Ok so going on from the top gear thread, who's interested in Pash1s idea of winding up a few rowers then clearing off to chatham for a party?

So far

Our mob

6 Fairline / Sunseeker / Doral
1 Revenger
1 Baja
1 Air Nautique
1 Rib (that we might disown)

Darren and Taz with the phantoms I guess (what about the searay)

Pash1 with whatever he owns at the time!:hatchet:

Puppiesballs
Mr Rob
Dan
MikeK

So that's 18 before we start.

If John's happy we'll use the Boatmad name?

Possible Programme:

Friday evening hook up at St Cats and a few beers for the waterborn lads.

Saturday morning catch up with late arrivals aim for lunch at Chiswick Pier 12.00.

Leave at 2.00p.m. and head for Chatham. Approx 70 miles so 3 hours for the slower boats and PAsh1.

All through the lock and raft up on the event pontoon. Take advantage of the shower block which is probably the best in britain and up to the barbie area for food, drink and bollox talk about who got there fastest / wettest / upside down etc.

I'll organise the food but might need a hand as I'm prone to burning things when I'm drunk:brown:

I'll see if I can lay my boy's band on for the night (if Chatham are up for it).

Early morning lock for those interested and a days skiing / ringo / boarding etc in the Swale with lunch at Queenborough or on board.

Recovery possible at Wallasea / Chatham / Shoebury / Queenborough

Launch sites not too sure. Anyone?

Petrol. This is a bummer, No petrol on the Thames at all so you'd need to be full on launch and hope you make it to Chatham / Gillingham:aaahhh: I know from experience that the Revenger won't make it from Southend up and Back on a single tank (240 litres) and that's without gunning it.

Likely costs:

roughly 20 quid berth for those at St Cats
Again 20 Quid for the night at Chatham
A fiver for the lunch berth at Chiswick
Band FOC
Food say a tenner a head
and that should be about it
Charidee doantion?

So who fancies some?

Weekend in April or March?

Have you guys thought this "might" affect future events being run?? Not wishing to pour cold water on a fun idea.....

Have you guys thought this "might" affect future events being run?? Not wishing to pour cold water on a fun idea.....

In what way Tim? I wasn't being serious about running down the rowers:hugegrin:

All above board will clear it with PLA / River Police / London VTS / Woolwich Barrier. Slow run up to Wandsworth Approx 3 miles then the river is free to use at whatever speed you like as long as you don't endanger other users by your actions.

Barrier down is open water and Madway is similar rules down to just short of Gillingham where the eight knots kicks in for about 5 miles down to Chatham

Pash 1
12-11-2007, 10:02 AM
I will be there with "The Cat"

or a rowing boat......

Jesus I have some good ideas (sometimes)

70 miles with my 300 flat out should increase global warming by at least a few degrees and if I tow the boat behind the Hemi its going to be a beautiful Summer....

Will have to keep a beady eye out for the Peruvian Knitted Hat wearing, Guardian Reading, Bleeding Heart Liberals, with Stripped Pine Flooring wearing Moldovian Bearthing Blankets but apart from that should be fun

SO COME ON LADS SIGN UP

motorvator
12-11-2007, 10:05 AM
And to quote the PLA / Thames Gateway / Olympic Committee / Red Ken etc etc one of their primary aims is to promote leisure use of the thames:hugegrin:

Understand where you're coming from Tim but there's a big difference between a rally of leisure users and a full bore offshore race hence the invention of the poker run.

The river is free to navigation as long as the navigator has due regard for what's around him.

Having said that if anyone is thinking of putting the london / calais back on the calender I'd be the first entry

do you think all the authorities would see it that way?

sounds a great idea to me

Right enough of the chit chat tonight I'm of to do my bit at the annual Southend RNLI do (which normally involves too much to drink and buying some useless junk at auction which I then have to explain to the wife and make up stories about how beneficial it all is)

I'll reckon we'd have their full support as we pass three of their busiest stations in the country.

The rules is the rules. As noted on the other thread I have already had a run in with the pillock at woolwich who thinks he can make up rules as he goes along.

