Once

upon a time, a brave, intrepid, and happy mariner travelled to a land far, far awy in search of work and improvement. He had a dream which said go North to a land where they talk funny, wear kilts and have much oil.

Unfortunately he was not able to get to the far,far away land in a big silver bird or on an Iron Horse, his wife wouldn't lend him her broomstick so the only way to fulfill the dream was to travel by Pajero.

As he was preparing for the long journey in his faithfull but old Pajero his Stalwart Son took pity on him and lent him his Cupra. Which was indeed a joy to drive and came with many horses to help make the journey shorter.

Our Mariner was invigorated by this flying machine and felt many years younger, in fact in his mind he was transported back to a time before Gatso's were invented and he was a boy racer..

Whilst overtaking another vehicle on a Scottish A road he was flashed by the Gatso on the opposite side of the road, and because he was travelling with much velocity, this caused cursing and worry as he had been flashed earlier on the trip.

Does anybody know if Gatso's work both sides of the road

Simple answer - yes.

They work by measuring the wave disturbance of a microwave transmitted, and calculates the speed from the distortion. Uses a principle much like the sound a car makes approaching you then going away from you. The 'tone' changes and this change is due to the speed of the car travelling. Similar principle with the Gatso.

It uses an absolute number to calculate speed, so your 'negative speed' in relation to the direction it was travelling is converted to an 'apsolute speed' and then triggers the flash.

Next you have to consider:

1) Was there film in the camera? rougly 80% of the cameras are empty, but flash anyway.
2) Are you in the view of the camera? You see the flash ( there has to be two distict flashes ) but does the camera have you in both flashes? If you were not where the camera was setup to trap people then you are probably not making a good pcture.

Given the above, I would wait for the NITP. If the NITP does not hit your door within 14 days, you are clear. If it lands on the 15th day you write a nice note and tell them to bugger off. They will argue a bit, but they will loose the case immediately it arrives in court, so they will eventually go away. You need to stand your ground. I have a form letter if you need it.

If the NITP arrives earlies that 15 days, there are still several options, due to the setup of the camera and the usual incompetance of the plod when settng up the traps.

Occasionally, you find that plod did his work correctly, and you are stuffed, but usually you should be able to walk away without an issue.

Whilst I do not condone dangerous speeding, I do feel that a very large proportion of traps are setup in areas where they are used for revenue, not for control. They have lowered the speed limit down Gravel Hill to 30 and put in a camera, where the limit used to be 50 because of three accidents. This is unseasonable on a double carrigeway, and the justification of three accidents is not a justification at all. One of the three accidents involved a Police car exceeding the posted 50!

If you speed near a school, then you deserve to get busted.

If you speed on an open road with a stupid limit, they you need to fight it for the common good.

Q: I have been flashed by a Gatso on the opposite side of the road when driving towards it? Am I likely to be prosecuted?
A:
No. A Gatso camera can only catch vehicles travelling away from it. When there is no film in a Gatso, the trigger threshold for a flash is often lowered, and the camera may be set to also flash approaching vehicles. This is what gives rise to the phenomenon you have observed. It is important to distinguish Gatsos from Truvelo cameras, which do catch oncoming vehicles, but only emit a faint infra-red flash. Until recently, these have been very rare in the North-West, but are now becoming more common - for example, there are four on the A57 through Glossop in Derbyshire.

There are new average speed cameras on the road into Allhallows. One to remember for next season.

As it hapens I quite believe that on the whole the cameras are a good thing, so if I lose my license then at least I'm putting my money where my mouth is!

I seem to recall it was a single white flash

I've seen your driving. If you were mid overtake, I suspect you had your eyes closed so missed the 2nd flash.

Single flash indicates an empty camera setup to warn drivers of excess speed.

I would disagree with Matts source though - There have been cases of prosecutions of people caught by the Gatso whilst going the wrong direction. It is however a manual process requiring the use of the little white lines on the road to produce evidence for court.

So they've finally put the cameras up then. I saw the poles when going to Allhallows.
The first one is just before Fenn Corner isn't it? I don't recall seeing the second yet. As long as they catch some of those containers going to/coming from Thamesport. Lower Stoke is where most accidents occur, up by the level crossings.
