View Full Version : outboard vs inboard
looking for a new boat maybe next year spoke to proggresion in
america they reckon there 24 with 365hp inboard top speed 75mph but a 225hp outboard top speed of 72mph can this be right and why if someone could enlighten me
looking for 22-26 with cuddy that will still do 65+ my missus is not to keen on the phantom
there price all in with trailer was $59000 not bad given the present exchange rate

Yep they sure look lovely boats, I like the 21 (along with the superboat 21 n'all)
you could probably have something much cheaper, customerised to year needs/ wants with either in/outboard built in the UK.
I know what i'd do!
oh, i did!

There is a nice regal 26 foot in the classifieds that will do 57-59 mph no problem. Like new and its a cuddy.:facelick:

According to GPS and running along side on my jetski.
Bloody lovely boat. it really is.
not to keen on the regals would like a revenger 25 but are very rare but cant decide outboard inboard hopeing to find something with a blown engine to rebuild or replace with new
or maybe have something built new but dont think will have the budget for that
dont get me wrong i love the formula`s but i dont think they look right that short need to be 27 at least but i want something that is still trailable with one engine and most important quick with cuddy

Bert
you need a 26 extreme, with a single diesel, cheap as cheaps to run!!
not cheap to buy though £45000 second hand how much new
Captain Chaos
07-08-2004, 11:32 AM
erm, less than 45 big'ns i'd guess!
allright captain hows the phantom going my engine has blown 2 pistons
are you running a standard 200
i noticed you were running a 21 prop where as i have a 23 which is over reving don`t make sense what sort of mph are you doing
Captain Chaos
07-08-2004, 12:53 PM
Bert,
I havnt even got the phantom together yet...............and in all honesty completely forgot to reply to your PM!!! scincerest appologies for that!
21P was a guesstimate.
Havin spoken at some length to Nick Barsch (something of a conesseur of Phantoms) he reckons 60MPH +/- 2mph is achieveble with the bog standard 200 that i intend to put on it.
the problem i have is when i bought the boat did not realy know what the engine was bloke told me it was a 2.5l 200 it has a xr2 cowling with a 23"prop doing 68mph but is reving past 6000rpm my rev counter only revs to 6000rpm but is going past that hence blowing 2 pistons
i have been told with 23" should rev about 5500rpm-5800rpm and do around 60mph the bloke who is fixing it says the head is a 1998 xr6 200 having rebore on all 6 with all new pistons and rings so was going to try a 25" if anyone knows about such things would be appreciated or captain how to get in touch with nick
cheers

Nice boats! I think outboards make up for the extra power and torque with weight saving and R's. Outboards rule!! :hot:
Dont know if you've seen this?: (6mb) http://www.screamandfly.com/home/videos/tanner_6_6_2003/Boating%206.6.2003.wmv
could not open your thread but am tending to agree about outboards for power to weight ratio but seem to be very tempremental and this is the second one i have had to have rebuild
Hydrostream
21-08-2004, 03:54 AM
Bert, it's a video of some progressions, intimidator and superboat.
Right click and choose 'save target as' but it should just open if you left click it! You will need windows media player. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/9series/player.aspx
I do agree, outboards can get tempremental but a new one shouldn't if its looked after. And in the event you do have to rebuild it, I know which one I would prefer to pull.
brilliant clip i do realy like them 24 with 300 promax 85mph £33000 not bad either but haven`t realy got that much cash but missus is pregnant and wants a cuddy over the next couple of years taking some money off the morgage plus my boat but not that much like the extreme but all seem to be inboard and cant afford new one

Or heres a 24, no cuddy though! http://forums.screamandfly.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=63047
thats not bad at all haven`t seen this site before am going to look into costs for bringing one over or even just the engine brand new 300 promax $18,000 225 $12,000 got a mate who lives in florida but i am sure there must be a few hidden costs there was a company on ebay said they could import any boat from states but have not seen ad for a while
cheers there is some great stuff on that site
Hydrostream

