Avenger 16 project

Looking for more details from anybody with any history on these please

My name is keith, I am part owner of an avenger 16 my workmate steve won on ebay for £65 last year, we both work at a southampton boatyard and we are going full on into restoring this classic racing boat

After a winter of sanding by steve while I refitted my fletcher out
Its now recently been fully resprayed by Hamble Yacht painting services based in hamble who have done a fantastic job on the paintwork and even done the decks in non slip.

Originally I purchased a Mariner 60hp outboard that I have just sold on and purchased a very nice Suzuki 115hp which will be much better suited for it and have also been offered a deal by a local marine engineer to uprate it to the Suzuki 140hp as part of the major service its booked in for in May.

Once the engine is fitted its all systems go and fully refit it throughout,
we have to fit and have already purchased everything brand new, the only used parts are the engine and loom everything else is new

To add a twist to this project, steve found ANOTHER avenger 16 up north that is a little sorry for itself as it has a few holes in the bottom but has the full original interior in black including original racing dials in excellent condition, so I have now purchased this other project and will be arranging collection of this so we can make the original project completely authentic and original to its design. Its not good to destroy a piece of history but if we can make on good one from the 2 then its worth saving.

heres a couple of photos of progress so far

That video you put up was awesome.
I've always had a thing for Avengers.I think there were and are a few 16 footers on Guernsey.one used to race with a merc 80 and then a 135 merc that was called Ziggy Stardust.another one was Cor Blimey with a 125 Evinrude then a couple of inboard versions were around too.
They made a 19 foot version and a 21 too a classic design

You have done a lovely job on yours with a decent engine it should go well 140 should do it .Enjoy!

Heya bigdutch, I suppose you dont have any pics of those old boats as I have one photo of a racing one but want a better one we can recreate with all the graphics
we just stumbled across this one really steve liked bidding on nice looking hulls on ebay with an almost zero budget and he won this hull for peanuts, someone had restored it but the person we bought it from is a boat stripper that just guts them for the parts and sells them on so we had nothing with it, after finding a couple of pictures here of them and some old paperwork we piled into the project.

we had an idea for an interior that was quite minimal then this surprise turned up this week, another avenger 16 with a complete original interior even down to the aluminium dials and compass, it was listed as a fletcher and I won it for £147 plus I paid for it to be collected and delivered

Now we have everything to make the first one 100% original and complete but unfortunately have to donate a hull to do it.

The boat has been brush painted so I would guess if I sanded it down I would find its original number and name under that paint as its still has the early 70's single lever racing throttle including cables and loom for a mercury, all battery connections, the dials are all still wired in and it has the original steering wheel and cable that seems to run freely so its had a good past before the person I bought it from, the fuel tank is missing but all the brass fittings are still there

This is what arrived this afternoon

No photos but the artwork back in the day would have been four things.
1 a union Jack at the back on the side of the boat
2 a black waterline 11/2 thick following the Chine
3 a big name on the side12 inches deep
4 a black race number on a White background the sides of which would bow out to Gide the appearance the number was in brackets.
Most of the artwork back then would have been inspired from seventies album covers !
A lot of black pin striping too
There are a few on the archive photos look up Wicked Alf,Big Ed,Custard Beast to start off with

the link to one on ebay had all its original paintwork and just looking for more similar to get a real idea what to finish it with, I knew about the union jack and in the paperwork we found the colours avenger offered for the 16 all came with a choice of another 6 colours that they painted the chine with so thats already on the to do list

So we need to find a classic name like the one in this picture but on a white boat to recreate it

Also all these photos i am finding I am rehosting with tags so they can be found on google for the future

Pm me your e mail and I will try to send on some avenger photos of UK boats.
The 16 foot model was developed last of all I believe.
If you do a search on here for Avenger it will throw up a fair bit of info.

Tell you what that new one you have dust pan and brush get the leaves out then out with Son of a Gun on all the vinyl upholstery transforms it in minutes.
That's a very strong build on those boats really solid.the photos show a four cylinder 85 merc and the rest are six cylinder ones up to 140 Hp ?
The Avenger16 on top of the deck aft is original and a nice touch.
They are great sea boats and are made a bit thicker in the lay up the boats nowadays.

We use truck wash on vinyl interiors at work as it has a mild acid to remove stains so it will get the treatment soon as the crazy period is dropping off and can crack back into the boats again after work,

been chatting and we may go and reinvent the boat SIN BIN no78 as its white to match ours as the paint has already been done, we did have an original merc 1500 for this project but sold it on due to shortage of parts for them.

we will be stripping all the interior & stainless work including screen as ours had been painted, out the red one to make the white one as original as possible, I dont like doing that but if it restores one back to original condition I think the other hull is worthy, I will be fixing the holes in the other hull and then I will sell it on as a project for someone else to do

Been very busy with work so fitting in this has been difficult but we have made some progress

Now the engine is hung properly, cut all the rusty U bolts off the trailer and rebalanced the boat on the trailer now by moving the axle back about 6 inches
Sits lovely on the trailer and repositioned all the supports as the were a lttle too high so it sits nicely on her keel.

Pretty much stripped the donor hull now and got almost all the seat supports ready for fitting, got all the patterns for the original interior now so they are ready to be re-cut in some nice new 6mm ply. Just dials and handrails left on the old hull which also needs a new floor now as its just rotten through.
An intriguing coin came out of the interior liner it was a 5 peseta coin that was right inside the interior panel so that will be glued into the new boat to keep it

Had the shock of our lives this week as the price for the black fluted vinyl to match the original interior came in at over £20 per meter plus vat as its almost extinct but we may compromise with a different material that is similar

Dry fitted the windscreen from the donor and its almost ready to fit, the chrome work came up brilliant with some elbow grease and a valeter has offered to restore the perspex and remove all the cloudyness in it as its now over 40 years old

this week has been busy as we refit the original avenger toe rail after a good polish and clean up and then fit the rubber insert back after a treatment to make it look like new again

once fitted we will be piling into the interior work while Malcom Green in southampton works his magic and recreates the original cushions and back rest inside the boat to match

heres a couple of update photos

well dusted the boat off again and determined to finish this very soon as its been a year of storage in a shed without touching it

we have cut the side panels ready for installation and primed them before fitting the almost identical to original vinyl interior, someone donated a roll of white headliner so thats has been installed as the back to the side pockets and with some nice LED lighting hidden away they should light up at night nicely

the genuine avenger rubbing strake is fitted all round tht we managed to find

the replacement screen from the wrecker we bought for spares is fitted

the base for the rear seat is fitted and glassed in

The floor has glassed over and primered ready for carpeting

next job is to glass the blocks in for the side panels to mount to and then fit the carpet, then we will start the full wiring and its not too far from completion then.

This project is now back on after a long break sat in a boatyard

currently major servicing engine,
the interior is in being sorted and due back next week ready to final fit

all electrics were fitted last week ready to test

Most of the parts to finish have arrived so work will commence tomorrow with installing a lot of parts and getting engine ready to fire and run up

Designs for the original sponsor logos and race numbers are being sorted this weekend and due next week to fit

The spray rail will be painted in original style to match

hopefully launching in july for a bit of fun and then hopefully entering the royal southern classics in september as her first outing as the royal southern are looking for classic powerboats to enter alongside the yachts
