If I can establish that non race boat entries are being accepted and it's not just open to National' or World record attempts (which is what I understood to be the case) I'd like to go.

If you read really really carefully it appears as if you can - BUT you need to buy a 'basic' licence....

It appears anyone can run, £75 in advance or £100 on the day per 2 runs, additional runs are £10, lauching fee is also payable but no registration fee.

do you know if there's a crane?

Handbook states boats requiring cranes must make there own arrangements.

You going jon ? you dont need a crane, hutchy launches his 32 off the slip and his mate launches a 37 tomahawk off same slip.

I might do, but I'm not all that keen to launch mine from the trailer, or to be more precise, I aint too keen on recovering it with the trailer, as the trailer doesn't really fit too well, and I'm megga fussy about the bottom of me boat.

we'll see. does anyone have contact details for whoever's running the event?

Ah, right, does his missus still run the control during speed week then?

Advance regs state no entries for any category not recognised by the RYA and UIM. Best speak to Jim, he and Alison are no longer an item but remain friends

Not according to my copy of advance regs and entry form.

Here's a list of officials

Ahh, I think you misunderstand. Alison is no longer Jim missus. She is still an Official.

So you are going to miss the V24 record:argue:

Gonna aim for the monday and tuesday runs.....

I dug out my certificate from Windermere last year.

On the 15th October 2004 I averaged 74.97 mph over the 1km run. The record for V24 is 75.77 mph. My 'down' time was 75.03 mph, with my 'up' time 74.91 mph...

So 76.00 will get me the record:hugegrin: ( you have to exceed the record by 0.3% to claim the record!)

Thursday will be spend polishing the underside of the V24! Then a blanket on the rollers, so the freshly polished hull does not get scuffed in any way, and up to Conniston!

I have to improve on my last years speed by 1.03 mph to claim the record!

Do not polish the bottom of your boat. Certainly not with a wax polish. Fastest is to wet and dry the running surface with 800 paper just where it touches the water when running full trim. If you don't want to do that just leave it as it is.

How does that work?

When a boat starts to run at high speed the friction created between the hull and the water creates heat. Polishes especially wax polishes tend to ball up and increase the friction. Wet and Dry creates a smooth matt surface that actually helps break the surface tension of the water and reduce the friction.

i have noticed that when rubbing down plugs/moulds, the 1200 w&d finish is Silky smooth and very friction free, on a polished mould there is more resistance even when wet.....

Interesting stuff!

I spent a lot of time experimenting with this. I agree 1200 gives the finest finish as you would expect and I went as low as 600 but generally found 800 to be the best, the extra roughness seems to hold a very fine air barrier. The only time I have ever "polished" was on a painted composite Seebold SST120. We noticed the tunnel and inside of the sponsons took ages to dry. I was working for Porsche at the time and found they were using a 2 part polymer coating to protect the paint on a new car. I used this on the whole of the tunnel roof and inside the sponsons and then wet and dried the end of the sponsons. I am convinced this made a big difference to competitiveness and the boat dried in 5 minutes flat.

So this is serious advice?:duell:

Or am I not getting the joke?:dizzy:

I did hear of a Honda boat roughening up the edge of their steps with an addon strip, but that is actually illegal. Would this be considered illegal in any way? What thoughts do you have?

Techteam
25-10-2005, 02:45 AM
Serious as you like. This is not illegal as you are not adding anything. Blueprinting the hull has been an accepted way of increasing speed for a long time.

There you go then Mike K.

All that "lob" you keep plastering on ,,,,,, leave it rough !!!!!

More time for beer that way, :drink: plus a few minuetts left to spend pumping out the "Abbo" craft! :) :)

Hell....

I guess I am confused. I was advised to rain-x the bottom of the hull. Now advised to roughen it.

:wotzhapni

I guess I could rain-x it for Monday, then sandpaper it monday night for Tuesday?

At least the OIL and GEAR box fluid is taken care of: Thanks for the Royal Purple tip. I spoke to their guru in the USA and the local guy in the UK, and I have a plan for both the engine oil and the gearbox oil!

You do? Share it with us VT.

Give us the lowdown on the oils.

verytricky
29-10-2005, 07:06 PM
I have a gearbox oil that is the equivalent of 0w15 vs the current volvo spec of 70W95. It will not be any good for long distance/long usage, like putting in it your own engine. It has a life measured in hours of usage, rather than months!

I also have an oil for the engine which is rated at 0w10. This also has special properties regarding the sealing of the rings and something o do with shear and something else about not having something that other oils have and why that is better for short burst use....I dont understand, but the guys from Royal Purple are actually going to Conniston, and will be on hand with the various oils and testers and stuff. This 0w10 is like water. It is really liquid stuff. This whole setup is worth % extra HP at the same revs..

With the advice of several members, I am also better prepared for the actual run.

The boat - I think - can not get any better. What remains is if I can hold the top speed for the whole KM there and back!

The best of luck to you VT and I'm sure we'll hear the outcome soon.

Which day are you running?