Yeah, it's cool! I brought my boat over from the US. I organised all the shipping my self though.
Is that company is called Global Trade Partners? Its probably cheaper to organise it yourself and I found out recently that I paid way over what I could have if I used a US shipping co. I paid €3500 for a 20' container from Boston.
There are a couple of things to considder though, 1. you will have to pay VAT on your total including shipping. 2. you will need to have the boat CE certified to comply with the RCD, no major deal as uscg regulations are pretty much on par with the rcd.
Alan
cheers mate how much did you pay for your boat over there was it a lot cheaper than what you could buy similar here including costs i`m not going to be buying for a while but i am deffently interested even if it is just the engine loads on offer at very good prices and presume engine would be cheaper to ship looking for 24 boat so would need 30 foot container
do you still have to pay vat on second hand goods

didnt red mist used to have a web site? i cant find it now
Admiral P. Brain
24-08-2004, 11:26 PM
RedMist website??
Bert its all a massive trade off, it will make you cry running 300promaxs,
Take the step up to diesel power....
Tony doesnt make the 26 anymore, and apparently a new one with a diesel is gonna be priced £60k+
Admiral P. Brain
25-08-2004, 01:36 AM
if its choppy as it often is 60mph is prob about 10mph more than he'll do in those 21-23 lightweight outboard boats...
plus he'll have a nice cabin and safe/stable ride for his wife and kid.
Its an ideal boat and we are only selling because we want to go long distance crusing with 4 adults and a lot more fizzy pop!!
Admiral P. Brain
25-08-2004, 02:26 AM
we looked at a Hunton 37, but still not roomy enough.... downstairs ok... but cockpit space less than RedMist's!!
so sunseeker Tomahawk 37 mk II (1991-93) , always like these.... on the lookout for one with old big block petrols...cheap.. then re-engine twin yanmars 315 or maybe marin diesels 330, would hope this would give 50mph
or I love the old sunseeker Thunderhawk 43 !! (89-93)
lots more cabin and cockpit space...
have found one in Spain with knackered petrols.... but not sure if twin 300 diesels are gonna make this lump go over 40mph !!!
glen76
25-08-2004, 07:59 AM
have you got any more pics of red mist??
Louise
25-08-2004, 08:10 AM
I assume you've already seen these, Glen? http://www.boatmad.com/redmist.htm
60k is a lot of money for me but the progression is a 24 hull with same size cuddy as extreme 24 but with one 300 promax will do 80mph for 34k and still has bathing platform and sun pad outboard on bracket allthough is in america just won`t to know the benifits of inboards on this size boat
Admiral P. Brain
25-08-2004, 11:24 PM
Bert, understand your point, our boat is up for low 40's....
and I believe if the new ones are 60-70 then the old ones should hold their value?
your problem may be after spending 34k on a 24ft boat with a new 300 promax...
and burning 200 quid every day you use it, then selling and wondering why no-one will offer you over 20k for an un-known yank hull with a out of warranty timebomb on the stern!!
just my opion of course... would be amazing fun when you had it though !!

thanks for the pics, out of curiosity what sort of fuel does that yanmar in red mist consume?? gph or mpg?? any ideas?
thanks glen

on avarage at wot 11 to 12 gph but normal running closer to 6 gph cruiseing around 45 to 50mph
all IMHO

It's a Chaudron (Phantom 25) made in Malta, I haven't had a proper look yet but it looks well finished with really nice upholstery!
something like that is what i would realy like but missus will only chip in if i get something with cuddy and toilet and i dont think you get that untill phantom 28 saw jons at weekend lovely boat would love one but is a 2 engine boat bit to big and heavy to trailer regualy like the extreme but seems to be the only boat in this bracket and origanaly wanted outboard did you ever make 24-26 with outboards
been looking at some american boats and am starting to like inboards to just need so much extra hp compared to outboards and take up alot of space in boat
Rockey
30-08-2004, 02:09 PM
bert the Chaudron has a very small cuddy up front for an odd overnight richard the owner based in poole might be able to get a contact mobil number if your intrested or td might have it worth a look
Admiral P. Brain
31-08-2004, 01:13 AM
not really sure.... but at 3,000 revs she runs 45mph and does poole to cowes for approx £10
think thats about 40 miles,
would defently be interested in a look but not realy ready to buy yet don`t want to waste anyones time just doing my homework so i buy exactly what i want when ready
Admiral P. Brain
31-08-2004, 01:40 AM
sure we use the boat most weekends your more than welcome to have a look over etc.....
i meant the chaudron from the post before but would love to look at the extreme to the diesel figures sound very impressive i am solent area also should have my boat back in the water this weekend but they have been saying that for the last 3 weeks maybe can meet up somewhere as should be out running it in

cheers is tax rebate a 25 or is that the 28 the first one looks smaller both realy nice

It's a snide 28, made in Belgium/Holland by some rascal who hadn't quite got the hang of it.
It's got steps in the bottom, but they would have been better on the sides to make it easier to board. It's rumoured that it was built light and cheap to try out the feasibility of a stepped 28, it wasn't very successful!!!!

