Jono,
I looked at getting one of them out here when they arrive in September.
One thing that puzzles me is how Mazda got vehicles with suicide doors into Britain as suicide doors where made illegal on British roads donkey's years ago!
The only difference i can see is that they are un-openable from the outside of the vehicle. i.e. no external door handle.

Hmm, they've been out here in the Great White North for 5 mths or so and I see a few around. I think they are F-UGLY but they do at least look different from the norm.
In the spirit of Fugly cars the new Jeep Compass http://www.jeep.ca/en/promos/compass/index.html is even uglier in the flesh than in pictures!

Why exactly are they called suicide doors? Im guessing as they have two that open outwards making it easier to jump out?!? It is a damn ugly car though

Nah, its actually one of these.... http://www.dodge.ca/en/caliber/photogallery.html jacked up a bit to give a modicum of ground clearance and a new body which is an unsuccesful sttempt to graft a jeep grill onto a swoopy car body.
The Calibre in its own right is a nice looking vehicle

They became known as suicide doors after a spate of nasty accidents.
With a conventional door, the door itself acts like a shield when it is opened to oncoming traffic. Should the passenger open the door and attempt to exit into the path of an oncoming vehicle, the door would act like a shield and the passenger may escape with nothing more than a broken leg or two.
Try doing that with a suicide door and you wind up being a Cadaver for GM!
Mazda and others have now got around the law by devising a design whereby the "suicide doors" can only be opened after the front "Shield doors" have been opened. This method obviously provides protection to the passengers in the event of a mishap.
Though quite who would open their door into the path of an oncoming lorry is beyond me!!

I agree that they are FUGLY, but they make a change from all the Toyota Landcruisers and Nissan Patrols that are everywhere in Dubai.
I settled for a new Land Rover Defender TD5 as noone else drives them on the roads here. I am aiming to drive it back overland to England when i return in 2009.
You should see the Valet Parkers faces at the "Burj Al-Arab" on a friday night when we pull up in the Landy! Once they get over the shock of the vehicle they have to run around and find someone who knows how to drive a car with manual gears.

I have never stayed at the Al Burj cos its to dammn expensive. I believe the cheapest room is about 800GBP/night!!!
We do use the Restaurants and the "Star War's Bar" occaisionally though.
Everything that looks gold in the Al Burj is gold 24 carot! If the hotel is fully booked for the next 400 years it will break even!!!
It wont be the worlds only 7* hotel for long though.

Yeh the cheapest room is just over that, is the restaurant not massively expensive too? There is also an island complex near there I believe that is in the shape of the world with palm trees at each side (currently being built) no doubt they will have they same Legacy of debt as the hotel!

The Restaurant prices are what you would expect for a 7* hotel however, i have paid more in london Hotels! Generally, eating out is very good value here. Its actually cheaper to eat out than to buy the food and cook it yourself at home.
The island developments are coming along nicely. You are correct, one is in the shape of a map of the world and is called "The World"! Highly imaginative i know. There are also three number seperate "Palm" islands currently being built along the coast.
The "Palm" islands include Hotels as well as private waterside properties. "The World" is exclusively private only. Rod Stewart is believed to have bought England! Bloody Scots. There are underwater restaurants where you can see the marine life through the windows, its pure Disney.
We have a villa in "Arabian Ranches" a private gated community in the Heart of Dubailand. I can watch the motor racing at the Autodrome from my Balcony. However what they have started to build stretches some 10km in every direction from us!
Dubai is truly a great place for a holiday, just dont plan on living here.

No, the palms will make a fortune for the developers.
The Al Burj was a loss leader, it was never meant to make money. The concept was to bring in the tourists which it has been extremely successful at doing. Then whilst the tourists are here, they are fleeced of every penny. Thats what keeps the Burj going.
