Does anyone know about Public Performance Licences (PPL) ? I have dismissed these requests as hoax/spam requests !! Is it real ?

Is it about music ? We had a few phone calls awhile back asking if the public could hear our workshop radio because if they could then we would have to buy a ppl. We thought it was a con at the time so never thought anymore about it.

public -
(a) forms part of the activities of an organisation that is not established or
conducted for profit; or
.

By the look of the number of premises that have paid for a license it is:

A. Not a hoax
B. Harder than quoting copyright law to get out of!

From the PRS website:

Do I need a Music Licence if I already have a PPL Licence?

PPL is the representative body for record companies and performers. PRS for Music represents composers and music publishers.
Although you may have other licences, a Music Licence is an entirely separate legal requirement to your PPL Licence. A Music Licence is required regardless of any other type of licence you may own.
PRS for Music licenses the public performance of original musical works however performed (live or otherwise) on behalf of the composers, writers and publishers of music. Entirely separate to this, PPL licenses the public performance of sound recordings on behalf of record companies and the musicians on the recording.
