Engine Choice

Just looking for some advice on engine choice.
I have a chance of a acquiring a Mercury Verado 300. I was going to set my sights on a 300xs, I'm just wondering what you guys out there think I should do..?
Verado looks to be a hell of a motor on paper but for more money, I'm not concerned about spending money on a quality motor but on the other hand wouldn't want to waste money for small gains.
Will be going on my Cougar mainly for pleasure usage with an idea of a couple of club races next year..!

As the cougars seem to have serious stability problems, I'd have thought the last thing you'd want is a heavyweight straight six motor, giving it a very high centre of gravity.

300xs would be my choice, and I seem to recall they go really well with one.
