Prawn Peeling?

Went down to the sea front this afternoon fancying some fresh fish......wife said the prawns looked good (all still hopping about swapping stories of great finds just outside the shoreline outfall where the council still maintain the line that the effluent has been treated) and it got me wondering after 2 hours of peeling the buggers from me car wash bucket - who peels the frozen prawns that are off the shelf? Not the best job in the world?
Also, whoever does this job must have pride in their vocation cos all he ones I had last Saturday (me anniversary) were complete, and all the ones I peeled were in fact missing a bit tucked away in the bottom of the tail....................so............who peels em?

the smaller prawns are "tailed" ie tail removed by hand and them the edable bit is blown out by compressed air

Oh thats quite funny.

The prawns you get in Tesco's/M&S etc are cooked with the shell on and then passed through a piece of equipment that consists of a number of rollers that rotate back and forth as they slide down over them. The shell is gradually peeled off by this process. They then go through a washing process to remove any stray bits of shell, through a blast freezer to freeze 'em and then through a bagging with a load cell to get the right qty for you 1kg, 2kg bags etc.

Human input is minimal, certainly no-one is removing tails by hand with compressed air or otherwise.

The things you learn on boatmad.............................
