Had the engine running tonight for the first time in the boat, sounds awesome for a diesel. Throttle response and sound is more like a petrol engine than diesel. Because of the common rail there is not the usual diesel knocking at idle, in fact the gear chatter from the Bravo drive is louder than the engine I suppose it something I will just have to learn to live with.
Will post a video link soon of the engine running.

Hi there, first i'd like to say what a fantastic job you have done so far on this boat.
I have just bought a cougar myself same model as yours, i'd like to get it completely resprayed over the winter as it is looking a bit ropey in particular the bottom of the hull as it has been kept in the water for the last 4 months, no antifoul and is showing signs of paint peel, with your boat looking supremely painted and i guess you are very happy with the finish, i would like to know who did your paint job, obviously i would like a recomendation of a good sprayer.
Your advice would be much appreciated
Cheers
Mark

The Polytunnel has a galvanized frame and rip stop polythene cover, its 3 x 6 meters and was only £140 inc postage from eBay item no (200680529530). I thought it was excellent value for money, might buy another when the winter comes and join them end to end for winter boat dry storage.
Was going to put it up today but guess what, its raining.

Hi,

Thanks

Ran my engine again tonight and all seems well. The laptop is plugged in just for monitoring, diagnostics and making any changes, but normal runs without.
As you see from my video the engine runs smooth and clean, the pickup is amazing. The engine sounds noisy but in fact most of the noise is from the Bravo drive caused by gear chatter at idle, apparently this is quite normal. In fact I would go as far as saying it sound more like a petrol engine.
Even with the open exhaust it is quite quiet at idle, but has a great roar as it accelerates. Cant wait to hear it full chat on the water.
Have uploaded a video to Youtube see below.

Nearly there
Been doing quite a bit but not posted for a while.
Finished the cabin door at last, its carbon sandwiched with 10mm marine ply.
Took a mold from a washing up bole then made one in fiberglass for the foot well, then used the mold grafted on the back of the door to form a waterproof glove box with a hinged kayak hatch. Wanted somewhere watertight to keep keys, phone, wallet, etc.
Also built a small cupboard just a you go in the cabin, partly to give a bit more strength to the bulkhead as I have removed the dash from that side and also to keep kettle mugs etc.
Glue arrived today and am just about to start carpeting the cabin.

Sounds lovely.

Radio controlled boat mover
Some of you may laugh at this but I built as radio controlled boat mover over the winter. My boat if parked in a very tight gap and I can't use my car to get it into its parking space, also because of the pot holes, ramps and inclines it takes 3-4 people to manhandle it which isn't always available. So I bought a MR Shifta and with 2 1/4 tons was still hard work so sold it.
So thought I would build a radio controlled tracked robot. Initially designed to move my boat into its tight parking space. Can also load its self into a small trailer to be towed to a location, unload itself then attach the trailer to it for moving heavy equipment across rough terrain or steep inclines. Also has a blade for clearing snow and a flat platform for moving heavy objects, indoors or out.
The tracks are from a JCB mini digger as are the sprockets. The length is 48 inches by 29 inches wide so can fit through a standard doorway. All up weight is around 200kg with 4 x 24Ah batteries which last a good couple of hours.
It has four Stanna stair lift motors designed to run at 24 volt but has plenty of power running currently at 12 volts, enough that when it meets a wall it starts to climb it. It has fully proportional speed in forward and revers and can rotate left and right on its own axis

Wanted to build a tracked robot for some 30 years now. Owning a boat gave me the excuse. Boys and their toys hey.
Think I might mount a 3 inch canon on top next and declare war on my troublesome neighbors.

Theres no need to resort to firearms, fit a hydraulic jack on your tracks - drive it under your neighbours car and leave it sideways in the road somewhere, simples.

Intercooler
Are you running salt water through the intercooler Or fresh water from the engine

Hi Sam
The simple answer in no its a sealed system.
To elaborate, its a bit of an unconventional setup and experimental. Water to water heat exchangers can be much smaller than air to water setup dissipating the same amount of heat energy. This is because water is far more dense than air and much better for heat transfer. So to dissipate a set amount of heat a water to air cooler needs to be much larger and have a larger internal surface area than for water to water.
I also wanted to oversize my heat exchanger for two reasons, firstly the cooler the charge the more efficiently the engine runs and also if I wanted to take it to a higher state of tune at a later date it would have extra capacity.
If I had used raw water to air charge cooler it would be quite bulky and heavy as it would have to have a bronze core to resist corrosion of sea water. So what I ended up with is a bit of a hybread system.
Raw water after the pump but before the engine heat exchanger goes trough the small blue heat exchanger top left. On the other side of the heat exchanger is water antifreeze mix which pumped by a small brush less pump to the much larger but lightweight aluminum charge cooler middle of the picture below. So the large aluminum air to water heat exchanger is cooled by a sealed system which is then cooled by raw water. In theory my is system is is much lighter than a standard raw water to air setup.
The aluminum heat exchanger is rated for around 250bhp in an automotive setup, however in an automotive setup it would be supplied by water from a front mounted radiator cooled by ambient air up to may be up to 30 deg C. As the water supply to my heat exchanger will be at sea temperature at around 5-10 deg C. The main engine heat exchanger will run much cooler allowing it to have a larger cooling capacity, so should be good for 350 + bhp.
I suspect if you was running fresh water only not sea water you could use these aluminum charge coolers direct as another chap is doing on this forum.
Regards David