He and the London VTS were left with a better understanding of the rules of navigation on the thames from the PLA who at the end of the day have the last shout.

You will also find the river police nothing but helpful as long as you're not being a dick and trying to nick some diamonds from greenwich or plant a bomb in westminster. Both of which I have to admit I have given consideration to:hugegrin:

Any updates to report Mr Motivator ;fish;

I can safely report that RNLI dinners can be fatal to ones health if one makes a glutton of one's self with the red wine. I can further report that continuing festivities in the casino is hazardous to ones wealth. Oh that's not what you meant:hugegrin:

Dates

Sat 8th March 14.32 high tide

Sat 22nd March 14.30 high tide

Sat 5th April 13.22 high tide

Sat 19th April 13.21 high tide

All in UT GMT TTFN ROFL so could be an hour later or earlier however that works:hugegrin:

Ok I think I've got it, all the above tides are half past 2 in real money given bst on 30th March.

These give a run down with the outgoing tide. The alternative dates in between would all be around 7 in the morning so leave us banging against the tide at just the wrong time

So best lock out of St Cats is 12.30 which might blow that out. Limehouse is easier on tide times but what an area:down:

So what's everyones thoughts?

Couple of pics of Chatham. Event pontoon is immediately behind the lock in last pic and barbie area is beside lock in the second pic.

 any room for us ski racers towing a skier ?as long as the dates does not clash with any of our races

Now that sounds like an idea, specially as we will be passing all hallows. I guess we'd have to keep the skiers out until through the barrier as I can't see the authorities agreeing to that.

In fact we'll probably have to keep the speeds reasonable down to here anyways. So might be best to cruise to Woolwich barrier and drop the flag at that point?

Easter weekend seems good to me, after all its the second coming of Christ and JF can make it so there is hope for the rest of us!
Also may be able to get T.V. coverage over that weekend, got a few contacts at Thames T.V and London News.

Just imagin it loads of good looking boats and a shabby revenger going down the Thames - Otters being drown along with rowers and never forgetting the "Bank Vole" global warming increasing (No need to buy the Villa in Playa Bianca) and you never know possibly Clarkson in a splashed Phantom.....

I guess Easter weekend would be good but has anyone got a race calendar, don't want to leave a section out if we can help it.

Right I'll get onto Chatham and Chiswick and see whether I can book the space.

Someone needs to think about launch / recovery sites.

How many would want to stop overnight at St Cats? Seems a good way to drop in and dump the trailer down to where you'll be coming out.

Anybody else up for giving a hand. Say a couple of people medway and blackwater way that could get a few of them interested.

I'll deal with Sarfend / Crouch and Pash1 thinks he knows everyone on the south coast.

Just the Phantoms I think as the other boats might not have the range or the speed to keep up, unless they do a deal with Taz and hire his Searay for the weekend.

He did mention using that as his 'sleepin boat' for the event but as there is a hotel at Chatham it might not be needed.

Lookin forward to this event :seaman:

I think you just dont geddit. There are two most different boats with different ethos trying to achieve similar ends.

and lastly I have the Weapon , tooling halfway there, I just need the financial backing to see it on the water with the right engines and drives, but mostly the right crew with the appropriate 'Killer Instinct'

Perhaps His Holiness could help to rustle up a team ??

And lastly you CAN quote me on this one...

21st / 22nd / 23rd march is agreed

Ok the score so far is that Chatham have agreed everything including band, barbie, tie up on event pontoon, logistics of getting the rabble through the lock etc.

There is a brand spanking new Ramada on site for kip over.

Still waiting on a reply from Chiswick pier for muster point but we can get over that if we need to.

I'm still formulating in my mind how best to inform PLA of our intentions but will do over the next week or so.

Pash1 is convinced the telly will be there.

I'm just doing the event document with timetable etc so probably next week for first copy.

Thinking of poker run with stops at Dome, Sarfend Pier, Swale and finally Chatham?

