Embarrassment factor 10

Spent saturday giving me boat a clean (never knew it was white) and whilst taking one of my many coffee breaks, that gormless but likeable fool David Graham Smith drives up and gets out for a chat.

"anyone going to the sportsboat show" he says, "Mike Lloyd is there with Mike Ring, those are the most dangerous hulls ever built" he tells us!!!!

He then see's me sitting there, and starts the "well, what i means is, they are quick but tricky to drive, erm, uh, better go", get's back in his car very red faced and goes!

I say to the others, "a bloke who has a legendary HTM, has the cheek to criticise other Hulls!!!!"

Have i got this right Tony, this "red faced Baboons ass HTM Owner" says that the Spectre 30 is one of the worst hulls ever built?

Based on what?

I know they have a tendency to get dirty and be under utilised, but that dont make em bad, does it?

dont knock them HTMs, they are the only amphibious cat i've ever seen. They can climb up onto pontoon at drivers with ease

I almost bought a HTM once, but was saved by an engine failure on the sea trial. I was young and stupid then. Well I still have my stupidity.
Didn’t the HTM builder, Steve Coulombe, sadly die driving one of his own creations?

Yeah, it was the new, larger one I think. 3 peeps killed I think in that accident.

Sadly, four were killed. The boat was the then new 30 footer.

In his defence, I have known DGS since 1979 and raced against him from 1980 onwards for over ten years so I know full well what he is like but he has always remained a good loyal friend – particularly recently. Like all of us he has his faults (many) - who hasn't? He is a huge supporter of offshore racing as his “David’s Diary” film account of the RB08 shows (here on Boatmad) and loves everything to do with powerboats.

Having said all that, I was aware of his views on the Ring and have never been able to find out where he got his misconceptions from (apart from him being beaten by Mike in the London to Brighton race of 1991) and was determined to show him, one way or another, that he was wrong. Arguing over a pint in the bar never gets you anywhere, you need to get out there on the water and prove your point.

Mike and Andy took him for a spin down Southampton water in the Ring Ranger on Saturday and apart from Andy scaring the hell out of David’s Lady by throwing the Ranger into a tight turn (she wasn’t prepared for the lean as she was used to the HTM cat which doesn’t of course, lean that is) David and his Lady ended up by being huge enthusiasts and now want a longer run before buying one! So round the Island here we come.

Out of Pure interest , What was that 'Penthouse' boat the Graham-Smiths had in the early 80s with the Lancing RSJ hanging out of the back ?

I could be wrong but I think that was a Hunton 23 which was eventually sold to Bob Horwood on the IOW who then continued to race it in Cruiser Class.
