Mystery Tremlett

You`ve dug up a mystery one there,Adam. The position of of the chine and spray rails doesn`t tie up with the boats that raced ie. Mordicus,Island Hopper,Venus or Tremor,in the larger classes, and 1964 is earlier than I have found for racing Tremletts, assuming it was an ex-racer.I have no doubt the guy who built it will reveal all if this thread catches his eye. That gunwale piece at the transom looks a real work of art?

Tremlett

She is Island Hopper, the only one fitted with Volvo 's cabin added later check the photo Graham chine rails identical although there are additions on top of hull strengthening? or hiding rot?
other boat was Mordicus with 2 ASTON's.
instead of routing out any rot she has been filled very dodgy...
a lot of work to do.

Round 2

I thought it was Island Hopper before I compared the photos. That chine has suddenly gone upwards and aft if it is,forgetting it`s recorded as 29ft and raced in 1966,but then I tend to ignore the sellers screed.Allowing for the angle it`s been photographed it just does not seem compatable.Nah! I need more convincing.Give it time, and the exmouth locals will throw their hats into the ring.

Hopper

Graham
it looks as though it has been butcherd at some time chine rail definately changed and that awful capping at deck level is hiding something but the spray rails are right and the ad says 26ft first time.

Was originally Offshore Powerboats not Tremlett.

The chines and especially the upper Spray Rail looks more akin to Polly Perkins than any of the others.

More Confusion

I always thought Crescendo became Firecracker, because if it did ,look at the chine position. It has the two Tremlett type locations at gunwale. Was that modified a la Island Hopper? The odd thing is ,all the `Tremlett` boats that are credited with a different builder i.e. Offshore Powerboats,Stapley, have the chine located almost at bow, which makes Island Hopper even more confusing as it was an Offshore Powerboat build, short of moving it.There again both Crescendo and Firecracker are listed as Tremlett.Ummmm!

Was it not that ALL the hulls were cold moulded at Odhams Wharf at Topsham and a number were decked and finished by other individuals/company's

Tremlett hull versions

Digging deeper.I`m not so sure Firecracker was ex-Crescendo,which would explain those chine positions.Other than Crescendo I wonder why that chine was farther forward on the other builders boats.Even Seafury with Stapley part credited was different to a Tremlett chine location. To change chine position would involve a lot of mod work to get the topside line fair.Hacking frames etc and adding meat to them.I can`t see it.If anything ,what makes sense is that the bottom lines were Tremlett and Offshore Powerboats did their own topside lines, and that the `Mystery Tremlett` is a pucker Tremlett and not an Offshore Powerboat build, and a production,non-racer to boot.
Bring on the boatbuilder who built it please.

Miss Supercavitation had a 34 ft fibreglass Tremlett built deck on a Nat Barkwill built cold moulded cedar veneer hull.

Tremlett

Just seen the picture of Firecracker. I can confirm it's a tremlett, I was only talking to the owner two months ago! It's up and running and is in the same colours as Flying Fish's picture. Currently dry stored on a trailer.

Firecracker

It would be interesting to know if Firecracker was Crescendo modified, but I have my doubts. Can`t see the pattern of Crescendo having that chine right forward, yet still referred to as a tremlett, whereas the others i.e.Island Hopper etc came from the Offshore Powerboat stable, unless of course Crescendo was an Offshore Powerboat with a Tremlett bottom.Be handy if your man `Blue Mist`,could clarify.Digging into the builders history throws up all sorts of odd info every time.

Opl

Came across this in 1965 MB&Y.

Cowes - Torquay edition - entry list makes a pretty interesting list too.

The OPL boat in advert is listed as Mordicus, 24' long, twin Aston Martins for 650 hp

Mordicus was in fact 29 foot long, the early CT specs were waterline length. She was built by Chris Tremlett at Odham's Wharf on the River Clyst. According To Mark Tremlett Chris always reckoned that Mordicus was his finest looking creation.
Offshore Powerboats Limited was a marketing organisation set up by David Lees from his house on the Strand here in Topsham.

Another Tremlett - that was around for some years. Wonder where that fits in with the other boats?

Anything Goes Thuz

From the files Adam,I think this was a one off.I can never understand why the boatbuilders log of what job numbers against which boat never comes to light in these situations. It must exist surely, then the true history can be resolved. This raised it`s head some time ago with the Phantom boats but that fell off the table, and no more has been heard.
I am constantly in awe of `Olli` and the pics he posts.Always ones that are new to me,and I`ve got a few.Keep it going `Olli`.

Anything Goes Thuz was built for my parents Richard & Sue Griffith for the London to Montecarlo race in 1972. It had two Perkins T6354 diesels and should have had surface drives fitted but Chris Tremlett went over budget so standard shaft drive was used. The screen was replaced with a painted wood deflector after several smashed screens. The boat was sold and ended up in the Gulf I understand. The next time they raced was in the 1984 Round Britain in Everest Forever a Sunseeker XPS 34 with Volvo petrols.
