Proud to be old?

According to todays regulators and bureaucrats, those of us who were kids in the 60's 70's & early 80'sprobably shouldnt have survived because.........

Our baby cots were covered in brightly coloured lead based paintwhich we promptly chewed and licked!

No childproof lids on medicine bottles!
When we rode our bikes we wore no helmets, just flip flops and flourecsent clickclacks on our wheels!(spokey dokeys)
As children we would ride in motor cars with no seatbelts or airbags........
We ate chips, bread and butter pudding and drank fizzy pop with sugar in butwe were never overweightbecause we were always out playing.
We shared one drink with 4 friends and nobody actually died from this!
We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back before dark. No one was able to reach us and no one minded.......
We did not have playstations or xboxes, no video games at all. no 99channels on tv, no vcr movies, no surround sound no mobile phone, no pc's, no internet chat rooms, No Boatmad!!!!! We had friends, we just went outside to find them......
We also, beleive it or not WALKED to school!we didnt relly on Mummy or daddy to drive us round the corner.
We made up games with sticks and tennis balls. we rode bikes in packs of 7 and wore our coats by only our hood!
The idea of our parents bailing us out if we got into trouble was unheard of, they actually sided with the law.
This generation has produced some of the best risk takers and problem solvers and inventors, ever! The past 50 yrs have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.
We had freedom faliure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all.
And YOU may be one of them....
For those of you who arent old enough, thought you might like to read about us!
This my freinds , is surprisingly frightening..........and it might put a smile on your face:: The majority of sttudents in universities today were born in 1983......they are called youth.
They have never heard of we are the world, we are the children, and the uptownn girl they know of is by westlife! not billy joel......

They have never heard of rick astley, bananarama, Nena or Belinda carlisle.
For them there has only been one Germany and one vietnam.
Aids has existed since they were born.
CD's have existed since they were born.
Micheal Jackson has always been white.
To them John Travolta has always been round in shape and they cant imagine how this fat guy could be a god of dance.
They beleive that Charlies Angels and mission impossible were films brought out last year.....
They can never imagine life before computers...
They'll never have pretended to be the A team or Airwolf, Red hand gang or the famous five.
They'll never have applied to go on Jim 'll fix it or Why dont you..
They cant comprehend having to watch a black and white television, let alone without a remote control!!!!
And they will never understand how we could leave the house without a mobile phone.
NOW LETS CHECK IF YOU ARE GETTING OLD(Pay attention JF!! )

1/ You understand all the above and smile..........

2/ You need to sleep more, usually till mid afternoon after a night out

3/ Your friends are getting married / already married.

4/ When you see teenagers with mobile phones you shake your head.

5/ You remembeer watching dirty den in eastenders the first time round...

Having read all this you are probably reminising over the good old days, thinking about old friends and old stories you could tell to some of your friends because you think they will smile too........

So Yes your getting older!

Very well put Gav,

The only piont I would take issue with is number 3. At my age (44) most of my friends are getting married/ or are married married for the second (or in some cases) or third time.

My brother, his mate and I used to build ramps and then jump over all the kids in our street on our BMX's. We used to get everyone to lie down next to each other in front of the ramp. Then we would mark the road where the last kid was lying. Then everyone would move and there would be a trial jump. If the trial jump was successful then everyone would lie down again and you would do the jump for real. When we got to the stage that we could easily clear everybody we would mark out child width gaps just after the ramp and then move every one further down the road. It was really my brother that was trying to break some kind of child BMX jumping record and no prizes for guessing which nobba was always at the end (furthest from the ramp) of the line.

Amazingly (and looking back I really genuinely do mean that) none of us were ever injured or killed in all this. Even more amazingly none of our parents ever came running out into the street to stop us

Spokey Dokeys were ace!!!

They should have made ones that gave off smoke!!! Hmmmmmmm but what I wonder could they have called those

Who remembers wrapping bits of cardboard round the frame and securing it with a peg so it was sticking into the spokes of the rear wheel. Thus turning your pedal bike into a pseudo motor bike

Imagine! Using pegs when parcel tape works so much better.

So I'm told . . .

Strangely enough, I saw an extra-ordinarilly tall character riding through deepest Brighton the other day, with his playing cards clattering away at the back wheel! sounded just like a Yamaha FS1E, baffles removed, flat out down the high street!...spotted him later in an Italian restaraunt chomping on Pizza.

Obviously this fad is all the rage in Sussex these days.

It was a peg and a playing card in our manor.

Hours of fun.

I asked to be driven around the Ferrari Test Track by Clay Regazzoni. Even sent it on a Ferrari Post Card.

I guess Mr Saville didn't like my idea. ........(1974)