Thier shamless copy of the 28 looks very nice in the pictures, but heh thats no way to tell! I'd be interested in knowing how much?
Also try http://users.skynet.be/sky34435/ thats Raffshore (some belgiun nobbers who i'm sure have some association with the original bernico 21/23). They claim to have the moulds for the Phantom 28. Dont quote me but i'm sure Jon has already verified that thats Toss!!!
Bert, Just a question....wouldnt you prefer to purchase something where you have some input/ feedback/ comeback wher its build is concerned???? If you opted for even an extreme 21, wouldnt this have all what you want?? space (7ft beam), free range of colours, i'm sure you could fit a hob & a shitta in thier somehow. I may be talkin out me arse, but i think 1x IB would be adequate or you could go bracket + 2x normal 150/200 and have a pretty quick boat.
Just a thought
It'd be cool if someone had the conviction to build a genuine performance 30ft'r over here.............how many peeps on BM would be saving thier pennies for one???
the extreme 24 is what i will probably go for 60k new looking to spend about 20k + for the right boat which is about what they are going for 1998 not going to be for a while originally wanted an outboard but since i have had all this hassle with mine maybe try inboard there just does not seem to be much else in this bracket
would like something a bit different phantom 28 lovely but to big and heavy only want one engine nice scarab on e bay though but bit under powered i think want something to keep the missus happy but then rag the shit out of it when out with mates
i`am a speed freak

tony how much is a new one ready to go and what engine was in the one that did 79 mph on windimere only admiral said 60k + new
i do like them but just really having a look at what other option there are and answers to my origanal question inboard or outboard before i blow the money won`t be till next year anyhow

Black one is sold, guy has bought it to ship abroad. The race boat that holds the current speed record had a 502efi Mercruiser, around 450hp but the boat was a special!
The rumour of 60k is for a Yanmar powered 26, but the price isn't cast in stone. I've done a deal to sell the moulds to a customer who wants to build them, and that's the figure he has mentioned.
A 24 is a very similar boat, but my prices are much lower as I'm a registered charity I'm always ready to do a deal. Any small profit that I make goes to feed stray dogs, wild horses and the odd pie for myself.
I've also got a very profitable paper round so I don't really need the money!!!!
tony as you probably read i have been looking at maybe bringing something over from the states been importing most of the parts for my rebuild at a third or the price over here and twice as fast but could just compare engine prices as less to ship maybe you could pm your number and i`ll give you a ring
Captain Chaos
02-09-2004, 01:50 PM
Listen Berty, you heard the man!!
Thats really not a lot of dosh for a spankin new boat + i reckon if you fill him with Pies & beer and do the deal just before closing time......you'll steal one from him:drain: (sorry Tony:D ).
Then i reckon you import 2x225 25inchers from the states or pick up a couple of Xr2s on the cheap!!!!!!!
bobs ya uncle.....Nice, cheap & fast
Do the deal soon and we can test run'm together!

55mph top end on that 24, I know we went out on it in 2000, but well looked after if its the same guy who owns it...

Which boat has a 55mph top end?
Admiral P. Brain
02-09-2004, 11:16 PM
not yours !!
sorry missed all the recent posts... above related to 'one extrem to another'....
yes 60k rumour new price for the 26 not the 24's
that 2 ft of extra cabin space, means you can store more beer!!
Go for a new 24 from Tony and have the fun spec'ing it up to your tastes, then import some monster lump (old hp500) as you dont seem to be bothered about fuel prices...
with 475hp thats got to be closing in on 80mph !!
Mark Wildey
03-09-2004, 12:29 AM
Slight deviation here but just looked at the boatsandoutboards web site for the Extreme 26 and it has “switchable transom exhausts”. What are these?
Does this allow you to go in to stealth mode???
Regards
Mark
Admiral P. Brain
03-09-2004, 12:49 AM
switchable on the 24 you mean...
yes I remember it has 3 positions
flaps wide open = noisy
flaps half way
flaps closed and exhaust fully diverted thru hub = stealth
works from a switch on the dash..... very cool!!
finally after nearly 3 months the boat should be back in the water tomorrow but went out sat night got pissed up and ended up fracturing my shoulder and breaking a rib cant really drive it and in to much pain to go out to sea
