Well after last years racing, the big 50th, and now this years start. People like me and Littlenige who have been following Cowes for the last 36 years or so, this is a killer blow for us onshore enthusiasts.

Summed up in a couple off posts here.

Catweazle showing his passion for the history of the race and its start,I appluad.
Martin putting across the reasons why it can not, I applaud. But was interesting that he quotes 'some 'voices' within "officialdom" deemed it better to "play safe" '.
Then Ciao , we must move on , and by the way we have 3 sponsors for our evening functions!!

Move over everyone, the general viewing public are of no importance in the successful running of our weekend of racing.

ps Did anyone see the start of this years Round the Island Race, lost count how many crashes at the start, one rule for one, another rule for the others I think!!!

We all sympathise & comiserate with each other, but however hard it is, Be Positive !
We still have a Cowes-Torquay-Cowes Race !
We also have a Race to Poole & Back.
While we cannot see the start, we can see the race-boats in CYH, & off The RYS as they depart.
(A lot of offshore races of old were out of view of the shorebound public).
Thge reason this race was always a public spectacle was that in its original form, Sir Max Aitken, made it a public spectacle to aid The Daily Express sales in the places the race visited, like Southsea, Bournemouth, as well as Cowes & Torquay.
If you remember R.Sn.Y.C. races in the early-mid 1960's, they were started from a committee boat between HillHead & Ryde, & finished in a similar pos'n. off Netley-Abbey. No spectator facilities there !
Admitedley, Much later on, a spectator boat was arranged, from Hamble.
Similarly, other races were not particularly spectator friendly, unless you got afloat.
RMYC Races were OK if seen from B/mouth Pier, but nowhere near the amount of facilities the CTC had.

In these grim economic times, we are lucky to have this years race, lets hope its a good one, & one last thought - Back in the early 80's & on other occasions, there were far fewer than 18 boats in the CTC race !

I'd be interested to know who the "voices in officialdom" are.

It is a great shame and i agree there is it seems a bias against us,but you must remember we are largely polluting, anti social, non green, stinkboats.
I believe all has been done to no avail and fear that is as far as it can go.
Ciao and others need to concentrate on the job in hand and its a shame the hours spent on it have been wasted.
These problems extend into all leisure activities now.
In the field of classic vehicles ,the classic comercial vehicle run to Brighton is blighted with the London emission zone,
any vehicle post 1973 has to start from Hooley not Chrystal palace.
Many of the shows i visit have no movement of vehicles unless a marshall walks in front .
We now need one million pound indemnity to take a vehicle to a show for the benefit of the viewing public ,
this of course costs us,there is no longer petrol money,or even a free cup of tea.
We now have our own private meets and road runs to places of interest which of course means the general public have no access and we in turn dont meet the old boys who owned them and benefit from there stories.
it gives me the raving ache to think of the amount of cash that Cowes
benefits from a race that doesnt even start there.
I keep saying it but i am gratefull we had the past because i think we had the best of it,those that disagree arnt old enough to know what they missed.
i am talking about freedoms here.
Yourself and littlenige are welcome to join me afloat at Cowes on any forays we make. You will need to supply a L.jacket or take your chances its a choice you still have
Maybe a gas mask we make a bit of smoke
Old ,miserable, and enjoying every minute of it

With respect Martin, why? These are "voices" that are seemingly working against powerboating and it is always advantageous to be able to identify those who would harm one's interest.

Classic Boats in CTC or CPC Races

To try to return this thread to its original purpose, while we have reached the official entry cut off for the races, BPRC will of course, still accept entries for boats to race.
There is only one Historic (Classic) boat enterred, so how about one or two more entries from able classic race boats, maybe to try the CPC (Cowes/Poole/Cowes) Race ?
It would be good to see a Huntsman or two cross the line - how about it ?

I am sure you'll enjoy seeing a Huntsman or two cross the line as the Classic Rally fleet will be putting in an appearance or two around the Solent.

I'd suggest an entry to Ben but I don't think he'll be wanting to take on a 950hp Velocity with 290 of Perkins finest horses...

Many thanks Catweazle for your kind offer, will speak nearer the time if Im around to watch this year, lost the cause,it will be my first absentee from the event in 36 years watching!

It still anouys me that nothing was even put out on the local Isle of Wight media outlets asking for help to ensure the start happens at Cowes!!
Did they also ask P1 management to help them out?
Were only looking to man the shoot shorly!!Not the whole of the Solent, maybe the mark of Fort Victoria.

Without being unkind to Mr Noisy, given sufficient time, the Huntsman may be more likely to finish, based on past records !
Sorry Alan & Mike !

I suspect 'he who shall not be named' is one the many killjoys that inhabit a strange rarefied world that few of us are (thankfully) part of. Their sort have absolutely no problem ruining an event, in many case's causing the demise of the event itself. They are not ever sorry & just move on to spoil someone else's fun.

Rant over, back on topic folks.

We've now got 16 entries confirmed, 4 more Fairey boats, 2 wood and 2 GRP.

There are a few more expected and I know that there are quite a few people working flat out to get boats ready.

If you are one of those burning the midnight oil then do give me or Paul a call, numbers are on the website or drop us an email to let us know and we'll make sure we're ready for you. If you dont get the boats ready in time and wish to buy tickets and come to the Sunday Dinner then we'd love to see you.

Its all getting very exciting!
