Gumball 3000 Deauville Rally

A note from Maximillion Cooper founder of the gumball 3000 car rally and sponsor of the Deauville Rally.

Dear Gumballers,

With our passion for all things fast, furious and eccentric we've begun supporting and sponsoring athletes and events that we
believe fit our style, philosophy and attitude to living life to the full.

So in the coming months expect to see pioneers of all action sports adorning the 'Gumball 3000' logo with pride, from racing
drivers to BMX riders, pilots to snowboarders; if they are living life to the max and need a helping hand to achieve their passion,
then Gumball will do our best to give them a helping hand!

And kicking off our support of similarly creative, innovative and wild events, we are sponsoring the first Gumball style race on
water, the "Gumball 3000 Deauville Rally". Starting at London's Tower Bridge on September the 2nd next month, powerboats,
hovercrafts, and boats of all shapes and sizes, sunseekers and ribs are all racing for 3 days to Deauville in France (en route to
Paris) stopping at various points to refuel and party.

Please see the attached file that will tell you more about it. There is still the opportunity to take part yourself, and even if you
don't own a powerboat and have never tried your hand at speeding on water, it is possible to rent something suitable for the
race, take a look at the packages available on the attachment.

This is definitely not for the fainthearted especially if the weather is rough but has all the makings of an all new and exciting
Gumball 3000 water event.

FWIW - I am proberbly going to enter. Cowes is the weekend before, and if I am still intact I will do it.

I dont know which boat to use. The V24 will be faster, less wet, noisier, and will survive a channel crossing better. The bladerunner will be more comfortable, and weather dependant, would be a more fun drive.

First day would be about 135 miles, and the second day the same amount more or less.

Worry: the website talks f an 'epic 200 mile rally' whereas the actual trip is about 275 miles??

I hope the planning is a bit better than the website!

I must recheck my calculations! ( No wonder I allways have too much fuel after every race! )


Is is possible to direct me to a location of 'better quality' information? The website is great for the public, news and press, but lacks basic information that I can use as a potential participant to decide *if* my boat can do it, or which boat to use.

Stuff like where the refuel points will be, what the stages are going to be, etc..

Also - Any idea why the race is not in the Notice to mariners on the PLA? They should be advising us by now - and they are not!

A notice to mariners will be going up shortly - the normal time is around three weeks before the event.
You can request a program by emailing the rally.

That is what the web site is saying.

Technically speaking the distances are about 85 nautical miles first day from Tower Bridge to Boulogne but that will increase if you take fuel stops and not a particularly direct line.

Day two is 112 n.miles if you hug the coast of France or about 102 n.miles if you go in a direct line.

That is measured off a chart with a pair of compasses but I'm sure some nerd will get a more accurate idea with a computer programme.

My gearboxes are off the bladerunner, and being refitted tomorrow - I had them checked out, as there was *rust* inside on the shafts and the impellers were completely shot.

I also had the oil replaced in the gearbox

So the boat should be well away for the event!

It will need a modification to the roof. Something like two sets of locking pins or some locking straps. The single central 'catch' is not good enough... On the way back, we hit some gusts of wind, and we had the roof on due to rain.. Suddenly the roof pealed off! the wind and boat speed were too much for it!

That's gonna take some pretty impressive tow vehicle, and a clear strech of road. I'd suggest the southern end of the M3 in the early hours of the morning!:drain:

Talking about taking the piss..... :duell:

Last year in V24 there was a lot of 'poking about' in other peoples boats, so we reset our GPS in the boat, and with the hand held in the car ran the boat with the gps on to exactly 79.5 mph, then stopped and turned off the GPS.

We went out on a practice run, came back and told everyone the boat was fugging perfect.

I just loved the look on their faces when they 'investigated' the GPS max speed!
