Your better off asking these sorts of questions on a Caravaning forum as those egg heads know everything about towing!

the Kerb weight on my Mondeo is 1487kg and the max gross train weight is 3750kg according to Ford. So it can tow upto 1250kg but that would put it over the legal limit of 3500kg on vehicles without a tacho. So 900kg-ish is about my legal limit with one person driving and an empty vehicle.

Go on www.direct.gov.uk and put towing in the search bar, tells you everything you need to know

really???
did you fail GCSE maths?
think you will find that you can tow upto 2263kg's but if you are worried about the 3500kg rule then you can tow upto 2013kg which may just be enough for you plus your boat on its trailer

No, it's ok, I don't think anyone has noticed, so you've probably got away with it!

Mr Rob, as TD said no one will notice. I was just wondering if it took you 20minutes to do the calculation?

I'm sure it doesn't apply to many people but if you got your licence after 97 then you need a separate towing test - there are several 'classes' for towing different loads and lengths. I think it applies to anything more than 750kg or something like that and that includes the trailer - nothing more than a small one trailer allowed also.

For Mr Rob.... in the case of your car, I beleive that the lower limit set by the manufacturer will apply instead of the 3500kg rule, so check your car handbook as per Steve's post!

The maximum gross train weight of my car is 3750kg which exceeds the limit of 3500kg according to ford but I will double check that on my VIN plate.

Yes, but unless you're loading up the car as well, you can forget the gross train weight.... that's the car+passengers+luggage+trailer total. If I understand the rules correctly, your maximum trailer weight is the lower of two figures, either the maximum unbraked trailer rating, or the GTW minus the car+passengers+luggage. In the case of most cars used for leisure use, the manufacturer trailer rating will be the lower figure (unless you take a couple of spare engines in the boot!).
