Importing boat from USA

Hi all,

Can anyone give me an idea of current associated costs to import a boat from the USA. I have info. about RCD but am struggling to find information such as is vat the usual 15% is the other duty charge 1.7%? Also what are the port handling costs likely to be and are there any other hidden charges.

Any info. much appreciated.
Cheers,
Si

Vat is chargeable at current rate of 15% (so buy before the new year) on everything, including duty and insurance. Easiest and cheapest is to use a specialist, I used Peters & May in Southampton.

Boat needs to be on a trailer, so it can come on a Ro Ro ferry, otherwise you get charged for handling, craneage, dockage, wharfage etc.

It really was the easiest boat purchase I've ever made. They handled all the paperwork for me at both ends, and once my cheque for fees and taxes had cleared I just towed it away from Southampton docks.

Many thanks to both of you. Just one other question don't know if either of you bought privately but is there any easy way of getting buyer protection for exchanging monies?

Another vote for Peters and May.

Costs are VAT+1.9% to be charged on cost of boat AND shipping.
