Allison 250 Gas Turbine service

Just hauled it out for some barnacle cleaning! at Cowes Dry Sailing, many thanks to Tristan and Steve for their help, got the boat back in the water, but new prop test failed due to a bit of fuel starvation, the offending pump removed and new one will be here soon, 9.9 hp aux merc getting me out of trouble and giving 6knots flat out, so well happy.........

Happy to help. Would have liked to look over the boat a bit more. Next time. Or if you pass after getting the fuel pump sorted and you need a sea trial helper. Give me a shout.

I considered an RR Allison for my Cougar 27 before I started building it. The reasons we opted out were two fold.

The first is that I didn't know how quickly the governor would react to the boat leaving the water at full power and instantly unloading the prop. I suspected that it would not react quick enough and the power turbine would over speed catastrophically as they were not designed for such applications. Around 15 years ago NTC in Canada built one using an Allison hooked up to a Hamilton jet drive but they only ever appeared to run it on flat lakes.

Squirt 1

The second was that the Allison is renowned for its reliability in its original application, however it is one of the less industrial and more fragile engines and we were concerned about corrosion in constant salt water environment of a boat. Especially on the compressor first stage as the blades and stator's are very thin.

Any thoughts on the above.

That I want to see.. I get just under 65mph from a 17ft fletcher with a 220 outboard, and its not setup for speed.

Please update with your progress, sounds right up my street!

Hi, yes as you say if prop comes out at full chat it would almost certainly overspeed, you need to modulate the throttle, they don't just go bang if you momentarily overspeed, there is a good amount of tolerance. Interesting thought though, as a trained helicopter pilot, one could be cruising along at full chat, then drop the lever on the floor to enter autorotation (airflow reversall through the main rotor) !, this has the effect of instantly removing the load, on some helicopters this is correlated with the power turbine governor, as in the case of the pneumatic governor on the Allison250, but for instance on the Gazelle helicopter, the astazou copes with no overspeed, and no correlation with the pitch lever, but it does use a hydraulic governor.
The corrosion issue is of concern, but again ,proper maintenance wash it with fresh water, the compressor is all stainless steel, so tougher than you think, I have had this Allison in the current boat now on a mooring and it hasn't shown any signs of deterioration. Once installed in the Fletcher it will be kept on a trailer, so i can keep it all dry and polished lol!.
