Design Speed

Boats seem to have a max design speed and engine weight.
Just wondering if anyone knew what it was for a Phantom 20

Wasn't the maximum recommended on a p18 115 hp?

Depends who's reccomending.

for example, I don't think anyone would have reccomended a 115hp motor, for racing one in 2 litre OCR (200hp)

For pleasure use, mebbe by CE standards, i'm sure it would be different.


I spoke with Steve Baker a while ago, and mentioned your setup, and asked what he thought of running a P20 @ 90mph, his thoughts were, that it'd be ok in the right hands, until a situation arrose where you had to take avoiding action suddenly. He wasn't too sure about the outcome of that

Glad he thinks the boat can handle it.
Shame I can't, well i've learnt alot of the last few months, may have hurt me wallet but not me body

what does he think of a big heavy torquey 3ltr hanging on the back?

That could apply to many things, I wouldn't like to take avoiding action at 90mph in my car either.

I seem to recollect that when we first started running XR2`s on the P18 in OCR that Steve was asked about the maximum recommended power for that boat. I am pretty sure he said 150HP as a general rule but with the right set up and with an experienced driver, 200 was OK. I think it was the RYA being a little paranoid at the time that had prompted the question.