Spilt into 2 fleets with the faster boats setting off an hour later so we are all togetherish as we come round the point into the Medway?

As a rally theme there will probably be an on board quiz card to fulfill or something along those lines?

More opinions the better.

Sunday if weather good I will organise lunch in the swale on the concrete lighter at queenborough and Pash1 will have the opportunity to show some of his world famous stunts behind a ski boat.

Obituary
Common Sense

Today then, we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as knowing when to come in out of the rain, why the early bird gets the worm, life isn't always fair, and maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense, lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you earn) and reliable parenting strategies (adults, not children are in charge).

His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a six-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense, lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job they themselves failed to do in disciplining their unruly children. It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer Aspirin, sun lotion or a sticking plaster to a student, but could not inform the parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense, lost the will to live, as the Ten Commandments became contraband; churches became big businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims. Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar can sue you for assault.

Common Sense, finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realise that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, sued because the coffee was hot and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense, was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust; his wife, Discretion; his daughter, Responsibility; and his son, Reason.

Well before we get over excited about it, we need to find out facts. BBC is indicating that the limit is aimed at the clippers etc and is from Greenwich to Wandsworth.

Now anyone who's been on the river around there recently will realise that if this is the case then it's an eminently sensible decision.

The number of passenger carrying craft has increased dramatically in recent years and they all work on the basis of achieving the highest speed they can. Now when you have say 20 of them all within the same hundred metre stretch you would not want to be in say a Phantom 18 with a blocked fuel line as you would be unlikely to stay afloat too long from the wash they create.

It hasn't appeared as a notice to mariners yet and when it does I would suggest it will be aimed at the commercial operators as PLA already distinguishes between commercial and pleasure users with their regulation.

The wording of halving the existing limit seems to bear this out as there is no distinct speed limit for pleasure users in place already.

Regardless, over the next week I will notify PLA of our intentions and no doubt we will get hard facts back. If really necessary we'll cut the run down slightly and run from Greenwich to Chatham.

Nothing on the PLA website though and one assumes that, if this affected all craft a 'Notice to Mariners' would be issued. As you say, worth contacting the PLA for clarification.

I think we can safely say more than assume. I somehow doubt they can enforce a speed limit if they don't tell anyone it exists:bang:

Sure they can. There is a catch all wording something along the lines of 'consistent to safe navigation' or something similar. Which in effect means 'if you are going too fast or creating too much wash or generally doing something we perceive as dangerous we can haul you over and fine you.

Have you never been yelled at for going past Bow police station (where the police boats are stationed, in the unrestricted speed limit zone.) too fast? I have! :seaman:

Officially the stop and search was in connection with terrorism, as we were going towards the parlament.

We were stopped just before Tower Bridge after leaving South Dock. The two boats that chased us were from the Bow station. Initially they said we were going too fast, and changed it to 'Terrorism' after I explained that there was no wash and no speed limit!

Maybe Thames Tear up, (with consideration for others) is like kicking all of us in the "rowlocks", because we all consider the position we're at & take the appropriate actions ....... But there is always a bad egg in the box that gives the hole chicken farm a bad name!

As long as the rules are clear on here (world again), I see no problem.
London to Calais race did not raise eyebrows, as did the Honda bash a few years ago.

PS; tried to get out today at Greenwich to test the speed limit enforcement, missed high water, double rowlocks!
Plans are to go again on Wednesday. Watch this space.

Well, my credit card was skimmed here in the UK and the bank froze all my cards and accounts whilst I was on the plane, touched down and no cards worked and all I had was 150 euros in my pocket.

Other than that I had a real good time, very productive work wise.

others will be able to respond in a more technical manner but my answer as a resident / worker in the big smoke is "no".

there is a locked marina in docklands near city airport (queens-something I think) with some access but any further west is a no-no until you get into the non-tidal-ish bits...and I think that would be by special arrangement.

depending on you range get in Southend-ish and recover from thereabouts on Sunday?

verytricky
14-01-2008, 04:39 AM
Southdock marina has a ver large car park, secure. Launching by slip at the row club, then through the lock.

