Sorry geez!, as it turned out I didn't go anyway

Had an interesting short journey in the rain this morning at 6am, that brought to my attention to the fact that the trailer brakes did sweet fa

All four wheels on the motor locked up with no noticable reduction in speed, now that gets your attention!!, four tons shoving a 1900 kilo Shogun up the road.
Didn't seem too bad in the dry, but on the wet road.....shiiiiiiiiiiit!, didn't much fancy 600 miles of that, so I sadly had to bail out mebbe next year in Coniston

Blimey! Scary stuff! Assume you (and boat) are all OK? Were you on your way to Windemere? And what's the reference to Coniston? Is there no speed limit there?

Yes, evertins fine, I went from where I store the boat, to the M25 (3 miles) and decided it was a foolish journey in those (feckin pissin down) conditions, so took it straight back.

With the new speed limit on Windermere from next March, there will be no more Windermere speed week, according to Adam, Lake Coniston (which also has a speed limit, but presumably they are prepared to give dispensation) is going to host the speed week from '05. This will be cool, as it was Donald Campbells chosen venue for record attempts, so stooped in history.

Glad everything's OK but sorry you're missing out on Windermere. Or are you going as a spectator?

No, didn't bother in the end, I've spent too much time before in a cold wet, very wet, Windermere...never mind.

It wasn't really that bad, it was 6am after all, so no traffic, it just made me think twice about wanting a jacknifed rig, fecked boat etc on some lake district hill, then explaining to the oul bill about the trailer brakes, or lack of them.

Yeah, bit of artistic licence there with a 'new' version of the audio recording I guess

The video (especially the audio track) still gives me chills whenever I see it. very much the same way that Buhalebha's (sp) crash in 95 at Cowes does.

The Victory crash was shown a number of times on various shows. Only one that I know of has the sound track from the helicopter. To hear the boat at speed then launch and to hear the throttles cut (which is exactly what we all would do anticipating the return to the water) as the boat lifts and see the aftermath was truly horrifying. The commentary from those aboard the helicopter reflected the disbelief in what they had just seen.

When the boat was towed in the canopies were covered so the havoc wrought inside could not be seen (thankfully). These were F16 canopies on a Class II cat but they were open at the top. The idiots in the States still allow these so far as I know.

Apparently, the Victory crew had caught the wash from the Ryde ferry. The fatality occcured on the Friday - we were doing safety in our Velocity 26. Both Johnson and I were due to race on Sunday. I recall my wife saying to take it easy on Sunday. We did (but I still caught the wash from the same ferry).

You'd have probably got as far as Wolverhampton, but it might not have been wee you were smelling.

All you had to do was ask and I'd have lent you the Disco

Yeh, the boat disappeared Friday night. I remember wondering where it went and the next we saw of it was coming out of the shed either Sunday night or Monday morning.

Is powerboat racing supposed to be depressing? Matt, don't listen!!!!!!!!!
