They didn't do a very good job of painting round the sockets either. Makes it all look a bit tatty!!!

RHS plug is not UK standard 'square legged' it is Southern African standard 'Round Leg' ( Mozambique, Rodesia, Angola, Namibia, SouthAfrica, Lesotho, Swaziland )

Or it looks like Cliff Smiths Marina Plug. Two sets of sticky out bits guaranteed to zap you when you are not looking!

The R/H socket is used in hotels etc when they dont want just anyone using their electricity, smaller versions of that type are used in lighting. i.e if you want to control your table lamps from a main wall switch in pubs etc.
wasnt aware they are used in forign countries

Many years ago, before your time, (can't remember year of change) all british plugs/sockets were round pin, 2 amp, 5 amp and 15 amp being the most common.

probably from here that the colonies had the influence.

the 2 & 5 amp are the ones found used in hotel room lighting you speak of.

15 amp round pin is still the standard used for theatrical and event lighting.

PS. they were both round pin.

I decided it was safest to test if the male pins were live by sticking my tounge on them.

Nah the pic was taken back in the 60s round pin plugs all over the place then, then some 'bright spark' thought of fuses in the plug thus came the 13amp 'kill them all' unless you put the correct fuse in.....

The pic was taken yesterday by me, at the Hurlingham club, Chelsea.

One wall is permanent 'brick' or similar, the other is a room divider type temporary one made of segments suspended from the ceiling and slid into place on tracks.

I don't really know if the permanent wall socket was live or not, or what the cable & plugs were linking, but it looked good.
