Set up as a company, LTD or private trader.

And Registered at company house.

Otherwise trading on a website open for all to view will invite MR Tax man to pay you a visit!!!

The Banners are for Trades people to advertise their products/websites.

Hi Cye,
You can set up as a sole trader to which does not involve paying any reg fees.
Dont panic, it wont be as compitition!!

Dan you will need to speak to an accountant, as a sole trader you will still have to register with companys house and produce final year accounts, which are tax deductable.

I don't mind a little compitition, just wanted to make sure you are aware of what to do!
I know a mate who was furniture spraying for cash in the evenings in his garage, the tax man managed to catch up with him after he had been doing it for about a year, unfortunatley they just made a guess as to how much he had done and calculated the tax on that.

Same goes for people that sell alot of cars to make some extra cash, it soon gets noticed.

That's not quite true.

As a sole trader (I've been a sole trader sinse 1994) you don't have to register with companies house, and there's no law requiring the use of an accountant, though I do have one as I don't want the aggro myself.

Obviously you do have to submit accounts & pay any tax etc. due, but you're perfectly within your right to do your own accounts.

Well at long last I should be set up as a sole trader within a couple of weeks, un-real just how simple it is and after speaking to Business Link and the Inland Rev I can get away with paying hardly any NI etc etc, so John it looks like I will be needing one of those banner ads afterall.
This time next year I could be a millionaire!

Err... Not quite. It is very simple, you're right. I was a sole trader from 1990 -2001 and I did well enough out of it, but it's not the licence to get rich quick that most people think.

All you basically need to do is to inform the DSS that you're going self-employed as of whatever date. They will ask you to pay your Class 2 National Insurance (cheap) by DD preferably. They will also ask for a Class 4 payment (bigger), which will be added to your tax bill which is paid twice yearly.

In your first year you'll pay hardly anything, because a lot of your set-up costs will be written off anyway, plus you always pay tax in arrears, ie: You'll pay tax next year on money you earned this year (if you see what I mean).

You'll be billed by the tax man twice a year, at the end of January and in the summer, and they'll want the money within 30 days. No excuses.

Best advice I can give is:

- Get a local accountant (a guy who works from home is ideal, you don't need big name accountants as a sole trader!) I used to pay my guy £150 a year all-in, and it's deducted off your profits anyway so it's not taxed.

- Of all the money you take in, put a good 25% into the building society (Preferably 30%) This will be more than enough to cover your tax bills when you get them, and leave you some left over for fun too!

- Keep ALL receipts, record EVERYTHING (Mileage, consumables, etc..etc..) and let your accountant sort it all out at the year end. Just keep it all filed tidily in date order. There's no point in giving your accountant a shoe box stuffed with random receipts because he'll just bill you more to sort it all out. Keep it tidy in the first place and it's cheaper and easier.

- Don't get clever. The Taxman has heard all the dodges before, and there's so much stuff that a good accountant can claim back for you that there really is no point in trying to save a few quid at the cost of sleepless nights and looking over your shoulder all the time.

There is no legal requirement to have an accountant (Unless you're VAT registered, which you won't be unless your turnover is over 54 grand as far as I remember from when I did it) but bear in mind that if you don't submit proper accounts of what you've been up to then the taxman will bill you for what he thinks someone doing your job typically makes. And he usually estimates high, so if you think it's unfair it's up to you to prove what you have made. And if you're gonna do that you may as well do it right in the first place!

Shop around for a business bank account with low rates. Some are free for up to a year!

Above all, HAVE FUN! You're your own boss now.

Yeh, kinda, just enjoy doing things that interest me and if I can and cover my cost at the same time as doing a few bits for others then that suits me. IMHO I`'m not looking to make mega bucks by charging over the odds, and seeing the industry that I work in it just makes sense.
Not only that I sell a few bits to members on the forum and very occasionaly advertise things on here and as I'd like to continue to do this its the only way to go otherwise I'll have people moaning that I have an unfair advanatge over the "trade"

Ah, riiight.

Well, if it's a bit of 'cash in hand' I certainly wouldn't whack up a banner ad!!

Yeh your right to a degree, but some traders that advertise here may also class me as trade, and if they have to pay to play then I guess I should to, not only that if I can do enough of a product range then its better to link it to a website instead of lots of ads on the "for sale/wanted" thread
