Right, here we go...

July 7th (pretty much exactly one month away) we can confirm the Drivers Wharf Poker Run will be running (unless the weather is dreadful of course)

Assuming we don't have an ugly rough sea, and/or horizontal rain, we will be running a longer morning section, Starting at Dock Head, probably down to the Needles, and round to Freshwater Bay, then back up to Cowes North basin, with lunch at the Fountain Hotel.

A shorter dash back to Drivers in the afternoon, probably via a stop at Ryde, or one of the forts.

A fabulous evening in the usual format at Drivers, Hog roast, beer, music, videos etc, plus the all important 'card game'.

As last year, entries are limited to 30 boats (plus the official boats), so don't procrastinate!

Entry is £75 for boat & driver, plus £25 per extra adult crew, and £10 per extra child crew (No Chaos, you don't get classed as a child, at least not in this case)

We have reserved slots at North Basin Cowes, so we can have a nice, leisurely, stressless mooring up session, but all crews are responsible for their own short stay fees (about 6 quid), so please visit the marina office before we go to the Fountain for lunch and pay them directly.

Extra hands of cards available if required for the evening card game.

Full instructions and details to follow shortly.

Contact Gill at Drivers Wharf on 02380 233302 for entries.
A £50 deposit is required to confirm booking, no deposit, no guarantee of entry! So please, no complaints if you miss out.

There is talk of a 'theme' to add a bit of fun, yes, and Bond is an obvious subject.

Would be better for you I suspect, if it were a Johnny Engish theme.

If the weather is OK on sunday (8th July) who would be interested in a wee cruise round the island?
I know that sometimes it all seems like too much aggro after all that has gone on the day before, not least all the beer drinking! But...if it's a nice day, it would be nice.

This round-the-island jaunt is mentioned in the rules/entry I think, but I wondered how many might be genuinly interested in doing it.

Hello all.

I have demanded from Captain Chaos this very morning a position as "beer handler" on board HMS Hampton Muncher or whatever his current boat is called. However as I disturbed his trip to the swimming baths "for a couple of lengths and a swift sauna" with a burly man-pal of his and put him off his stroke (didn't realise he could use his mobile in the pool) he hasn't rung me back. Is there anyway of me getting a petition on here to get the Captain to include me in the Poker Run?

Jon Fuller

Righto Poker Runners.

Due to a wee postal problem/misunderstanding/unhelpful council, the usual 'licence to sell alcohol' that's obtained for the poker run events, aint happening!
What this means is, during the evening party in the boat shed at Drivers Wharf, we will not be able to supply the strong stuff!

Soft drinks, and of course the grub (on this occasion, both supplied FOC within the poker run entry fee) is unaffected.

So, all you boozers are going to have to treat this event as a 'bring a bottle' party if you wish to drink anything alcoholic.
Sorry about this, but it really is out of our control, and obviously it's only for this particular event and all things being equal, will be back to normal for the next poker run.

regards

jf

i suppose the real question is, how soon prior to fitting did 'one' find that all the pumps are faulty. Then I'd be asking myself how comes i seem to have a 'stock' of faulty pumps?

Or is 'one' claiming it to be sods law?

Jon Fuller
30-06-2007, 08:04 AM
Taz's post sounded like he'd had 6 pump failures. A pretty unforgivable situation.

Maybe his choice of words was a little misleading, and he should have said, 'I aint got any pumps worth fitting', so haven't got the boat on the water yet.

Never mind, you'll need new ones for RB anyway, if you're taking it seriously that is.

Or is 'one' claiming it to be sods law?lets get it right.the pumps were either supplied with customers engines or arrived with boat .
1 arrived with tazs 260 which has seen better days after its misshap
2 tab pump came with boat ,motors on last legs
3 tab pump never got from guy he bought boat off.
4 came with 260 bought off here .needs selenoids
efi pump of tazs motor seized, the other low on pressure .
these were all checked and never fitted,
so rather than waste time and money pretending to race next week i surggested to buy new.

There's a lot of commitment involved in organising these Poker Runs, both personal, and financial. If there's a poor turn out for this one, it's unlikely there'll be any more this year, if at all.

Sorry to hear you guys won't make it.

The beef isn't with you guys - obviously it's disappointing you can't make it, but both of you paid yer deposit on time etc and secured your place.

The beef is with the large number of people of gave a commitment to entering, filling up the entry list forcing others to be turned away, and then not bothering to pay their deposit!!! I bet they'll still turn up on the day if the weather suits them and expect to enter.

