Clive Curtis

I am sure all the powerboating world will join me in remembering the one and only Clive Curtis who has left this mortal world, leaving behind a vast treasure trove of powerboating memories.

Our sincerest condolances to wife Anne, to Steve and all the Curtis family in their sad loss.

Mike

That's very sad indeed!
Clive was a great character and I was always surprised how he would take the time to talk to anyone who was in need of help or advice & showed a genuine interest in what others were doing. A man who was very generous with his time & knowledge. Astonishing from one of the partners who founded a company that had dominated and ruled the powerboat racing world, globally, as Cougar had for many years.
RIP CC.

My thoughts precisely. Rest in peace.

I was lucky enough to attend a presentation a few years back with TD, Pascoe and few others at the Royal Southern YC by Clive & Steve, speaking about Cougar and the Curtis's lives in boat building & racing, their time in the US etc, etc. It was excellent, and I always thought Clive should write a book about it, the stories of the dodgy US racers, their suspect occupations and the like was riveting stuff.

Funny aint it, 40 years ago he and Balestrieri would have been crossing paths & rubbing shoulders all over the place within class one racing, and here they are all these years on, passing away within a few hours of each other.

When in July 1977 in Viareggio at the dock before the race I saw him Yellowdrama that he built could not believe my eyes.
After witnessing the failures on Italian offshore cats thought that the story was over.
That day the sea in Viareggio was very rough to the point that for the first time in the history of the race the course was shortened, but Yellowdrama rest on the dock because the day before its driver, Ken Cassir, was injured slipping.

Just over a month later I heard the news that the yellow and gray cat with clean lines and elegant had triumphed at the CTC.

He had opened a new era in the offshore, beating the mono when the waters were still offshore.

Condolences to Steve and his family.

Marco

Long story to that one. John Baker was a great friend of mine and has also passed away so I am not going to stir any ashes that still glow but Cougar took the boat back and eventually - I understand - cut the top off and turned it into a RIB. That was a great boat and a Class 11 winner. However, this is a thread to the memory of a great man Clive Curtis so lets remember him and the good times we all spent with him!

A very sad week for the sport, following the earlier news from Italy about Vincenzo Balestrieri

I believe others on here are more qualified to comment on the man himself, but for me, his biggest legacy has been the amazing Cougar catamarans particularly of the 1970s and 1980s.

The catamarans of Clive Curtis and James Beard lierally changed the face of the sport and were a real quantum leap in race boat design.

Admittedly, not the first offshore catamarans, but certainly the first successful ones across all offshore classes with many milestones including; Volare 2 , Aristocat, Wiggins Teape, Yellowdrama 3, and Toleman Group.

Design features of these and other early Cougar cats have arguably had an influence on the design of offshore catamarans ever since.

The first boat that I raced was a 21’ wooden Cougar built in 1972, a very forgiving boat to drive especially in the rough and with incredible build quality. “Quality furniture with lightening holes” as was once described.

Apart from giving us the legacy of Cougar catamarans, let’s not forget that he was involved in the setting up of (and then won) the first Putney Calais race -possibly the birth of Cass 3 racing- and also won the 1969 Cowes Torquay Cowes alongside another giant of the sport Don Aronow in “The Cigarette” these were serious events in the sport's history.

I share with sentiments of previous posts in offering my condolences to his family, but would also like to say a big Thank You for giving us Cougar Marine and those amazing cats that meant offshore powerboat racing would never be the same again.

RIP

Cougar certainly have made a massive contribution to the sport. And Guy you are right there were so many beforehand - maybe it was only a matter of time before the designers got it right and beat all of the monos but I'm glad it was Cougar who broke the mould - legends!
