Pacesetter

Pacesetter was/is a 42ft gas turbine race boat built by british hovercraft for BP back in 1979

I owned the hull for a long time....

couldnt do the re-engine for this and that reason over the years so sold (gave away almnost) to some character who was going to refit a turbine and get her back in the water...

there were a few provisos in the sale if he didnt...

and as far as I Know he hasnt which means I excercize the proviso to buy back the hull for what he paid...

he hasnt fulfilled his part of the deal so now I want it back....but I have to find the soanso

lots of comment on whether or not she was any good...but she had a lot of potential

and the bottom line is......

she cant take part in Coniston speed week becuae only boats attempting a record run can exceed 10mph....and for Witch to participate she would have to try for a record and for that she would now need a saftey cell/capsule

she isnt designed for it and fitting one would cut her up badly I think

she could exceed the national record she still holds but at what cost to her looks to incorporate a cell or capsule

pity really.....as the alternative is either I use her as a fun 'speed boat' on open sea water and not do what she was built for on fresh.... or keep her as a dry display

Im dissapointed there are no fresh water venues left for such a craft

nanny england and the 'quiet lakes' pundits have killed our occasional need for speed

Im going to ship her abroad....goodbye england....small e intentional

yea i got her

but not on the water yet....simply havent had the time to do it with working away

shes is certainly a fine vessel considering she is completely untouched as far as never having had any new paint...she looks three years old let alone 30

started the motor after it hadnt turned for over a year...on the button!... all i can say is WOW!....tried to record it on my android phone but it just blew the microphone away....so will post some sounds in a while.....just awesome sound through the webber induction and the headers

for a while I was stupidly thinking she was a 350 chevy motor....but then it dawned on me that it couldnt be as this was an E5000 homologated boat.... so 300 cubic inch 5ltr....not 5.7 ltr 350 cubic inch

meaning it is an original chevy DZ engine as fitted to the Z28

shorter stroke and higher revving out of the box....rare block

Can only say it is a credit to its designer, builder and owner of 30yrs

Only issue is the water pump which sprayed out while running so it will need a rebuild before i can get her afloat

I pinch myself every time when i think what i paid for her....im truly (though not often) lucky

What cooling system does the engine use ?
A sealed system, or "raw" ?
Only ask as I note exhausts were 'dry' !

I had it started without water connected simply to turn it over for a minute ....but its a raw water system and I took out the pump vane to avoid running it dry

Cooling water from chine intake to camshaft driven vane pump > exhaust headers > engine > and finally out through transom pipes.....exhausts are dry

Witch of Endor - still not wet yet but part painted

Still don't think I will get her in the water this year but at least she will have a new old look about her....the old paint wasn't bad for near 30 years old but I wasn't happy with it and decided to modernise the colours a bit while keeping to the original look

I went with a sprayed base/clear automotive pearl finish which considering I didn't do this in a puka spray booth it came out quite well.....hope it will be near mirror perfect when I wet sand the specs down and buff the clear (have to get on board wearing socks)

then its time for the sign writers to hand paint all the art work and logos back on as per original finish.....Vinyl stickers just wouldn't do
