You did a good job on laminating that boat.

Good Idea to round of the bottom of the transom!

Any idea of the weight of this boat?

Is that full balsa core on the hull?

Not full balsa - it's foam except where there are compression requirements, ie the Knees are sat on balsa and there is also balsa on the pad area and the chine.

This is the first boat we have built to the new side impact regulations - it took a while to get agreement on how to interpret the rules (they were promised in December but I still haven't had anything official). The boat has extra matt and some uni directional tape on the gunnel, the ply reinforcement under the deck also has an extra layer of 600X300 woven roving as does the side of the boat.

The boat as pictured weighs just over 300kgs and should be bullet proof!

Is that a Shark or a Baker build schedule?

I think he means leaving a semi circle at the bottom of the transom inside.

Tony/Larby - It's a Shark build with foam longits.

Larby the Baker layup boats have wooden longits and a floor, it has shown that changing to this layup and moving the knees the boat is stiffer and more responsive according to customers who have driven both.

Neal - Have a look at the Phantom website and if you have any questions the contact details are on there - I'm happy to answer any technical questions you have - cookee@bananasharkracing.com

Looks real nice cookee, what are the orange dots on the seat base? Is there a mounting plate bonded in there?

The side impact protection requirements are that the crew sit as low as possible and the only way to achieve that is to make inserts in the seat base for the outboard mounts, the seat is bolted through the base into tapped aluminium inserts - the stickers are to protect the unused holes. the crew of this boat could only sit lower if we put a bulge in the bottom of the hull!

Figured it was something like that alright.

So what exactly are the side impact requirements, as Im about to start building our new OCR boat. Does the whole side of the boat have an extra 300/600 or just the crew area?

Not in any rush anyway Tony, at this rate I probably wont get around to building the boat for another month or so anyway! But would be nice to know so I can plan the build around it.
