER LARGE NEOPRENE GASKET SCREWED TO THE TRANSOM AND HELD ONTO THE ENGINE WITH A HUGE HOSE CLIP. SOME HAD ELETRONIC SHIFTING OTHERS HAD A TWIN CABLE SYSTEM, ALL RATHER ADVANCED FOR THEIR YEAR BUT CRAP ALL THE SAME.

Now I'm confused! are they BMW, or are they early OMC?

I remember the old OMC you're talking about Bill, drive upper looked like an old dustbin with the washing machine bellows to the transom, and for tilt (as apposed to trim) it had that awful quadrant gear and knuckle drive, not unlike the one used on outboard tillers for the throttle linkage when folding the tiller handle up. (on old motors)

THESE ARE NOT BMW AS BMW VERY SIMULAR TO VOLVO, THE ONLY CUTOUTS I'VE COME ACROSS THAT ARE MORE SQUARE THAN OBLONG ARE THE DREADED OMC 800 SERIES, AND AS YOU CORRECTLY SAY HAVE THAT AWFULL KNUCKLE DRIVE AND ELECTRIC LIFT ON THE EXPOSED RACK AND PINION QUADRANT.

THE BEST THING ABOUT THE 800 SERIES IS THERE AINT MANY OUT THERE NOW.

"THE OLD CRAP THAT USED TO BE AROUND IN MY EARLY YEARS":aaahhh:

Just spoke to the owner again and he said he removed a pair of BMW 220's (last of ) and has the origional engine numbers - would this help ? (will post later )

Does anyone have any measurements of the BMW and/or the OMC 800 series that might confim this ?

The Abbattes were normally supplied with BMW's, and I would have thought were built much later than when the "washing machine" motors were OEM!

Need some "Urgent" help .... The guy who is selling this won't give me a price range, just "make me an offer" ...So i am asking you (all of you) for an "honest" opinion of what you think its worth ????

The owner believes that it is "88 / 90 Tullio Abbatte" but i found (engraved in the fibreglass) "N=OF27-94" ....( possible "offshore 27 1994" ). On both port and starboard sides there are the remains of the numbering "16GE073D" , and the HIN appears to be "0120",

The Hull (although very dirty) is very sound ( fekin thick compared to my "binliner")
There are no stress cracks anywhere and although I only tested a small area the gell coat appears to polish well

It is missing "engines/drives & guages ( except speed/compass)... the cuddy is although "untidy" complete.
There is no trailer.

confirmed today that it was it was origionally fitted with BMW 220's and BMW drives that were removed and sold 18mth's ago and has been standing since (£100 per month yard fees)

NEED TO BID THIS WEEK, BUT HOW MUCH ?

All help appreciated.......... Foolish

I's go in really low and kick him in the nuts, coz no matter how cheap you think you bought it the feeling will soon disapear as you constantly hand over money to get it in the water!!!

What sort of motors/drives are you thinking of fitting?

What sort of motors/drives are you thinking of fitting?

I am also negotiating on a pair of Mercruiser V8's & Drives from a "Fire Damaged" boat, (although i would prefer Diesels)

The Fire was onland and the boat is "Toast" the engine bay has remarkably little damage (very minor plastic distortion), I will of course RE-SEAL the engines & drives.
95% of the parts i need are included and appear servicable.

I's go in really low and kick him in the nuts

How low ???? £££££

I have a price in mind but would appreciate a couple of "Honest" opinions of what you think it's worth ?

You could start by offering to take it away if he pays you a couple of hundred quid for your trouble. That would save him a grand over the next year!

I'd be warey of the fact that it's clearly had a good deal of water sitting in it (tide mark in cabin) for god-only-knows how long! This could well have caused some long term problems as far as structures go.

That aside, I'd offer a grand if I was still prepared to take it on.

Jon
13-06-2005, 05:22 AM
Im inclined to agree with you on this "Jonny - no - Strainers".

Id pay about a grand for it, just dont under estimate the amount of work ahead or cost for that matter.

Still it could make an interesting and nice boat with a little commitment on your bank managers behalf.

Honestly, I would give this one a body swerve due, at least due to the standing water it's obviously had in it. If you want a project, carly baby spotted a mid 80's formula 302 sr1 (called Formulator) at Port Solent that is probably in better nick, is complete with motors and drives, and has a cover on it so shouldn't be sitting full of water.

The motors might be knackered, but they're TRS drives with gearboxes which might well be OK. Best offer buys it, it's a marina repossesion - be quick though, not sure what the closing date for it is.

Carl
13-06-2005, 06:44 AM
was thinking about that one today, must be nearly time up for that one.any one interested should call the marina manager at port solent, portsmouth. as for the tullio,i would leave it alone, but if you really fancy it,it needs to be free

Discussed the "standing water" line/stain when i visited on Saturday with the yard owner ,

It had "apperentley" been moved (december) to it's current standing after a complaint from the owner who had to visit every 2 weeks to clear the blockage in the cuddy drain vents caused by leaves from the overhanging trees ( how much does a tarp cost ?? )

Unfortunatley i was unable to gain access to the cuddy (satuday) but will be checking more thoroughly on thursday ( when i hope to make an offer..... still  )

How long before the "Damage" is is detectable ?
( maybe it's worth blowing some "hard-earned ££" on a "full survey") or will the real damage not show up for another year or so ?

Jon
14-06-2005, 12:34 AM
"Standing Water"

Thats an interesting point, cos most boats (mine included) always have at least an inch of water in the bilge until she comes out of the water and is drained out.

I would of thought that standing water would only be a problem to a badly constructed boat or if allowed to freeze during winter.

A survey might well be worth it if you are really set on this boat.

As for the Formula, thats unlikely to be purchased for anything like what your looking at here. IMHO of course.

Good Luck.

After seeing a decent photo from inside these are BMW and as the finished production in 1987/88 the boat will not be younger

Ive done a bit of bidding in my time on marina Repo's, and in my experience to date, if they dont make the going rate they are not sold. And as the fees owed are very likely to be considerable for a boat to be held as security, the marina's are unlikely to give the boat away unless it covers the costs they are owed. So if anyone is truly interested in this boat, offer the going rate cos bargains are for E-bay only.:D

JON : the owner dosen't own the yard a penny , was just an estimate as to how much it had cost him over the last 18mths in storage,

Luckily the owner cannot make it this week so i have E-mailed
tullioabbatte.it and tullioabbatte.com (in italien & english) with all the details i have. (cheyenne is its origional name) hopefully they will at be able to at least confirm year of manufacture,

Foolish, my comment about the owner oweing the marina money was in reference to the Formula that Matt was on about. But i guess you know that now anyway. ;)

What seems nice about the Abbate's is the style and the fact that they are not common like Rings and Phantoms etc

Sent the details to "Tai" boats ( Abbatte ) dealers and they said they would forward them to "Tullio"... apparently he has a big interest in their histories,

really difficult to trace  as there is Abbatte, Abatte & Abbate, all looking similar and feckall about them.

Anyone know if i can trace it through "16GE073D" (6" port/starboard) , Obviously a registration number .. but who with ?

Under normal circumstances i wouldn't be so "wary" but why would you strip and sell parts from a perfectly good boat when it would be far more valuable complete :( .......The last thing i want is to get it "repossed" after i have restored it ... :aaahhh:

Will let you know if "T A" replies

There is Bruno Abbate as well and he built the 'Primatist' range I believe.

I had the brochure and I seem to recall one very similar to the one Foolish has been talking about.

No longer have the brochure. It's been handed over to the next generation.