Isle of dogs has three slipways which can be used mid to high tide, with parking - not secure - alongside.

Gallions reach can launch you with a forklift, and store your car & trailer. access to river -3,+2 HT or more if you got a little boat.

It should be a great facility, but it's never really worked that well for me.

Don't know if things have improved, but when I lived there the watersports centre were a major pain in the arse and were about as unhelpful as possible for anyone wanting to use their slip. Then you're also stuck with limited tidal access to the lock - you would need to time your return carefully as you really don't want to leave your boats on the holding pontoon in the river because they would get a battering.

verytricky
14-01-2008, 08:41 AM
It has not changed.... But it is an option.

The Thames is VERY tidal and it is always difficult to launch recover. I always used the Isle of Dogs, but I lived there, and we had our own slip, so it was easier for me.

dbe1
14-01-2008, 08:52 AM
Ok guys why don't you have your trailers brought to Chatham you must have some mates that can help, no facility to recover by slip at Chatham but they do have enough parking, the nearest slip is at Gillingahm Pier about 5 minutes by road and about 15 minutes by water due to the local speed restriction.

In all seriousness Mike it would be really good to see you there.

It might be a little bit of a challenge as you say coming round canvey point. It can rough up quite badly there dependant on wind / tide.

That said there are some larger cruisers doing it so 30 kts and you certainly won't be on your own so I say go for it. (will you fit on the swim platform of a squadron 55 if it gets too much:brain:)

The other alternative is to join us on one board one of ours and you would be more than welcome.

I've been keeping an eye out for this speed limit B*ll*x that the PLA are threatening and having spoken to Pash we are inclined to keep it as a formal run from Greenwich to Chatham (still 60 nm). That way we avoid any feather rustling and solve some of the fuelling problems.

Anyone that wants to run up to the city is then on there own so to speak and we don't get assocaited with any problems.

Also I think it will make it easier for everyone launching / recovering as it opens up some slips. All Hallows springs to mind, there is also a slip at sheppey on the yantlet and numerous places around erith etc.

Probably do 2 starts splitting the fleet into slower boats setting off an hour earlier with the faster fleet following after, then we all come round into the medway together which gets the safety aspect of canvey point dealt with.

My guess at the moment is that we should see approx 50 boats on the day so it looks like we're going to be in for quite a laugh.

I believe they are trying for a speed limit between wandsworth and greenwich pier so yes below that shouldn't be an issue at all.

I'm not suggesting that we don't run down from wandsworth if we want to but for notification of organised rally, we could keep it as a start point of greenwich pier. That way we don't interfere with the consultation process that is going to occur.

Each individual boat has the right to traverse this area at speed if they so wish at the moment as I understand it.

See here

http://www.portoflondon.co.uk/display_fixedpage.cfm/id/2375

I'm a little concerned that we could rock the boat and give good reason for a speed limit to be imposed. That would go against a couple of members future potential plans.

I also want to leave ourselves in the position that we can make bloody sure that they hear our thoughts on imposing a totally unjustified recreational boat limit.

If on the other hand we want to go willy waving to make a statement then I will be right behind it:devil:

Is there somewhere Day Trippers can launch and join in with out too much hassle?:brain:

Right, I've read through several pages and cant find an answer, I want to take part but I havent got anyone who can drop boat at one point then drive to anoter with the trailer. I could do with knowing if theres a point that I can turn up at, Launch, Park car and trailer over night(safely and legal) and retreive the next day?

Ok I'm back.

Can't be too much help on the south side of the river myself as I'm from sarfend.

But options as far as I can see: (www.boatlaunch.co.uk)

Gravesend sailing club

All Hallows

Erith Town Ramp

Bargehouse Causeway E14

Greenwich Yacht Club

Amsterdam Road, Isle of dogs

Johnson Drawdock, Isle of dogs

Millwall Dock Slipway

South Dock Marina

But for all that if I were going to want to launch, leave car and trailer and recover next day, I would say:

Two tree island - Leigh on sea - wide shallow concrete slip - 5 hrs either side GPS to get out of ray gut, plenty of safe parking. 45 mins up to start and 45 mins back from Chatham next day.

