heat exchanger or not

this may be a stupid question
but why does the average marine diesel need a heat exchanger
the v8 mercs and many others dont need one

Most marine diesels are closed circuit cooled, just like a car, but instead of a radiator they use a heat exchanger and raw water (sea water) to cool the coolant. Most V8s use raw water cooling, the sea water (fresh if on a lake) runs straight around the engine.
Not too sure why the petrols don't use closed circuit cooling. There may be some modern motors that do or a reason why they don't. I'm sure someone on here will know more.

Its an option on both but since the diesels run hotter then the gassers it is better to have closed cooling on the diesels, on a gasser it would be better too, but robs power in both cases and ads weight which on a diesel it realy doesent matter that much.

Thast what i heard and know ...MAYBE WRONG ??!!!

But makes the most sense.

I know that the 8.3 C series suffers from liner cavitation so the coolent filter needs to be changed regularly and inhibiter used. don't know if it's the same for the 5.9 B series
