Do ski racing boats have to be mono hulls only?

To answer you i will quote the rule governing specification rule 5.1
here goes!!!
The boat used for towing skiers must not exceed 6.5 metres in overall length. The overall length is measured between the two perpendiculars at the extremities of the structure, including the skin or shell, which constitutes a floating vessell.Any extension to this length is restricted to 1.4 metres, this extension is not to be part of the running surface of the hull measurement.(still with us )?
ie. bow to botom point of transom = 6.5 M+ transom to propulsion point(last tip of prop)=1.4M
Here you have the official word ,but no mention is made in any rules i know of as to mono or cat hull, Rob Mcarthy used to ski race Kona which i beleive was an air entrapment hull sort of a cat, he would be better qualified to comment on its handling.
One can only assume that as no one uses a cat hull, it does not do the job for us, as the trick is to give the skier cover by laying down the flattest wake possible and a cat hull would not acheive that. After all that verbage, no there is no rule to prohibit a cat.
However i now await a correction to my knowledge of the rules.

Cats for Ski Racing:

Having tried to ski race many years ago behind a selection of Stapley cats, both single and twin engined, I can safely say it's RUBBISH. A cat won't bash the chop down like a mono and it kicks up too much spray, especially a single engined rig with the engine mounted centrally in the tunnel. As Barry says, there is nothing in the rules against using a cat but self-preservation comes first.

Another factor: It's difficult nowadays to find a cat under 6.5m long...... if you manage it please let me know... I fancy a play!

If I dont have to run class rules ( obviously not towing a skier ) then I can maintain 78mph with no real mods other than the chip and the prop.

I would have thought it was easier for a bloke with a water ski under his arm to get to Southampton from L-R, than for a bloke to get a complete rig from Southampton to L-R!

My truck is only 26 foot long...

I like the cost of free.

And I am storing the V24 at Bulbarrow Hill Farm, near Blandford, so it is closer than you think.

Poole race is next of next weekend. We can play after that?

My tri flattens the water quite well.

It is not as fast as the v24 though. It also has no real mounting points. It does have a nice viewpoint for the 'observer'...