Ness Road, Shoebury slipway - Sarfend - wide steep concrete slip onto sand at mid tide - 3 Hrs either side, plenty of safe parking same timescales as 2 tree. Difficult to get over rise on top with long low trailer, revenger does it at 27ft with full height towbar on a rangie but scrapes the trailer:hatchet:

Chas Newens at Putney - Very wide concrete slip, never used it but sure he'd be up for a few boats around him. One hour down to set off point and as long back after chatham and back.

All Hallows - I know nothing about it at all except they race from there occasionally so must be capable. 45 mins up to start and 45 mins back from chatham next day.

Now to my mind that should be plenty of options:hugegrin:

Don't think it's a race buster, just a tear-up!

Spot on Wayne. The whole idea was to go one better than Clarkson. But if he wants to launch at Chatham and race himself up there and join us to tear up the rivers on the way back what's to stop him:hatchet:

Erith Town ramp is for dingys only (no cars on wooden ramp).
Greenwich Yacht Club does not have room for visiting trailers/cars. Parking restrictions apply outside (unless one is a member  ).

Isle of Dogs slipways are "tennant-key holders" only. Well they were when I last looked.

Bargehouse causway, you don't want to leave you car & trailer there!

South Dock is through a lock, make sure the tide times are OK or you'll be stuffed.

Chas Newens, Maybe MikeK can best comment on this one. Very limited parking as I understand.

Good slip but wouldn't want to leave a trailer there for too long. parkings a big problem as well.

Maybe lads, it may be an idea if you require a launch site (in an area close to your arrival site on the Thames), to post it on here.
That way, questions can be asked to the "peeps" that may know a solution.
Well done MikeK for the info on Chas Newens. Twas as I suspected.

What is the time slot Chatham lock gates will opperate either side of high water? Need to work out my depart/arrival time for the recovery on Sunday. I've only got a window of 2hrs befor HW & 1hr after!

I've got the tide tables from the PLA, the nearest they quote to Chatham is Southend-on Sea, Sunday 23, HW-13.42hrs (GMT), at my recovery point HW is 14.43hrs.
If the locking times are limited it's gunna be a very sprited run back. :aaahhh:

Chatham is not restricted by tides unless it's really bad springs and even then you would get over the sill with trim up at low water.

They also operate 24/7 but make sure you book your lock out the night before as when its busy there can be a wait. Having said that it's a big lock and they would fit you in:up:

Dan, Roofer, Bad boy.

I'm not up to speed on the south side of the river, but I would say best solution on north side is Two Tree island at Leigh/Canvey.

Very slight ramp which allows you to walk the boat in. Access all tide bar the bottom two hours and plenty of parking. Sheltered.

Opposite the junction of Thames and Medway so you get a chance to blow the drink out of the system in the morning.

If you are using this follow the bouyed channel out to the 'Leigh buoy' just short of Southend pier before you turn up river.

http://www.flashearth.com/?lat=51.531179&lon=0.626106&z=18.1&r=0&src=msa

All Hallows seems to be an obvious choice for the south side but I've never used it.

http://www.ayc.uk.com/activ.html

http://www.flashearth.com/?lat=51.478276&lon=0.637593&z=19.2&r=0&src=msa

Now if those two locations don't sort you I'd be surprised. Both are about halfway down the course so give a short run up in the morning and a short run back the next day.

Of course if you wanted to be closer to the start with excellent road links, you could try tipping it off the QE2 bridge:hatchet:

Wayne

The plan was to launch at Greenwich Yacht Club, but that may change to Chiswick.
GYC ain't too friendly about our sort of boats, they have to put-up with me because I pay my membership as do those of the rag & stick brigade.
Parking is OK for me, but for visitors it's a bit of see how GYC feel on the day! Overnight parking would be a problem, use of the slipway (£15) is allowed if it don't interfere with one of their "Races".
