..Drivers Wharf/Boatmad poker run.
Should be able to confirm today, once we've spoken to Andy at the Folly.
We need a decent turnout for this, so please make the effort if you can.
Motorboat & Yachting are interested in coming along and doing an article, which will be excellent, so we really do need to put on a great event.
Poker run will be on Saturday, with lunch at the Folly (hopefully) and the evening bash at Drivers Wharf, Music, Videos, Hog roast, loads of talking bollox etc.
If the weather is kind that weekend, the intension is to have a run round the Island on the sunday. Hopefully get some good video footage and stills of everybody and have a posting frenzy the following week.
More details to follow once we've confirmed.

All getting a bit more definite now, the Folly pontoon is now reserved, and we'll be talking with them about food at the end of the week.
enrtry is 60 quid for boat and driver, 25 quid for each additional adult, and a tenner for each additional child, ie, kids under 3 months old :D ...only joking, we have a few 40 year old members that are technically elligable for the 10 quid entry.
So....Who's up for it?
I'll start:
Me (leviathan)
TD (Sphinkter cat)
ICT (P21)
Matt ??
Chaos (T21)
Nick Gilley (XS-IF)

19-05-2006, 08:49 AM
How far is it?
Jon Fuller
19-05-2006, 10:11 AM
Breifing will be at 9am.
Every time we do a poker run, the biggest problem is getting everyone to understand the concept of a timetable!
The pokerrun instructions will be posted here soon in detail, but the rough outline is, the breifing will be at 9 sharp, by which time, all boats should already be fueled, in the water, and ready to go.
After the short breifing & and a few questions, everyonr will make their way to Southampton water for the start of the first leg. Now, bearing in mind that it's a 20 odd minute run from Drivers Wharf, down to Dock Head (where the start is) the boats really need to be leaving drivers by 9.30 at the latest!....see the problem?
So, Breifing is at 9am SHARP.
If you can't get up that early, you aint cummin.
Start will be 10am, arrival at The Folly will be around 12-12.30 for lunch (remember, it's a long drag up to the Folly as well)
So the timings are quite important, please, please, please, make every effort to fit within them.
Burty, I haven't actualy done the course yet, but it's likely to be the usual, ie, around 70 miles in total.
Any other questions?

Correct, you can re-fuel in Cowes, though we ask that you do this on the way in to Cowes (ie, before lunch at the Folly), so that the departure from the Folly is straightforward, with everyone together. Like I said, please abide by the few rules that there are, as it makes the job of running the event much easier. When people piss about, holding things up, it all gets very shabby, people get grumpy, and the result is, there won't be another run anytime soon if the greif gets too much.

What's the longit/bearer made of? is it timber or foam core.
There looks to be plenty of vertical adjustment left on the main engine mount stud, so you could get away with a higher bearer position. I'd be looking at adding a metal plate to the top of the bearer (mebbe 10mm thick) either threaded to accept bolts through the mount, or with studs attached over which the mount locates with Nylocks retaining them.
The stud option makes for easier engine installing, as it guides the motor into place (I used studs on my Phantom)
With said steel plate, bedded on a suitable paste (say Crestomer, or bedded on some wet glass) and over glassed, it'd be stronger and outlast the boat by years.
here's what I mean:

Any help would be great, as it relieves the amount the existing boats will have to do.
I've not done the course yet, but will do soon, and work out which check points would be best suited to which marshall boats.

The bearers are/were timber and have completley rotted away, ie: if you remove a mounting bolt and insert a welding rod and poke around there is no resistance... "anywhere" :aaahhh:
that link was for Gav to quote me on repair before marina agreed to do it F.O.C
If by any chance it is back in the water before the 24th i'll come along to give any help that may be needed,

Rather odd that the timber would, in what is a relatively short life, rot away with no trace!
You sure they're not just hollow or foam stringers with the coach bolts haphazardly screwed into the glass? ...remember, it is a production Yank boat, and some of the production techniques used over there are a little flakey.
Summat don't sound right there to me.
Also, without some attention, those rusty pulleys will eat the fan/alternator & power steering belts at a rate of knots! You can see the black rubber dust on the offending port stringer already.
Is it still at Walton Bridge?

Sure is :(
Both bearers are approx 4'6" long, The "Port" bearer is completley hollow for at least 18" either side of mount after that there is a slight "mushy" resistance. The "Starboard" bearer has some wood in it although it is extremely soft,
The surveyor was also rather confused about the lack of material inside the bearers ( or at least where it had gone  ) and reccomended in his report to:
" Conduct an invasive inspection of the port bearer to determine the true extent of the problem "
Hopefully once they have opened it up all will be explained ...

The idea of the paypal, was to allow late (ie, getting close to the 17th June) entries to pay the deposit quickly.
As there's still a month to go, a cheque in the post would be better.

I'd do it in my boat but I couldn't do the required 6 knots all the way from Drivers to Southampton water without my old 2.4 oiling up and shaking itself (and me) to pieces.
Maybe I could cover my boat in bin bags thus making it look like a blackun then give it stacks up the Itchen to Southampton water where I could then discard them, beginning of CBR II stylee, to reveal my now red P20 :D. What dya reckon?

