the last few years I'm gathering info for building an accurate scale model of the cigarette 36 offshore race boat from the 70's.
I have a lot of pictures and books. Also a scale model hull and line plans.
Also I know these 36 hulls were stretched from Don Aronow's famous 32 Cary The Cigarette. From that boat I have the hull which can now be bought from the Horba site but was available in the past from SHG mouldings.
On the OSO forum I've found posts stating that the 36 hull was 9 feet and 6 inches wide and someone else says 9 feet and 3 inches.
Also somewhere can be found that these hulls were 2,9 meters wide which is the same as 9 feet and 6 inches.
Total lenght of these boats is 36 foot = 10,98 meters.
If later 36 hulls were wide bodies can the first 36 hulls be called "narrow"?
Does anybody know which 36 racing hulls were wide bodies and which are normal width bodies?
Are these all wide bodies? Or are ALL 36 cigarette racing boats wide bodies (KAM, Black Tornado, Copper Kettle, ERAF, FINO, Dry Martini, Lady Nara, Blonde, Dante's Inferno etc.)

36` Cigarette Wide Body
Borit, you have an interesting Avatar. What is your connection with the Magnum Donzi No 4 Magnum Tornado ?
To my knowledge all Cigarette 36`s are called wide body due to the beam as opposed to the later 35`s with the square Top Side which reduced the beam.
True or not I was told at that time that the reduction in the beam was because of a change in US towing laws. However I also believe that the beam reduction also reduced the windage and bow lift plus reduce weight.
Brownie on OSO will have the full story he knows these boats inside out having worked with and for Don Aronow for many years.
Please don`t forget about the Avatar and why you are using it, I just might have a story for you in that respect.

I do like the classic glass offshore deep V hulls. Especially the early Don Aronow boats (Cary 32, Cigarette 36).
One day I hope to buy a classic Formula 233 or Chris Craft 23 Lancer for leisure driving and waterskiing with my family. My wife and I have 3 small sons and also right now I'm very busy with my job.
For now my boating hobby consists of searching the www for pictures and info and buying books, photo's and other parafernalia. In this way I have collected a lot of stuff already. Also I'm busy building scale model boats. See the pics!
This avatar is a nice drawing I have in a childrens book on boats I'm reading for my sons when the go to bed. White tornado is one of my favourite racing boats of this era. Building a scale model of this too. It has v-drives instead of the speedmaster z-drives on the Ciagertte 36's.
V drives are easier to use in a scale model. But in 1/12 scale I do have fully working z-drives.

The boat in your Avatar is as you know is "Magnum Tornado" which I owned from November 1968 through to 1975. It is an interesting story which we saved as a scrap book and have now scanned. I could send a copy to you if you would like to see it.
Some 40 yrs. later I bought the one and only 27` Sport version of the original Vee drive race boat here in the UK. The 27 sport is the same hull as the inboard
28 but the Topside was cut down at the factory by 4" which then reduced the overall hull length by some 6",
This boat was built in 1971 and in need of a full refit.I have been working on this project most weekends for the past 3 Yrs. and hope to have it ready to run later this year,
Your models look great. I would be very keen to see the finished product of "Magnum Tornado" so please do post some pictures when you are ready.