FWIW I think late entrants should pay a premium - double the entry fee or something.

I think, for what it's worth some might say!, that we should try not to get too gloomy about the weather. After-all, we can't do anything about it, and this might be our lot for the rest of the summer. We can try to affect global warming by doing our bit to increase carbon emissions that day, or not!
Surely even if the weather is bad, considering the amount of effort that's been put in by the organisers, we should still try to go, wet weather gear et al, but 'cruise' as opposed to 'risk'. I'm up for getting wet, going steady, but still trying to get out on water.....Or am I mad!?

**** AN APOLOGY ****

Dear Readers,

In my post of last week, I may have insinuated that Captain Chaos prefers the company of men.

Following criticism received from the Captain (who incidentally has a boat called the Gay Charger, always records the Graham Norton show and has appeared on numerous dogging websites under the name "The exhaust pipe cleaner") I am forced to retract the insinuation of nudginess as he has insisted that he once had relations with a girl called Bernard.

For those of you whoi require a full explanation from the Captain himself please make your way to the third layby on the M3 after midnight where he will be able to tell all and perhaps help make a mess of the upholstery of your car.

Thanks,

The Duke.

Oh and also I can't make it to the Poker Run this weekend as the Mrs has revoked the permission slip.

Sorry

You lot should count yourselves lucky,i burnt my feet walking across the decks of ten poker run boats a couple of weeks ago,at least you have all of that lovely cooling rain to keep your boats at an acceptable temperature

I have 'Structural failures' and 'Mechanical failures' and after Poole Ana would rather be at Drivers than at Ramsgate, but if I have any chance of getting the boat onto the water I fear it is going to have to be at Ramsgate.

JF - Why not be the badass that we all know you can be and simply refuse entries that dont come with the deposit attached? Or alternately get the entries handled by some third party ( I have suggestions ) that will simply follow the rules, and no amount of personal influence or whining can get them on the list unless they have the deposit enclosed because the list is managed by some hard assed jobsworth with a rule book to follow.

Luckily for all of us, the weather broke the habit of the last few weeks and gave us fine dry conditions, with a bit of a stiff breeze, perfect for Poker!

However, in the name of safety, and to best please the smaller boats and family crews, we eventually decided to run the shorter course (40 miles instead of the 70 of the full course) on reflection, I still can't decide if it was the right choice, but eveyone seemed to enjoy it.

Thanks very much to all those who made the effort.

Also thanks to the staff at Drivers for getting everyone in....and out on time and without misshap, Gill, Gareth, Georgia, Clive, the Fountain Hotel and Cowes Yacht Haven for stacks of hard graft and patience.

Also thanks to the kid on the end of the Ryde Peir head for giving me the Wanker sign, not sure what that was all about.

=======

Winners on the day:

The Poker Pot went to Clive Baker & family

- - - - -(will come to me in a minute) won a bundle of cash for second best Poker hand.

Stuart 'Ace' won a magnum of Champers for third best Poker hand and also won the free Neil Holmes Powerboat school day for his aerial display off Calshot..

Andy Edwards won the 'most improved driver' award.

Pete Philipson won summat for being a bloody good sport, wearing the DJ all day on and off his Jet Ski.

Cookee won summat for coming such a long way, only to break down (and throwing a hissy fit at lunch)

One of the Thundercat drivers (sorry, can't remember name) won a folding marina bike (no, not that one) in the mystery prize draw.

The Dodges won some stuff for being long time supporters of these events, travelling from the other end of the world every time (Cornwall).

'Vee' got some swag for being the first boat to the first card pickup (but remember, it's not a race).

Here's a few pics of the day: (may put together a short video, but the raw footage is a bit limited)

1 & 2) Showing that as ever, he's a great sport, Peter Philipson (Little Pete) did the 'Bond' thing, off...and on the water. Great job Pete.

Thanks to all Poker Runners for making it another great day.

We have lots of people to thank but the most important is Jon. He is a very busy guy and yet always finds the time to help and brings along all his equipment that takes him ages to set up and then after the event pack it all away again. It is very much a busman’s holiday for him and we much appreciate his efforts.

Thanks also to Jackie for her help with getting the hanger ready and organising the t- shirts. By the way we still have a few left for those of you who did not buy them on the day and would like a memento of the event please email us if you want one.

I hope all who took part enjoyed it as much as we did.

Watch this space for the next Drivers event later on this year.
