Batboat Identification

Hi Guys.

Would any of you know what type of Boat this is? I'm sure its not an Ocke Mannerfelt design as the first (bowside) step is not vented. also the lifting strakes/chines do not continue to the bow like the ocke mannerfelt and this deck seems flatter.

Any one knows how this compares to the B23 by mannerfelt in the rough and flat water?

It's an Adam Younger design.

Boat was taken out to Malta a few years back.

Here is a snap with my son in the back about to go out for a spin in it - 2010.

Paul Howes sold the boat to a friend of mine who is rigging it with a Gen 2 200XS to race abroad.

I drove this boat and its incredible in the rough weather even with a heavy Mercury 225 EFI (3.0L) 20" at the back, let alone with the lighter and shorter 200XS

I just wonder how this boat compares to the Ocke Mannerfelt B23.

Hope your friend has a lot of fun and success with the boat. If there is anything I can help with - or just more background information e-mail me at adam@adamyoungerdesign.com

The original boat was built as a one-off by my team and myself to a design of mine. The boat was quite a test bed for ideas and development - went to new owners in Bob Lewthwaite and then Will/ Iain Nurse.

It was then sold to Paul in Malta and with my blessing it was used as the basis for new moulds. One boat was built as far as I know, which was much lighter than the original. It looks like this the boat your friend bought.

I would be the first to admit in terms of top speed in calm water the Mannerfelt's are quicker. But we designed/ built this boat to win in real conditions and rougher water. So very proud to say the design has had a lot of success with the original boat twice winning the UK 3C National Championships, UKOBA Championships etc - beating many Mannerfelts in the process.

There is still more development left in the boat and be really interesting to see how far the speed can be pushed up - with the lighter build and more powerful XS200.

Be good to know what has happened to the original boat (in my avatar photo) - would quite like to buy it back one day!

Scottyboy.

The newer (lighter) one was rigged with a 200hp carb Mercury and use to run at about 75 - 76mph. We never tested much for top speed. A day before the race the engine shat itself and a mate lent us the 225 EFI. We bolted it on, ran the boat for a quick test drive. Best speed we saw (no real testing) was around 80mph.

The next day we went to race. Sea was very rough about 5 ft north easterly waves which came directly into the bay. This boat annihilated the competition but unfortunately in the end of the first lap, the hydraulic jackplate let go and the engine flipped 360 degrees into the water. No one got hurt and all was fine.

Now it is going to be rigged with a 200 XS. When running with the 200hp Evinrude, it use to weigh about 850kg dry (plus or minus 10 kilos)

She was also rigged with a Mercury 250 XS and ran about 85mph.

However, this boat feels much happier with a 2.5l instead of a 3.0l. And now probably going from a 20" to a 15" motor will help a lot too.

The older model is owned by the same person who has the new one. He claims that the lighter one is not much faster top end at all compared to the older one.

How much does the original model (heavier one) weigh approximately?

Thanks.

Yes I took part in that race too. I was in the 225hp class. The guy who was first in your race in the 20ft Speedcraft with a Merc 200hp had retired as his flywheel came loose. He is now the owner of both these Adam Young Bat boats. We are waiting for some rigging parts to arrive from the USA then we bolt on the 200XS!

Then bring on them waves!

When originally ran her she was around 875 / 900 kg with an XR2. But she did get heavier as I modified her - also extended the bow tank. So probably was weighing in at more like 940kg in the end. But I think some weight could have been saved as well.

Speedwise - best I saw was 74 mph - but is was not the best of the XR2's.

Then the final round of mods I made (for the Nurses) perhaps saw more potential and quite a bit of difference to the balance. Certainly much more stern lift and that bigger bow tank was not really necessary.

Actually be nice to have it back and carry on the development!

Hi guys.

Just a slight question off topic. Does the V24 have the same hull as the B23 or is it longer? On the website, I found that the V24 is 26 ft length over all while the B23 is a tad longer then 23ft. Does the extra 3 feet come from the tail of the V24 or is the hull actually longer?

If you're going to run a lifter use a Stainless Marine one, anything else will break.

The stainless ones are obviously very good - but certainly would'nt say every thing else would break.

I have used Bob's Machine Shop lifters with really good results. Ran on on the Mobil 1 boat and no problems. But a lot is also in the installation and maintenance as well. Since then the Bob's ones have been up-graded too - as engines have generally got heavier.

We ended up buying the Extreme series hydraulic jackplate which has a double thick cylinder and much thicker material all round.

Its from the tail, they have the same running surface.

Let me put it another way - I really believe that Stainless Marine lifters will outlast everything else, fewer parts and very little to go wrong, the sliders are disposable and so long as you replace them before there is any real play they last. We tried the others but our hull was very hard on equipment.

Yes this stainless marine ones are very robust. But the boat is not mine and was for the owner to decide. I personally wanted the Detwiler ones. They look very heavy duty units. And their ExZact system is great for racing. Especially when coming to lower the motors in corners.

What theory are you goin on that the 15" mid will be quicker than the 20"?

When it comes to boat choice and people ask what is better its a difficult question to answer really.
Each boat is better in different conditions. You may want a heavy boat which will always get round and finish and prob be better in real rough conditions or you may have a boat that is short and light and better on tight twisty courses. Ya pays ya money and takes ya pick at the end of the day. Depends where your gonna race it and how you like to run ya boat aswell. Mannerfelt's hull design has won more world/national championships than any I know of. But it has its disadvantages aswell.
Each boat will always have its day through a season!
