Hi Dan,
I use spybot S&D, and also some ad-aware thing both free downloads.
One other good bit of kit is called hijackthis. Not so much of a ad removal tool more program based. Allows you to see absoluletly everything that is running on your pc and teklls you what it is so you can delete all those crappy spyware progs.
None of the above are really anti virus but worth having anyway.

Has improved a lot over the past couple of years and is not as "heavy" as Nortons or Mcafee....
Something else worth running regulary is CCleaner (Crap Cleaner) http://www.ccleaner.com/

I've always found AV sw opinions are like arseholes - everyone's got one. I've not used AVG, but have used most others, and all are more than capable of doing the job.
The most important thing is keep the virus definitions up to date - most common grievance about a product is when a "customer" blames the software when they've not kept their virus definitions up to date.

my AVG one, has a wee chat with 'head office' every day at8pm to update itself, then at 10pmit runs a full virus scan, again, daily. If you're using the pc when the scan starts, it's a bit annoying coz it slows everything up,as you'd expect. But you can stop it, or pause it till you're done, then let it carry on.
All seems to work pretty well, and is easy to use. Norton drove me fkkn mad, so I removed it and went to this one.

You need to open "scheduler", and change it to 2 in the morning
