Racing Info?

Hi to all, Just wondered if anyone could give me any advice on getting started in racing, basic races etc.

I live on the Isle of Wight and run a good old marshan 19. Any info about local events, licenses and clubs etc would be very well recieved.

I'm in cowes!
previously you would have had to wait till August and attempted to go RTI as your first race (not the best starting course!), or paid ridiculous amounts to tow the boat across the ferry,
but there are supposed to be a couple of basic races being run in the solent in 2008, no dates that i'm aware of yet but they'll be accessible from the island.
You'll find everything you need to know regarding the rigging of the boat, safety equip etc on this site.
I'll let you know when my machine's back on the water and we'll have to meet in the solent! :up:

My pleasure, sorry there aren't any action shots. There's not been much action yet. Still in the process of getting it set up nice.

Any information about its past would be great. I got the boat when I was running a fibreglass shop up north as a project around 5-6 years ago. In its original guise it had " Bridlington Breakdown recovery" on the wind shield and was red and white. It also had a name down the sides in HUGE letters. I can't actually remember what it was though. It came with a rotten XR2 on the back, And I mean rotten, crank gone, bores gone, gears gone, no spark, the list goes on. Anyway to cut a long story, I got my arse into gear 4 weeks ago and she's somewhere near finished.

I think it's a variant of a marlin mirage! Bought it on Ebay off "driver 510" who's on here. Just bought a twin turbo subaru for it, should be a bit of fun!!!!

Great in the rough too!! Biggest problem is getting them round a corner fast. I loved the 19 that I had, very predictable. Make sure you empty the bow tank in a following sea as they have a tendency to stuff!:up:

I presume the Brass Monkey at the RMYC Poole is Jan? or early feb - thats a basic race you could enter and good fun. I presume it is running as with tradition and will be on the same day as the RYA powerboat awards dinner in Bournemouth - should be on the RYA website

Cheers guys, I've actually noticed that she does run with her bow well down even with the bow tank empty.

It should not be running bow down. Where have you got your fuel tank? Is the bow tank surrounded in foam?

We will probably have a potter around at the Brass Monkey to blow away the cobwebs.

The tanks are in the back, i'm still trying different props and engine heights at the moment, when it's all set up it may be different. What setup would you guys think I needed, cleaver, chopper, cavitation plate height??:headbang:

I'm in the process of fitting one of bobs big foot nose kit as last time out she got a little warm!!!

Any help will be well recieved.

The transom on the 19 was high, for skiing we cut it down by 2" as it would not pull a skier out. That would also overcome your cooling problems.
When you say "tanks are in the back" are these the standard fuel tanks you get with the outboard? If so you will need to get a larger fixed tank made up for racing.
We used to run either a 23" lazer 2 prop or a small hub chopper 22" or 24" on ours. You certainly do not want a cleaver.
Check around your ballast tank in the bow, Marshan used to foam fill around the tank to provide buoyancy. The problem was that when it got wet it acted like a sponge and retained the water, hence giving you more weight in the bow, keeping the nose down. If it is foam filled then I would rip it out and put some airbags up there.

The high transom explains the cavitation i've been experiencing at lower speeds and when setting off, once up on the plane it feels quite quick. The good old boat speedo read 65, as per usual this was taken with a very big pinch of salt!! GPS is ordered!

Getting a bigger tank is not a prob. What sort of size would you recommend?

Basic races are usually 30-40 miles. If you said 40 and your engine say used 1.5ltrs per mile then you would be looking at 60ltrs for the race, allowing for getting to and from launching you would need a tank that held 70ltrs minimum. I assume it would be just basics you are looking at because your boat is too short for National racing. You could do the F200 series but you would need a tank capable of giving you a range of 70 miles.
A cleaver prop would give you stern lift which is the opposite to what you need.
You should be getting mid 60`s with your 175.
