so why will a phantom 25 with a 300 on it only reach 74? do the steps make that much difference?

74? says who the p25 in the pic did 79.86 with a single 300x, standard gearbox, point about 4-5 inches below pad, no setback, fully rigged as a plesure boat, with a big padded bed thing up the front.
main reasion is that the 25 was designed to take twins on the back so you would need to have a well worked 4 blader prop to get the bow up,like the one in the pic.
so if it had a low water pickup, bullet level with the pad, few inches setback to help get it to run the way it was designed to with the bow up, the back decked out and no back seats, and a tricky 3 blade, small hub race prop it may have been able to touch 85 or more, who knows!
never the less, the p25 is still a 30 year old un changed design, so its not just steps which makes cougars quicker, but 30 years of testing, research, and development!
In 30 years cougar's will most likely be slow compaird to the current/modern race boats!

went out in a c*audron 25 with 300 promax,
was really choppy and handled rough really well,
but acceleration was appauling, dont know wether is was cus of the engine or because the boat was really heavy but the whole thing was built like a tank, you could walk down the foredeck and it would be solid, try and do that on a phantom and its all bendy!
i remember i felt behind the trim and the boat was like half inch thick!
its massivly over weight!
in the calm i would imagine its appauling and boring as it was reaalyy rough and just felt like nothing even wen flat out!
also the front of the foredeck is bent upwards and the bottom at the front is the same all feked,
basicly its where c*audron splashed a fuked 25 and it was all wobbly!
worst thing i found was the acceleration, after stepping out of mutz nuts the week before and getin into the C25 just felt dead and underpowered!
i would guess the hull was near on 3 times the weight of a steve baker built phantom 25, and alot wobblier too!

Hmm, was asking as there is one on boats and outboards. did want a phantom, knew the cha was a splash but thought they did ok with racing so wasnt really sure if they were bad mouthed because they are crud or because they are a splash.
Think i would prefer one with twins anyway. would like to hear peoples opinion. didn't mean to hijack the thread.
Got a ring21 at the moment with a 200HO and really need something that cuts better through the water. Got 40-60 balast up front but doesnt cut through large wake too well and undersised for channel island (guernsey) waters. need something over 75-80mph

IMO its really not worth spending out for one, there top money and there just shit, really really are just shit copys of phantoms!,
i like something that can get the adrenalin going abit and it just felt so tame!
mayb it would be o.k with another 400hp or so!
