2013 World Championships

Taken from the Ski Racing Australia website:

IWWF World Championship 2013

The IWWF Racing Council has informed Australia that the bid by the United State of America for the 2013 18th World Championship has been withdrawn.

The Council are now accepting new bids and will make a decision on location and dates as soon as possible.

After thinking for a year it was going to be America, I hope someone can step up soon and hopefully in Europe.

tenerife?

i know they've expressed an interest in the past, and apparently they seem to have a fair bit of backing.. Would make for some awesome racing as well, great swells out there, proper ski racing water!

I like Tenerife but the logistics of getting boats there would make it very difficult. We would need to take a ferry from Portsmouth to Santander, drive the whole length of Spain and then another ferry from Cadiz to Tenerife!

Cardiff and Eguzon in France have been discussed many times but they are always considered to be a little too small. If you put the Yanks and Aussies in Cardiff Bay it would not be inconceivable to find four boats on the first lap doing the best part of 120mph, side by side into the tight turn at the city end!

The race organisers at Eguzon are very keen and they do seem to have plenty of sponsors. As always it might just come down to money. I heard they are already favourites to co-host the 2014 European Championships with Vichy.

After the 2010 Europeans, the Spanish at Arcos seemed very keen to have us back so perhaps two lake races there and two offshore at Cadiz?

well thats one way of doing it yeah, but it must be possible to ship boats there in containers.. 2 to a container to share the cost and the cost must be less than 2 overnight ferries and the fuel to drive all the way through spain!

We raced in the IIIC Worlds in Cape Town and did it that way - one to a container and shipped spares and tools in there all strapped down - worked a treat!

Without wishing to get bogged down on the logistics of just one possible venue, there is no ferry that goes from the UK directly to Tenerife. The only ferry that serves Tenerife, other than the small boats that go between the Canary Islands, comes from Cadiz on mainland Spain. So, if you put your boat in a container for someone else to transport your only choice is whether they take it Dover - Calais or Portsmouth / Plymouth- Santander / Bilbao. Either way it's a lot of driving before they get the same ferry from Cadiz to Sta. Cruz de Tenerife. You might get two boats in one 40' container but I'd be interested to find out if it's much cheaper.

Personally, I think I like the idea of Vienna. Gunter's bound to want to show off the new boat he'll have by then and I've never been to Austria.

When we went to Harderwijk for the Europeans some years ago that was also discussed as a possible Worlds venue.