Thinking of driving down on the Saturday morning - anyone got any advice on traffic in and around Southampton as never been to drivers before.
Gonna use M25, M3, A33 unless anyone knows better.
Anyone else is driving down that morning?
Jon Fuller
15-06-2006, 08:56 AM
Coming in on the A33 is OK, it'll bring you in on 'the Avenue'. it can get a bit heavy along there, but is probably the simplest route into drivers.
I take it you're leaving pretty early on Sat then? remember that breifing is at 9am

Was going to take my 6.5 RIB - but re-engined with a 150 E-Tec HO.
But just have not got time to rig it by next week and don't want to rush it. Work is really busy which is good - but doesn't help with my own boating!
Also just been away at Phwlleli races so lost another possible slot to work on the boat.
Anyway will look forward to getting on the water with the new combination - but its going to be a few weeks away at least!

In light of this, anyone who's gonna need craning in, either tomorrow, or on Saturday morning MUST PHONE GILL TOMORROW ASAP! She can be contacted on the Drivers number: 02380 233302 or by mobile: 07771 577589

...The weather certainly was very kind indeed on Saturday, and it's the one ingredient that really makes, or breaks a poker run.
We're obviously hoping for some cool arial pics from the helicopter, which was organised by Hugo, the editor of 'Motor Boat & Yachting', who came along with Nick Gilley in the Sunseeker XS Sport 'XS-IF' to sample a UK Poker Run first hand. He also had a run in TD's Spectre Cat.
So thanks very much to Hugo for that, and you never know, we may even get a mention in the next issue of MB&Y.
Thanks for the Projector & screen should be given to ONYX Presentations, who have given the video kit FOC, on quite a few events now. So thanks to Paul Gilley.
Thanks to everybody who took part, and supported the event, with a special thanks to Gill, Clive & Garreth & the crew from Drivers, Gary Maybe, 'The Band', Britt, Naomi, the bird wearing the see-thru shirt and little white nickers, Paul Aylett (ICT) for videoing, and of course, our one and only Mark Pascoe 'RAM' for ripping the sh*t out'a everybody at the evening bash. (In a nice way you understand)
The cash pot was won by Brian Whiteshoes (bloody ribnobba) Taz won a two hour spell with Neil Holmes (didn't see him there, anyone know where he was?)
Most ridiculous boat award went to David Graham-Smith.
The best video moment (if you don't include my bumper car friend) has to be Chaos, when just a few feet to our stbd side, jumping some wash, and looking for all the world like a major stuff was about to take place. Sadly, the video doesn't really show his face, as it was an absolute picture!.... will post a vid soon.
Thanks again to everyone.
There are plans for a party weekend mebbe next month, and possibly another Poker Run a week or so before the Cowes event, so watch this space.
In case you haven't already seen them, there are loads of fairly high resolution pics of the day in the Media/Gallery section. Here's a shortcut:

Pretty cool that chaos managed to keep his foot down though - managed to make it look like it was all on purpose.

Sadly, the video doesn't really show his face, as it was an absolute picture!.... will post a vid soon.

I think it'd be great if there were more meetings like this, especially after the popularity of this poker run, which i think is partly down to BM getting involved.

Whats the make of the blue & white cat ?
That's the winner of the "most ridiculous boat" prize. (HTM SR 24 i think) We ran 50-55 most of the day and it was miles behind, despite a claimed 72mph top speed. The owner had a GSOH about it all though.

I've put a 'rough edit' together, but will re do it when I have time with a few stills and some bits from the evening event.
The music's a bit un-original (I used it once before in a boat vid) but seems quite apropriate, so you got it again.
As usual, be patient, it's a 42meg file..

We at Drivers would like to thank all you boatmad folk for making this Poker Run the best we think ever.
These events take alot of hard work and are quite stressful to put on but it is all worth while when we meet such friendly and enthusiastic people and recieve suche super feed back.
We would like to thank Jon for all his hard work and help and supplying the AV equipment so you were able to see your boats on the big screen at the party and also putting together such a great course. We would also like to thank Matt & Chaos for the help on Friday night getting all the boats launched on time.
Also it goes with out saying a big thanks to "That rude and arrogant man" Pascoe for his wit and charm through out the card game.
We are hoping to do our next poker run in mid august so watch this space...
Thanks for all your support.
Chaos also deserves thanks for the excellent banner - a day late. :bolt: :drain: :well:

Indeed, and don't forget all the help he continualy gives with the various stickers & logos, not to mention the countless members that benifited from him when he was in a position to help them.
Don't go saying things like that, he'll get all big headed, or start crying or summink.
I reckon he'll be well chuffed with Pauls footage of his airborne antics

Thanks to all. It was great weekend. Especially thanks to Gary for inviting me and the Mrs onto his Windy (Windy Gary?). The Mrs couldnt make it, she dont like boats much.
My passion for powerboats is stirring again...it reminded me of the marshalling with me dad from the RMYC back in the '80s (saw the photos of Didier Peroni and co. in Colibri - I was nearby when it.........). Superb gallery. Havent done any work all day.
So I've checked with the missis (yeah right) and its about time I spent some dough instead!! Boat shopping trip coming up me thinks.
