DUBAI — Rashid Al Marri won the rescheduled Abu Dhabi Grand Prix to set the early pace in the class-three offshore powerboat race series for the Gulf Championship here at the Breakwaters. Al Marri on the Al Masaood group sponsored boat led from start to finish to take the checkered flag from compatriot Rashid Al Hamli and Italian Monano Amdid in the opening round of the race that was postponed by 24 hours due to the windy weather conditions.

The winning driver was delighted of the result and thanked his sponsor for providing him the opportunity to race. “It’s a big confidence booster and gives an early lead in the championship series. The 24-hour delay was a good one because the conditions became perfect for racing as the wind calmed down to race without any problem. Now that I have got off to a good start, obviously looking forward to consolidate the lead.”

The second placed Al Hamli too was pleased with the performance. “It was a satisfying result as I had to do a lot catching up to do and overtake the Italian boat to finish second. Hopefully we can improve from this result to keep our hopes alive in the championship series.”

The opening leg of the race was conducted by the Abu Dhabi International Marine Sports Club.

According to Saif Al Suwaidi, vice-chairman of the organising committee, the number of boats which participated in the competition was very big, but still we had a very good and safe start.

“This what we have been looking forward to achieve. It is very important to have a reasonable and convenient course that would provide safety and security to all drivers and boats,” he said.

“The UAE has achieved a great success not only by winning the race, but also in the designing and manufacturing of boats. It is very important to know that the former Victory Team skipper Rashid Al Marri is a great lover of the sea sports and he has designed his boat by himself,” he added.

“Al Marri is not just a driver, he is a technician as well,” he said.

Al Marri thanked the organisers for the great effort they have been making to guarantee the safety of the participants saying that everything was well in place and all the drivers enjoyed the beautiful race

I can't believe Ian hasn't won in his new boat. He needs to fly Gary Ballough over there to run the boat. I've been 119 in I dentical boat. Are thos boats really that fast?

How fast are those boats? I see alot of 28' Skaters running over there and the don't stand a chance here. I wouldn't be surprised to see an American team there next season. I'd really like to find out how to run over there, costs, fees, etc.

89MPH Average speed doesn't seem that fast.

old timer

It was only 25 years ago that Open Class (Class 1) was trying to set that speed as a record!

It would be cool to have an actual race where there was one set of rules and the Merkins could race the rest of the world..

Seems they run their own world championshps, and there is nothing but Merkins taking part.

Why is there not a Merkin team in Dubai? They know it exists, its got oil.

Wow, you guys are touchy....89mph is pretty quick but not unbelievable. We would love to race overthere but I really haven't been able to find alot of information about that series or requirements to race there. Our "World Championship" is also open to anyone that wants to come race as well. Am I wrong in understanding the the 6 litre series is ONLY in the middle east or is it raced elsewhere in EUROPE as well. How much are the entry fees? What is this season series ? I am not knocking there series I ONLY WISH our series had 20+ boats running in 6 liter / superstock. We may have 10 boats by seasons end. How many of the 20 are competitive? Are the motors "STOCK" or can they be altered? What rev limiter do they run? Are the 28 Skaters competitive? Do the have minimum weights, what are the weights? What does it cost to ship a boat across the "POND"?

In 1995 Richard Strutton 'averaged' 104 mph in a class II cat up at the Hull Gold Cup, and that was it's first ever race, as it arrived from the docks that morning (from Fabio in Italy)

At the time it was the highest average achieved in a British event., so quite interesting it was class II and not class 1.

28' - 32'. Check UIM website for rules and advance programs. You can find answers to most of your questions there.

You sure you´re not mixing with the 4 liter boat?

Bytheway If you are involved there do you know the whereabouts of the Notareal/Finnscrew Cougar Cat?
