Scottish ski clubs

Does anyone know if there are any Scottish clubs that support ski racing? My youngest (14yr old) fancies giving it a shot after seeing the racing down in Cardiff.

He has been on the water near enough since he could walk but has only recently got up on mono. He is getting alot of support from one of my mates who used to race (Slippo for those of you that know him) but would like to visit a club just to see how serious he is.

I have looked on the BWS site but the Scottish clubs advertised seem to support every discipline other than racing.

We live in Central Scotland so should be able to get to most areas fairly easily. Although hiking south of the border every week could work out very expensive!!!

Any contact details would be appreciated.

I think that all Scottish ski-racing died out more than ten years ago. With clubs like Hartlepool/Seaton, Chasewater and Deeside also no longer racing Hunstanton is now probably the furthest north. Scottish racing was once very strong and competitive with enough lochs to race in a different venue every weekend. At one time, there was talk of breaking away from the British Water Ski Federation (as was then) and forming their own ruling body so that they could field a Scottish team in World and European events. Slippo knows plenty of people in Hunstanton (some of which will still talk to him) and has a wealth of experience at all levels so I'm sure he could advise you. The only Scottish ski-racers I've spoken to recently have been at the Diamond race in Belgium.

Must be almost 10 years ago, the last race i remember was at Strathclyde park near Glasgow, think it was the all regions event where Barry Clapson won veterans. Wonder where all those lovely boats ended up, well i know where one is! What happened to Magic, does anyone know if CC still owns it ?

That makes Barry REALLY old! I observed in the Ladies and F4 that day and it was freezing. I wore everything I'd taken for the weekend but the Scots had shorts and t-shirts!

Hendo,

Did you used to take your boat up to Loch Earn, seem to remember seeing one boat called "Vanishing Point" up there a few years ago but not seen it for a long time.

I remember Enrico Prentice's Ring 21 with a Jonnyrude V8. He did all the nationals for some years and used to venture away from the very flat racing on the lochs. Scott Murray had a very fast Phantom 20 with a Johnson 225. I'm sure it was the same engine he put on a mod vp style Schiada tunnel hull. A very nice boat but I don't think it ever went faster than the Phantom.

Ye, have not been up to Loch Earn this year(too busy), usually put boat in at Burntisland and have a blast up to the Bridges and back , but weather has been fairly crap this year.

Prior to having "Vanishing Point", had Ring 16/ 140hp Yam called "Local Hero".

Alan,

Thought I'd seen you (or at least the boat!!) up there. Used to be another black Phantom called "Overdraft" that made the occasional appearance but not seen it for the last few years either.

To be truthful, we have been up the Loch several times this year and its not been to bad, not what you could call "warm" but at least ski-able.

PM me if you decide to head over there, see if I can pop up if I'm not working

Dave
