Unhappy Fuel Tank

After putting 40 litres of fuel in the boat this weekend I realised the tank had a hole in it!

So now looks like I'm spending some of the winter stripping the floor out to replace the tank.

Does anyone know where can I get a 'V' shaped fuel tank to replace it?

I would prefer plastic as this won't corode like the aluminium one in now or is there a reason plastic wasn't used to begin with?

Overtons (catalogue) in the States do them. I've bought a few things from them and the web site is pretty good.

I thought of getting one made in Stainless but thought plastic might have been a cheaper option. I need to get the old one out so I can see what dimensions I need really.

Thanks for the website Mike they seem pretty reasonable, do things generally get through customs fairly quickly?

Without a doubt plastic will be cheaper than stainless! For all you stainless freaks (like me) its gone up 10% this month, thats 40% this year with a further 15% expected before the year end!! just bear that in mind please when you expect to pay the same prices as this time last year

Not normally a problem and delivery is pretty quick. Although I've only ordered small items like gauges etc.

I would love a stainless tank but as it will be hundreds not tens more expensive its going to have to be plastic. However if it wasn't hidden under the floor I wouldn't think twice!!

Would a plastic tank be ok in a phantom or would it have to be metal?

Burty, have you got a stainless tank?
Russ, speak to Cye, see what he can do in ali (massievly cheaper material), he does a nice tank which has protected edges so no fractures.

Personally I dont see the need for stainless tank, I still have the org tank in hotshot from its racing days, at a guess I reckon 2-3mm ali, and its stood the test of time no probs by the looks of it, still no leaks. If its made well ali will be fine.

I know its not a boat but I do all the metalwork on these, ali fuel tanks here and a nice car

I tend to agree with you Dan, all our tanks are made from 3mm ali, if the baffles are installed correctly(which is where most ali tanks fail) they will be fine.

To be honest I just want something thats going to last and as cheap as possible. My first thought was plastic.

Its going to be a pain having to replace the floor, carpet etc. to get to it, so its not something I want to be doing again.

I think it must be the original tank in now so its not done bad. But as Ali doesn't really like salt water so at some point its going to corode through and I don't like the idea of petrol swilling about in the bilge.

Plastic, if I can find one in the right shape would seem perfect and I expect cheaper.

Gav - Is there any reason you use Ali and not plastic tanks?

main reason is the shape our tanks need to be, and to keep the weight down to a minimum. Plastic tanks are more costly to produce.

Yes, the baffles in the original ali tank fell out so i had a new s/s one made with a sump to eliminate all the issues.

Edit : original being the one that came with the boat

I can manufacture Ali, Stainless, Plastic (ABS), Polypropylene, PVC tanks to suit your requirements.

The tank will come fully baffled with an optional sump to stop air getting in the fuel, and to ensure constant fuel delivery.

What litre is the tank that you have?
After looking at the Tek-tank link above I would suggest considering them first as they appear to be good value for money.

Let me know If I can help.

Russ, we are the UK's largest manufacturer of marine fuel and water tanks, down in Poole, making about 1,200 or more tanks a year in ally and stainless. I would recommend a painted ally tank, that will last years. We have ally tanks in Cougar US-1 48's from the early 80's that are fine. Sunseeker have used our tanks since their inception. We offer a two year no quibble warranty. Many raceboats use our tanks. Fax over a sketch of what you need to 01202-665572 with your details and we will quote you promptly, mark it for my attention: SIMON.
P.S, We deliver to Sealine in Kidderminster once a week so could probably drop it off to you in Telford !

Hopefully theres nothing else nasty hidden under the floor!!
