What Ever Happened to………
Sadly I have lost all my old photos from the 1980s but found some old notes from GPA race season from 1981 and I got me thinking what ever happened to the boats and the people from over 30 years ago? My first ever offshore race was the Round Guernsey in 1981 and here is the entry list mostly from memory with apologies for errors, spelling mistakes and omissions!!
I think the race was won overall by Chris and Roly in the original Professional

?? Twins crew Mike and Pat Lindley
Hi to anybody who was there and hope that you are still out there-I miss going for a pint at the Mermaid in Herm and racing back in the dark blissfully ignorant of where all the rocks were!
It would also be great to see any old photos from the GPA races in the early 1980s- particularly of the old Cougar Bosscat / Catch it! in 81, 82 & 83 and any of Art's cats built between 1982 and 1987
1982 Valentinos Shytot 16' with Yam 85 for Pete Wislon
1983 Valentino's Shytot 19' with Yam 140 Pete Wilson
1983 The Specialist 20' with EVinrude 235 for Graham Scott

What can I say Simon- I promise not to do it again!!!
Hope life is treating you well-
I certainly miss those days, in my opinion the GPA back then (early '80s) struck a real good balance - affordable racing- fantastic location and different sea conditions- plenty of races (especially if you count Jersey as well) and some pretty decent boats and when the boys went to the mainland normally aquitted themselves rather well.
We had good fun developing our cats and getting plenty of stick from you lot.
Sadly the last time I was in Guernsey was too long ago, back during the Summer of 1993 but true to form driving a big cat (Condor 10)
I also vaguely remember copiuous quantities of Grolsch, Orangeboum, Pony, VB etc....

Hi Martyn,
I remember racing against your old boat driven by Dave Trotter (and Steve Lajoie? ) Would have been ‘82 or ‘83.
Jason Hunt was also there in class 5 with Sigma (I think an 18’ SBM with Merc 150 or XR2?)
I remember an excellent Havelet race where Magician and Sigma would out accelerate us , but slowly we would overtake on the straights (especially into wind) and lead into the turn only to get passed again round the buoys , the lead changed place twice every lap, until Magician beat us on the final turn into the wall.
In that season we were running a 2 litre V6 merc 175 (crankshaft HP) and turning a mach-3 26” cleaver at 6000 RPM- the old Cougar weighed about 1 ton on the start line with full fuel so we were good for about 57 MPH down wind.
However into wind the boat never stopped accelerating the revs and the speed just kept inching up until we slowly passed the much lighter Ring 18 which must have had a top end in the mid 60s in racing trim?
Its great to know the old Magician is still around – do you still race her and what engine do you use?
Cheers Guy

I'm not racing that one anymore, it's a bit tired now and sat up my yard needing some time to be spent on it. I was running a late 200 xr2 when I raced it, went like stink! I'm now go a ring 21a formerly known as dye valkery, used to have twin 130s. It's a magician now running single 260efi.
love the old boats, seem to go into corners better than all these newer hulls

Hi Guy, those were the days, sadly some of our racers are no longer with us but there seems to be a good input of new blood recently.
I do remember giving Art a few drawings where I had put Spitfire aircraft cockpits onto racing cats, wish I had patented it now as this was years before it was done.
Be great to meet up if you get over here again
All the best
Steve

Thanks Steve,
I live in Argentina but I am working on a project in Gibraltar at the moment– I must try to get back to visit the island soon its been too long- I hope it hasn’t changed too much! Id love to see your cougar 25 on the water. I left Guernsey before Andrew Chambers ?? raced it.
Your drawings and predictions of canopies on a Webster Marine cat was in fact realized in the mid 1990s in the UAE, firstly I re-built a 6 litre class 28’ Wright-Campbell cat and fitted an F16 canopy and restraint system . (I was the only person the owner could find who would tackle that project on a wooden cat)
I drove the boat in June 1995 in Abu Dhabi and won the Continental Kilo run championship beating, the Finnish “120 MPH” hydrolifts and Victory marine cats by over 8 MPH our top measured speed was 98.6 MPH in full racing trim and full tanks with 2 EFI 2,5s on the back.
I also built a 32’ 6 litre cat which was tested by me but I don’t believe my Arab client ever raced it- It was also fitted with F 16 canopy and a pair of 2,4 carb Mercuries that didn’t do the boat justice.
I will post some photos of both boats next week when I arrive back home.
I am going to start building a new boat this year for myself- probably a nice light weight 20 ‘ cat designed around the Suxuki 140 DF- something to upset the Frigidaire owners in Buenos Aires (Argentine copy of a Skater 21 usually with 225 V6 power down here)
Sadly Art is no longer with us- this year is the 50th anniversary of his first race boat an entry in the 1962 Cowes- Torquay- This is one reason I want to recreate something in the style of his Guernsey built boats- I don’t have a single photo of any of them apart from the Round Britain boat and I don’t expect any of them survived.
All the best Guy

Hi Guy,
That was a great result to beat the likes of the Hydrolift boats, cant wait to see the pictures.
Good luck with the new boat, keep us all informed how it goes.

Yes that's exactly right Team Fletcher race boats built for 85hp outboards. There were two brand new yellow ones and one White .
I think Pete W had one Derek the other both Yamaha and maybe Jon T the other White one with Suzuki that became Corkscrew as raced by Ken Scrimshaw.
I think the Suzuki had a bit more torque and used to swing a 26 inch QSS !
Then Mr Ring introduced the stepped 16ft Ring and Jon T had Ring Splitter and Barry C Total Confusion that hull was a little quicker then the Fletcher
