Clocked this over on Boatfreaks
Posted July 2006.
"Say this for Leon Derebery, founder and namesake of Derebery Performance: He doesn't lack for guts and ambition. The Pottsboro, Texas, engine builder's latest project, which he plans to start testing on Lake Texoma sometime this month, is a full-canopied **Skater 40 catamaran** with a pair of 3,000-horsepower, twin-turbocharged engines running on ethanol. His plan? To set a kilo record the next time Reggie Fountain hosts such an event at his Fountain Powerboats facility in Washington, NC. "we think it will run 240 mph," he says. Extreme as the undertaking sounds, you wouldnt necessarily want to bet against him."
Yoiks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Is he MAD???????????

Maybe he has a deathwish??!! Mind you, I did suggest elsewhere on another thread that I believe that the World water Speed record could ultimately be broken by a ´relatively´ straightforward catamaran design. Of course I know nothing of aerodynamics and all that, but most WWS record craft always seem way too complicated to my mind. That´s my tuppence worth! (armchair racer).

After record week on Coniston last year I read a letter in the local paper from some greeny whinger complaining about the event but also about the fact that someone was planning an attempt on the WWS on the lake. I doubt said greeny was particularly well informed, but is anyone planning a go at it?

Yeh. Nigel Macknight, Quicksilver WSR.
http://www.quicksilver-wsr.co.uk/
I've got little doubt Ken Warby, and his son, will both break the record on Ken's new boat.
I'm very interested to see how Quicksilver turns out - Ken Warby is pretty critical of it, and he's a man who knows, but Ken Norris (principal designer of thrust SSC, Campbell's Bluebird and others) had input into quicksilver, and Ken (Norris. Too many Ken's!!) is a man who I have an awful lot of respect for. He wouldn't have put his name to it if he didn't believe in it. I feel it's an outsider, but might be worth placing a bet on if they ever get it built. Not sure on the choice of Coniston though - it's pretty short.
I (humbly) don't think the American WSR boat will cut the mustard.

Cheers for that.
That'll be worth a few days off work for a watch.
Coniston is a bit short, but apparently has one of the longest straight and unobstructed sections of water in the country - inland obviously. Even so, I imagine it feels pretty small at 300 plus mph!

Wow! That interactive model is a bit smart. I like the way you can see the underside of the design using the mouse! Neat!

I spent a while chatting to Ken Warby in Key West - he is a very nice guy and very aproachable. He gave me the distinct impression he wasn't going to raise the stakes at all - rather just wait and see if anyone managed to break the record and then go out and beat that!

If there is anyone in this country who would have the b...s to do it I would have thought that Steve Curtis would. With his name experience and reputation I'm sure he could get a team together that could bring that record back to the U.K. Or is that wishfull thinking?
