Information about my boat (Cougar 27)

Hi!

I'm looking for more information about my boat, pictures, performance, engines and so on.

I'm not trying to hang anyone! So far I am very happy with it!

Looks like the old Claygate boat, this was the original boat built for Honda for the 2001 boat show

So you do not think it is Cider Daze 2? Number 29?

The cockpit has the original red gel coat. The rest of the boat is repainted.

This boat was originally built for Honda and raced as Honda Racing in 2003, it was used by Jack Glendenning for most of that year when he rolled his SportRacer down the A34 when on route to Wales, Jack then purchased the boat from Honda and raced it as WarmUp, Stop Box and Claygate. Not sure who he sold it to

Its not the 1st Cider Daze as I had that (the orange boat) - the red cider daze was Buildbase (then the Delmar Group boat was loaned as Buildbase after the red one retired)
Looks like Claygate but then it could also be the late Will Knockers Fatboy Racing (deep purple colour).
Looks like it did some of the P1 Superstock rounds with the orange nose.

I bought this as a bare boat off a guy in Portsmouth last year and then sold it it a couple of months later to another guy in Portsmouth as my cat was costing more than I budgeted to get finished.

Looked at lots and this seemed damage free and well put together when you really started digging under the decks etc.

As you say the cockpit is original (pinkish) colour gel, underside is black and looks original. The actual hull has been painted but not sure what the original colour was. We did some investigating but never managed to work out what boat number it was - I thought it was the airwaves boat which Pete has just confirmed.

This one is not the boat that was raced most recently as claygate. The old claygate boat is elsewhere.

Would you know the history of mine and what year it was built. As far back as I can trace it, it seems to have been Honda with the union jack, then Honda was removed and replaced by Buildbase. Then painted red as Buildbase, but cant find any information before that. Or did it start as the red Honda boat above?

Is there anything special I should think about when I'm driving the boat?
It seems like there is a risk that the boat rolls over if one makes an too tight corner at too high speed. (But what difference is that from any other boat?)

I've raced deep v hulls before and catamarans (Thundercat)

Also people are talking about high center of gravity, so should I consider shorten my 300X to 15"?

Yes shorten the leg to 15" ASAP!

These boats had a reputation for rolling with the Honda 225's but the Merc lower centre of gravity with a 15" leg will help a lot.

John is rite, keeping the C of G as low as possible will help. Also if you are not circuit racing and taking corners flat out this will help too.

I can't comment from personal experience as I have not had mine in the water yet, but I have spoken to a lot of people about this subject

Reasons for Honda 225 roll overs:
1. Broken saddles
2. Broken engine mounts
3. Broken steering hydraulics
4. Turning tight and too hard at high speed
5. Collision with another boat
6. Lack of 225 experience
7. Driving like a ****
8. Trim failure & driving it like a 150 (That was me driving like a **** with lack of experience).
9. Trying to stay up with modified boats some 4+ mph faster. Then suffering from a seized gearbox. (That was also me but did pass twice before going over).

You are correct – that was the Honda PR boat for 2004, I can’t recall it being around before then. I drove it at the end of 04 on Windermere, then in the hands of it’s new owner who eventually sold it to you. It was one of the unmolested ones that usually finished in the middle of the pack.

I’ve raced one in the series Honda and driven one in Norway with a 300xs with a lifter and reached 85mph. The engine was later modified and fitted with a 15’’ mid and now does 90mph but still rolled! My advise would be don’t be paranoid with top speed! Keep the engine down low with the prop deep in the water and take full advantage of it’s rough weather capability as that is what is was designed for. Yours should comfortably do 75mph – be happy with that, any faster and you simply increase the risk of killing yourself. Avoid rapid change of direction, fast tight turns and racing and it will be the best sports boat you will ever own.

And was it my one that was rolled on the A34? Not that it matter just would like to get to the bottom of the history behind it for providence.
