500,000volt switch failure

Dunno if any of you play with H.V. (no not H I V ).

Normally(in the UK) you would use an expensive piece of switch gear to get the supply off-loaded from a cable before you use a simple isolator like the one in the clip to ensure the juice cant jump back down it for any reason while youre working on it.

Perhaps this was their expensive switch gear!

I think they were left with no option but to use this safety interuptor as the switch, thats why they knew to video it, those guys knew what would happen.

Interesting to see that once the arc opens and the gas gets ionised, the spark will jump any distance and even rises up in the air with the heat.

when it opens click view on the right

I did a 15KV 50Hz AC dielectric stress test once (well 4 times actually). It sounded like an overhead line and the fairly rigid High Tension cables were shaking up and down all by themselves.

A qualification test on a 3000V bus bar enclosure. Part of a high voltage Comms On Power Diplexor. The Diplexor strips the comms from the power.
